It pays to shop around. I am paying $800 a year for classic cover. My neighbour, with a new Triumph paid about $650. He took his insurance out a few months before me with a different company. When I enquired at the same company, the price had gone up. Its a bit of a moveable feast

I used John Baker insurance brokers in Auckland. Fully comp. for my 'bird was $860, compared with a quote of $1300 from my regular insurer (State) and $1500 from NZI.:argh:

John Baker was the first that i tried over two years ago when i arrived in NZ because our company was a client and i thought i'd get a good deal and after three months i found three insuarance companies that had better plans. Protecta was one of them.

Swann Insurance (Aust.) seem OK
I was with Protecta, but they cocked up my premiums, cancelled my insurance and didnt tell me until one day I thought something was odd, checked, and found I hadnt been covered for 6 mths!!!!!

Like that
Transferring to monthly payments - filled out the forms.- paid the 3 months in advance - which they took - .......then...nothing until I got suspicious and checked!

Have to say.. State have been pretty good for me. They were one of the few companies (and the cheapest) that would insure my bike without previous policies (ie. house, contents etc). Paid out wth no dramas when I wrote my GPX250 off and were decidedly helpful.
good to hear about other companies out there though.. i'll be looking around when it comes up for renewal

Statee behaved like a pack of A...holes when I wanted to insure my new R1.

I have the maximum no claims bonus - and no accident in 12 years - but because I collect the odd speeding ticket they introduced me to the idea that next time I get a ticket they will kick me out - I have to say that I have about 6 or 7 vehicles insured with them...and pay beyond $3000 on my premiums a year...

go figure

I am looking for an insurance company who value their customers... if you kno one... let me know - rather today than tomorrow

Their track record speaks for itself.
I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with those pricks!.
Took me ages before I got my money out of them for totalling a car about 16 years ago when I was a young fella. They told me not to bother going back to them!. How's that for service!. I thought that was the reason you insured your vehicles!.
Never been back......
Seen and heard a lot of bad stories!..............

Ride safe dudes!.

What?
25th November 2002, 08:38
Hmmm...

State have been OK with me over a couple of car claims, but I have never had a bike claim.

How many bikes do you want to insure, Wari?

If more than one, give Eric Wood Motorcycles in Christchurch a call. They can put you on to a broker who has a deal going with Royal & Sunalliance where you insure your most valuable bike, specify any others and they will cover whichever one you are riding. This at a premium less than what State want just for the one bike!!

The only downside I can see is that if your garage burns down, they will only pay for the insured loss, so you may wish to find some extra cover for such disasters.

I've had good experiences with AMI. First write they pay back $1000 more than I pay for the bike (no mods). Second write I brought the wreck and they paid $500 more than I did. Have hassles with the house cover though. Premiums are high - but they pay out quick. (2000 ZRX1100 = $1052/yr)

I pay $652.85. With AMI.40% No claims. 1999 SV 650S Almost twice what i pay for my car (1998 Nissan SSS sentra)which cost almost 3 times as much to buy.

Yeah $650 roughly what I paid on my ZX6R. Brought the 1100 and :angry2: bite me - it's over a grand!

If its worthwhile just getting 3rd party insurance and then tuckling away whatever they'd like to charge for full insurance into an account somewhere ... might build up to be a tidy sum indeed !

Have a look at www.kiwibike.co.nz
The guy who runs it is a motercyclist who has done most of the Rustynuts rides over years.
I got no insurance cause I fix what gets broke.
Third party I should have, but if I poleaxe a urban assualt vehicle at speed...
Risk you take

Anyone heard of John Baker Brokers. They are underwritten by Star Insurance. I was at Coleman’s today looking at the new SV1000s :D and they recommended them. They quoted just over $1000 to insure the new 1k SV. Apparently they are popular with Ullysses club members.

They insured my 'bird fully comp for under $900 on account of me having full no claims and being a responsible oldie :D

State, who insure our cars wanted $1300 and NZI wanted a bloody sight more than that. When a mate came over from the UK, John Baker couldn't have been more helpful in fixing up temporary cover. From my experience, they deliver exactly what they promise.

im with Protecta insurance....... it costs me $630 ( with a no cliams bonus )a year to insure my 92' zx-2r......... kinda expensive but kinda neccasary. it made it very hard trying to find insurance because not many companies wanted to know me..... not because i had a bad record ( the opposite in fact ) but because it was a bike. But hey, $630 is totally kool with me in case some asshole decides to rip off my bike :-)

State(NRMA) can go %&$#@ themselves as far as I'm concerned and I'll gladly help. stay well away.
I'm with the kiwibike.co.nz guy. His Name's Dave. I like dealing with him cos he's straight up and knows his stuff. He is in New Plymouth. He gave me 3 plans to choose from I think it's about a $900 premium on a $14k bike.I think my excess is $2k.
I ring him to tell him about my mods and he says it's fine and helps id it if stolen/recovered.

