My GN250, is just over a year and a half old...but looks like it was pre-1984 model....the chrome is falling off the motor, the exhauts are all scratched and rusty looking, chrome has fallen off the rear tail light ,front headlight chrome is also getting rusty.......

I have only done 10K on it and it is a daily rider into work and stored in a garage every night....any one else have this issue with their 'new' bike...

or have i just not taken care of it like i should?:spanking:

I bought one brand new a year and a bit ago and it had started rusting within 2 months.

Unfortunatly those bikes, including mine, are made to a price. If you were keen to pay 6k for a new GN then the quality would be better but Mr Suzuki wouldnt sell as many.

From what I've heard this is a common probem with modern GN250s. These days they are made in China and the quality standards for the paint and chroming processes are lower than they used to be when they were made in Japan.

Bottom line is you're buying a 250cc bike for around NZ$3300. Compare this with prices for other new 250ccs like the Yamaha Virago (NZ$6995) and you see that you get what you pay for.

Hmm... I live about 50m from the sea, and all the salt air gets into the exposed metal where the chrome has burned off the exhausts, but all the other chrome is primo, 20 years old. It's a 1986 model GN250. Must be the good Japanese chroming.

Yes, but they should last longer than that!

I would check out Trading standards and look to raise it as an issue.

maybe send a letter or email to suzuki NZ (or your local dealer) and see what there view of the issue is . Dont go demanding they fix it but raise the question with them .

Could be one of those things where considing its cosmetic they may not do anything about it until a owner complains (happens in the motor industry)

try your luck anyhow.

first post woo hoo. well anyway yeah same prob chrome coming off everywhere and its only a year old,i just took off the flaking rear light etc sanded it down and spraypainted it black, doesnt look as nice but stops further corrosion ....issue should be bought up with suzuki nz tho i dont care how cheap a bike is they shouldnt deteriorate that fast!!

Must be something to do with chinese quality control, The gn250 I had was a 2004 with 10'000k's on it and the chrome was still all good as appart from a small area under the brake light when it was taken off, some are good, some not so good....best too look for a second hand one, at least that way you know what the quality is like.

Hello and welcome to the mad house. Come on in, the water's soup.

I too have a 2006 Ginny. Some spots of rust already (4 months old) but on the other hand plans to upgrade next year after my full, so not too worried.

I have a 2005 Ginny. Second owner. Had done 1400km when I got it. First time I washed it all the chrome around the taillight came off.........was only using a sponge!

Hey there....I work at Wellington Motorcycles, you may have purchased it from us.

For sure the corrosion resistance isn't as good as the Japanese made bikes (GN's included), but they are built to a price, and if looked after knowing that, they're fine. Wash it often, then cover the bits that'll rust in something like CRC to protect them. (Stay away from the front disc rotor).

Like others have stated here.....you can't buy a decent 250 for anything near the price of a new GN. Hell, they're not much dearer than a 50cc scooter!

Small price to pay.

Yes - and a great bike to learn on and will still have excellent resale / trade-in value even with a few rust spots.

I for one would much rather be riding my GN than a 50cc scooter!!!

Well I know I brought my ginny off you guys. Something I've been doing for staying away from the front disc rotor, is using a cloth and spraying the crc onto that ( away from the bike ) and rubbing it on the chromed parts.

a can of heat resistant black spray paint should do the trick

CRC is your friend spray it on everything, not the breaks for reason stated but shines up the bike and keeps it rust free for longer, and so cheap.

Thanks for the responses. I brought the bike from Tauranga as Wgtn Motorcycles did not have any in stock...for 3 months....sigh but then your all right you get what you pay for, wish i had found a second hand fzr 250........for the same price....might write to Suzuki, i have heard of several cases through the disputes tribunals where they have been made to fix this issue but i think i have left it too long...if you have the same issues after 6 months don't wait ring Suzuki and ask them about it.

but i get my full in 3 months and then i can buy something better.....wish i had sat it 10 years ago after i got my learners...

Cheers
All.

i took an M109 for a ride a couple of weeks ago. bolts were starting to rust on it, and it lives in a showroom, never ridden in the rain, and only had 2000kms on it anyway.

not much hope for the ginny then is there

i bought mine in november last year. so far, the plate under the exhaust pipe is rusting [not the actual pipe!] and the screws under the instruments. also the mirror stems i think have a little at the bottom.

i keep my bike clean when i can...been a while since ive had a good polish though due to the shit weather. got just shy of 10k on the clock, rides in all weather, sometimes sits in the rain at work, but is under cover at night, only been left out 3 nights since ive had it.

i also had an 86 ginny. the upper exhaust [where it meets the motor] was rusted pretty bad. actually took a craft knife to it a few times to get it off. the headlight surround had a few rust spots as did the fenders. not bad for 19 years old, lol. by the time i was done, however....lol. different story.

i also would rather be on my ginny than a scooter capable of a top speed of about 60k. blow that. i cant see going to palmy every few weeks on a nifty somehow.

Hell no, man i see scooters riding on Wellington motorway on the verge and that scares the hell out of me....only a matter of time before one of them gets squashed.......

Well as said only a few more months and then i can flick it and get something bigger/better...has any one had issues with the Hyosungs coming in?

What the....not a very good advert for the M109....trying to go figure, for there top of the line cruiser you should expect more. If the dealership is not doing basic husbandry [old word] on their marketing bike then....

Meanwhile, aside from popping an unintentionall wheelie on my GN, yes wheelie well I am not too sure how high [I let go] the Golf November Two Five Zero has done 8300km since May, all pure recreation riding, therefore longest out from undercover is [say 4 hours] but average no more than 3hrs a ride if that.

Always wipe it down when in from the rain. Grease the chain when it is time for the 3rd tank fill, and generally clean it down every week.

I expect to get some deterioration, ie flacking chrome, but so far so good.

Heads Up and Enjoy [damn shame about that 109 though]

Hey there....I work at Wellington Motorcycles

Thanks for giving us all some info eh.

My 2006 GN is left in the rain ev-er-ee single night. Ha! Rusting it sure is. Thought about a cover but realised I'm too bloody lazy to be putting it on and off.

Actually, just put a screen on it too (off a BMW), so much nicer to ride eh. Will post pictures and directions on making cheeky home made mounts for cheap eventually. If ya wanna know urgently, private message me.

Oh and to make you all smile, I'm 6'5" too, look bloody ridiculus on a GN. But used to own 2 scooters! Ha! Go the GN's!
