View Full Version : Come on traffic cops... you are losing my respect

JeremyW
21st September 2006, 15:04
Heres a quick tale - As I was driving (yes in my cage unfortunately) down domionion rd today at about 2:45 I had a traffic cop undertake me on the inside at about 60km/h while I was doing about 30km/h in traffic. He/she then cut back into the traffic in a rather rude fashion and later turned into the police station just off dom rd, obviously in no rush.

Now dont get me wrong, I have huge respect for the police and when I am up s%#@ creek the person I most want to see is Mr Plod. They deal with everything we cannot and that is why they have my respect.

BUT after hearing some of the stories on here of unfair cops and incidents such as today I am losing my respect for the traffic division.... Those bus lanes are dangerous enough for cylists / bikers without cops abusing them.

What gives them the right do break traffic rules and endanger fellow cylists / bikers? Auckland roads are dangerous enough without those trusted in protecting us on them blatantly breaking the rules.

I would like to hear from any police bikers on this thread with their response to this.

Try this one on then mate...was riding a ZX14 down from Whangarei on monday and was pinged doing 126kmph on the motorway whilst following 2 cars (at a very safe distance)!
Now I'll take a ticket when deserved no prob's,I know the laws, but for him to purposely single me out wihile following I thought was plenty rude.
He's a well known coppa to certain KBers too....the ginga bastard, you know who too. His arrogance was mind blowing!!
He tried to lecture me...I promptly pointed out how small his feet were

cops are always doing shit like that... I'm surprised thats the first time you've seen it happen... I've seen cops put on thier lights just to get through a red light, and once through they turn off the siren and resume to drive at 50kph, seen that more than 4 times, I've seen cops doing illegal U turns (no lights or sirens... so obviously not urgent)... and one of those times the fucker nearly hit me

anyone is allowed to drive 150 yards in the bus lane with in the city at any time.

ONLY if that vehicle is turning left into a driveway or turning left into a side street. Not for any other reason.

I think the length the other vehicles can travel in that lane is less than the 150 yards. (need to go look in Auckland city council rule books or lsta websites to find the correct rulings)

EXCEPT for emergency vehicles when it IS a emergency and they cant get throu the traffic down the middle of the road, and then they should have their lights flashings and in some cases sirens going.

The "so called" bus lanes around Auckland city is only to be used by buses, pushbikes and motorbikes.

You would have to talk to the cop involved to know why he did it.

I have had maybe four or five incidents where I have had to get back to the station urgently, it happens. Sometimes it might be that you've been contaminated through having contact with a P head, other times it might be a nutty prisoner trying to top themselves etc.

Alternatively it might be that he just needed to take a dump or there was a shout of doughnuts back at the station.

Eitehr way you'll have to ask him to know.

Was it a blue & orange car or a blue & yellow one? The orange are general duties and the yellow are traffic.

Seen both the situations above and each time there WAS urgency.

Don't always have light'n'siren on when heading to urgent jobs myself.
also we've been known to be 'stood down' immediately after doing some overtaking/going through red lights etc, most embarrasing....

Actually - I think you're right. I've ridden down Dom Rd (in the bus lane of course) several times recently and I'm pretty sure that the signs say Bus Lane with morning and evening times. In fact outside those times most of the bus lane is taken up by parked cars there's mostly only room for a bike.

So maybe he wasn't breaking any rule. I remember being surprised that none of the cages used the (out of hours) bus lane.

Still doesn't excuse the cop. When the lane's not being used as a bus lane it should be a bikes only lane. Anyway he was in a cage so he's guilty anyway. And he was prolly Welch.

As I said, big ups to members of the thin blue line for dealing with all the shit I would never be able to deal with (and live a somewhat normal life). I feel safe in my neighbourhood and I grant that in part to police.

I was doing my own thing today and I happened to see something rather amusing. A HP driving along, in a residential area, while talking on a bloody cellphone. Someone stated something about the perks of the job? I'm sorry but that is utter bullshit and a good example of the crap attitude that underpins the whole problem. Rather than taking perks of the job, it is my firm belief that all members of the Police should act as role models , rather than breaking the law and then having other Police just say its perks of the job! Had the same HP have stopped me for any reason what so ever, I would have just laughed at him and they wonder why they are loosing public respect. Someone should teach more people that respect is earnt, not just given. :spanking:

Firstly cheers, as for you question on the red bling :buggerd: , they are breaking the law of common sense. There is plenty of studies regarding how talking on a cellphone while driving adversely affects drivers. I am yet to read anything suggesting that driving while talking on a cellphone is a good idea. I once again reiterate that the Police should be working as role models regarding the law, behaviour and plain common sense. What stopped the HP from pulling over, or using hands free? What difference does it make regarding the type of call, nothing. Lets get one thing straight, the HP had the phone up against his ear talking. The literature suggests that not only will his reaction timing be retarded, but also he now only has one hand to drive. It amazes me that just politely pointing a few facts has some yelling troll. Now imagine this, if I was to smoke and then as a nurse was to try to educate a lung cancer sufferer as to why they should not smoke anymore. Rather hypocrytical(sp). Likewise, when the Police try to tell the public what they can and cannot do, but in the same day, are doing the same stuff themselves. Now its irrelevant the cellphone/radio, as your explaining it. However I am certian that there are plenty of Police who would like to tell anyone caught doing said behaviour(s) why they should not and/or hand out a fine. Again being just as hypocrytical(sp) as the above example of the smoking nurse...

So in summary yet again for those who are a tad very slow, the Police should be setting an example and behaving as role models. But considering the preformance from some here, perhaps thats not really possible? Am I to believe that they would rather make excuses instead??? :Pokey:

The experience I had here with the NSW cops is a lot different. My solid old cage got slammed into by a young girl who had indicated to turn left, and drove straight into me becasuse she was lost and arguing with her friends. I was stopped at a give Way sign, and started to slowly puill out to turn right when she straightened up. Even the witness behind her thought she was going to turn left.

Anyeay, had to wait for the cops. Couldn't move her little cage as the whole left front was destoyed and it sat in the midddle of an intersection. When the cops arrived I explaied what happeneed, and the officer was in agreement with me. He did his best not to give me a ticket, but as I was sitting at a Give Way sign, I got the ticket - $225 worth. He was never rude, completely understanding and very proferssional.

My cage? A 1977 XC Falcon Custom - damage - dent in left front fender. Girl's cage? A 2005 Mazda 626 - damage - destroyed front left, headlights, grille, CVs, gearbox mounts, hood. Totalled $7,000! I still can drive my XC, and the insurance took care of the girl's car.

Glad I wasn't on my bike. I take extra care at that interection now too. Like I said, the cops were really helpful, and said they'd do their best as they understood it was a genuine accident. (Of coursde, the Law says I was in the wrong being at a Give Way sign)

Well, if someone crashes the Police don't investigate the cause of the accident and use this to educate the driver about his or her mistake. Instead, they investigate the cause of the accident to accumulate evidence to prosecute the driver for anything they may of done wrong.

How can a disliking for the Police not be warranted?

Pitty the MoT can't take back the "traffic" responsibility so the Police can claw back some respect.

if you are happy to pay the fees that accompany the investigation like in aviation - huge compliance costs to CAA - for instance, before a type certificate will be issued to an aircraft type, there is about 2000 man hours put into the checking that the aircraft meets standards. would you be happy to contribute?