I'm with Dave at Kiwibike too, and I've had nothing but good experiences with him. I was originally with Protecta thru him, but changed to Swann last year due to lack of service from Protecta during a claim last year, and he could get me a better deal thru Swann (who I've dealt with in the past and found reasonably good).

Dave's 0800 number is: 0800 629253

It's really nice when you call up your Insurance Broker and he recognises your voice and remembers what bike you ride & where you live. :)

anyone see fair go last night?
this guy hands his car over on friday night in exchange for forged bank cheques. The people on-sold it sunday and shot through with the $$$. The car now belongs to the new buyer.
State refused to pay the guy out saying it wasn't his car that was stolen, it was actually the money for that car so, stiff bikkies You loser go get another mortgage on Your house to pay it off. STATE: THE OBVIOUS(RIP OFFs).
btw, everyone beware of that scam, don't let the vehicle go till you see the money cleared. and beware of the State scam where they use words to beat You out of Your money on a technicality. They do not like paying for stolen vehicles.

I've been hunting out a better insurance deal, as I am currently with AMI and hoped I could get cheaper some place that specialised in motorcycle cover, and this is what I've found:

value of bike $10,000
(I'd be lucky to get this privately, but thats what Haldanes have for the same bike in worse nick :o )

AMI: (40% no claims)
annually : $654
monthly : ~ $60 ( $654/12 * 1.09)
excess : $500

John Baker: (online quote)
annually : $867
monthly : ?
excess : $1000 (are some options that change premium)

Swann: (called personally)
annually : $612
monthly : $57 ($680/year)
excess: $500 accident, $1000 theft (factory immobiliser will lower this)

Swann: (via dave@kiwibike.co.nz)
annually : $706
monthly : $65 ($780/year)
excess: same as above I guess

Procteca: (via dave@kiwibike.co.nz)
annually : $845
monthly : ?
excess: 15% of value to max. of $1000. theft $2500

Star: (via dave@kiwibike.co.nz)
annually : $995
monthly : ?
excess: $1250 + $200 if at fault. theft $2000

so the long and the short of it (above being the long), is that my current deal with AMI is probably the better, or maybe Swann

I went to State when i bought my bike over here, and he told me not to bother insuring it cos the excess would be $1000. Guess my bike's just too crap to mention! Is it worth me getting insurance though? I know it's not compulsory over here, but do you recommend it?

3rd party is a must, you never know when you may be involved in an accident, and if you're even more unlucky (and don't have witnesses) you may get blamed for something thats not your fault!

otherwise, insurance premiums for 1-years full cover are anywhere from 7-10% of the bikes actual value, not worth it if your on a cheapie I reckon.

not sure what 3rd party costs though...

I was with Protecta and it was $520 changed to AMI $320 and only $250 excess.
the excess with protecta was $1000 if you hit a third party or $1500 if you are alone? thats cause most write offs you will be all alone I guess? or you did it trackday and throw it in the hedge on the way how? na thats fraud!
well I've done the Third party cover because the bikes paid off and I,m prepared to take the loss. $22 a year. not a lot.
AMI usually only cover you if you have a package of insurance house contents other cars ect.
but protecta will at least insure almost anyone at a price.
I think Swan are just the same company pretending to compete with themselfs? Protecta recommended me to swan when I moaned about the premium why would they do that?
remember that if your on HP it compulsory to have full cover and the bike shops make it easy by building the first year into the repayments. its year two thats the killer.

thats a point, does anyone know of an insurance company that will cover track days?
John Baker only does Motorcycle Club members, not sure if that includes club organised track events. http://www.jbinsurance.co.nz/

I insured my last car with AMI under their classic car policy (it was a '72 BMW 2002tii) and this cover was super cheap, $100 excess and included club events!

I did this exercise a few years ago and John Baker Insurance Brokers came out on top for me. Their personal assistance was excellent and their promotion and sponsorship to various motorcycle clubs, including Ulysses, was most helpful and appreciated.

I currently pay $840 per year on $18k with a $500 excess. This also includes a $20k death cover, Mechanical breakdown to $1500 and a completion of journey in NZ to $500

All up this is a very competative package by comparison. also at the time I could not find any Insurance company that would give a third party only on motorcycles.

Cheers

I have just gone though the qoutes circus. Dave@kiwibike.co.nz
provided three options Protecta, Swann and Star $715, $815 and $953 respectively for no 'no claims bonus' on $8500 bike

The Swann excess for theft is $500 vs Protecta $2500
The Swann excess for crash is $500 vs Protecta $130

I am going with Swann

Its a bit like betting on the horses isn't it?
