View Full Version : Buses only on Wellesley

I come off the motorway at Wellesley St on my way to work. A couple of months ago they changed the road layout at the intersection with Mayoral Dr so that only one lane went ahead to the Queen St intersection. At the time I thought this was crazy. Now I know why they did it. This morning a big BUSES ONLY sign was painted on the road. So now I am supposed to turn into Mayoral Drive and then right at the lights and right again into Queen St, then left back onto Wellesley. 2 more sets of traffic lights. Bugger that. I noticed today most drivers ignored the sign.
Anyone know what the fine would be for that?
No idea what your fine would be, but 'illegal' use of a bus lane over here in England carries a £100 penalty.
Fortunately for me in London, I'm lucky enough to get use of a couple of bus lanes that are being used in a 'bikes as well' trial.
A few more of the more enlightened towns and cities over here allow bikes in all their bus lanes - but for some reason the capital lags behind.
One other thing to be careful about - as you guys seem to be getting more cameras about - quite a few of our busses are fitted with forward facing cameras now. So they can photograph you - and you have no defence. We're also starting to see a few fixed cameras in place on bus lanes - whether they are for speed and illegal bus lane use I am not sure... but I don't want to risk a fine finding out!

Whats the worry.Seeing you can use bus lanes in Ak on the bike, I'd use it until informed otherwise.

If traffic enforcement is anything like here in Christchurch no one will take any notice. However if you get binned by a bus don't go blaming the bus driver. I drive them and believe me if you knew how many blindspots most busses have you will stay out of the area.
