View Full Version : Wow... Freaked out to ride at home now

I started riding shortly before I moved here. Granted I rode only at night and with my GFs mother.

Was talking to her today and got the news that one of our friends, a regular at the Thursday night bike nights (200 or so bikes), was in a coma after an accident.

Coincidently... I was looking on an american sportbike forum tonight for a bike for when I visit home in November and noticed a link in someones sig I found
disturbing yet humbling. Hope it's not a repost.

www.ride2die.com

Kind of making me reconsider moving back so soon before I get some more Ks under my belt. Also, I need to find some boots and pants quick.

Just sharing...

It's good to share... LOL

damn some interesting stats on that page... IF they're true............

if the stats about 28% of motorcycle fatalities in US being drunk is true... now that's a lot of drink riding.... howabout 22% for cars, that's still heck a lot of drink driving....

no wonder there is such a high numbers of americans getting killed in motor accidents. It says bikers are 34 times more likely to die per vehicle mile travelled.... now IF that was true... I wander if it's because american's don't have to wear helmets depending on which state they lived, and if their general culture of safety on bikes doesn't matter attitude (I understand that there are safety concious american riders but I always feel when I browse american websites that they aren't as anal about safety as we are here)

Nah it's bullshit propaganda.

<IMG SRC=http://home1.gte.net/res0ak9f/graph.jpg>

Motorcycles have not got any more dangerous, the cars are simply safer. I'm sure if someone invented air bags, traction control, and roll bars for a bike then you'd see the number of bike fatalities going down too.

Could you not draw a comparison of the number of people killed in cars as opposed to aeroplanes, that would show that cars are dangerous and so we should go everywhere by plane.

Lies, damn lies, and statistics

Very interesting site but I agree that local riders are well aware of the safety issues and the need to wear proper protection. Now a days its very rare to even see riders without gloves. I suspect a lot of the picturs on that site are from high speed events which usually end up bad. I didnt download all the images though I did see the final one which hasn't made my day as I am finally going to get my flatmate on the back for a decent haul hopefully this afternoon. Its just a fact of life that if we choose to ride then we have to work hard at avoiding the dangers. Its the unpreditable things that really do make riding interesting though. E.g. Blowouts at 100kph. At least in regard to other traffic, I keep plenty of space between me and everything esle and constantly review my mirrors etc and let the speedsters pass if they want.

disturbing yet humbling.www.ride2die.com

Ride defensively. Wear full armor.

It's a jungle out there
Disorder and confusion everywhere
No one seems to care
Well I do
Hey, who's in charge here?
It's a jungle out there
Poison in the very air we breathe
Do you know what's in the water that you drink?
Well I do, and it's amazing
People think I'm crazy, 'cause I worry all the time
If you paid attention, you'd be worried too
You better pay attention
Or this world we love so much might just kill you
I could be wrong now, but I don't think so
It's a jungle out there

I am pleased they do mention the fact that one of the worse dangers bike riders fact is the number of cagers on cellphones when accidents occur. When will this is outlawed in NZ as well? Do handless phone prove safer or is it the distraftion factor. I suppose you could say having noisy kids in the back seat has long being a cause of accidents through distractions??
As I keep saying. I just keep well away from cars period... and scooters.

As regarding graphic pictures. They have their place to show the reality of what falling off at speed does. I do wonder what happened to the poor cagers hit by those bikes as that is some impact. I think the worse thing I have seen is some HD biker in USA whom went facefirst into a wall without a helment. He lived but his face was not pretty. Not glorifing the pictures but they should be viewed as it sure made me that bit more careful this morning whilst out on the bike.

Very sobering post ~ I think we all need to see that from time to time.

He doesn't quote any of his sources, so I'm wondering about a few of those statistics. But you can't deny the pictures

Those clowns who ride without proper gear are just begging for horribly-gorey road rash. And don't get me started on the helmets!

A brief squiz at the pics tells me some of those could have been avoided - the one where the guy was broken into little pieces indicates he must have hit bloody hard to do that much damage... and it looks like he's in a residential area. Save it for the open roads.

In the end, you're a long time dead - so take it easy.

That's a very good video to play daily to other vehicle drivers, to make them look harder for bikes!

I don't like the inference of the site, IE:Live to ride-Ride to die!

That's just anti bike bullshit, we can do without that! :nono: John.

Just keep the three second rule in mind. If watch cagers at roundabouts, how many cut both lanes when they intend to turn left? The majority of Cagers are ignorant idiots. They look at the person next to them while talking instead of watching the road, or are tuning the radio, or lighting a cigarette. They're always distracted by trival things yet it's the bikers who cop it for their negligence.

Here's a link to a US site that's got some really great safety tips on it:

heh, funny. Almost all of those pics were sprots bikes (not being anti sprot bike here, dont get me the wrong way) ALL of them had nothing but a helmet, if that. How much you wanna bet that them fools be speeding and trying to be valentino rossi... ughh... motorcycling isnt a problem, shit, land a 747 on the motorway for all i care, as long as you dont hit me! People being S*it heads is the real problem...

i dont speed and i pay attention to people around be... sure, ill probably bin, and it'll probably be my fault, but because i wear proper gear, hopefully the injury will be minimal and i can learn from my mistakes...

well, you know what, that website is pretty grusome and eye opening, but is it gonna stop me from riding? HELL NO! however, i think i will be riding a bit safer from now on....

If anything, I feel safer.

Given that there are, in fact more car accidents. Where's the page of melted familys sitting in SUV's?

Its good to be reminded of the consequences. Those of us who have lost loved ones dont need a website to reinforce those messages.

However I agree with John.

I'm gonna go to bed in half an hour and in the morning I'm gonna go for a ride...

Yeah, but how many of the people who die in bed were wearing ahelmet and full protective gear at the time?

Ohmygawd~ how bad was HIS timing??? (I say HIS 'cos only us guys can be so stupid). Car driver probably had no idea what happened.
Wrong place, wrong place, wrong place  ...there is never a good time for that kind of riding with that much traffic around.

I remember in a different life going to an incident where a pedestrian was cut in half as she crossed a a pedestrian crossing.

Two cars dragging hit her as she crossed.

I will never use a pedestrian crossing again

But still going for a blat on the bike today:scooter:

Pretty sobering, i like to look at them because it reminds me of the consequences of stuffing up. However, do a search for car accident pics and some of them are just as bad...
I wont be sad the day I get tired of riding street bikes and move into, say, dirt bikes. However, therein lies the issue, i love riding road bikes, and don;t see that happening any time soon!
We all have to go meet our maker one way or another.

Not that I would encourage people to not wear appropriate riding gear. But, apart from your helmet, riding gear is really only there to save your skin. It will not stop posts going up your arse or protect you from impacting a car at high speed. It's your riding skills, both mental and physical, that will protect you from those..!

I disagree, armour in ya gear will have quite a positive effect on damaging your body, and aparently quite a few bikers will die of blood loss after surviving the initial accident due to not wearing leathers/corduras etc.
