Took the 'Bird out for the a spin this afternoon and it all nearly turned to shit.

Heading from Clevedon into Maraetai, I came around a left hand corner 2 bays before Maraetai. All of a sudden the front wheel is all over the show and I'm saying to myself "What the fu... ?????"

Fortunately I wasn't going overly quick and managed to stay upright. I went back to see what I had hit.. I thought it was an oil slick or something but, oh no, its nice new gravel where some council clown has tried to patch up the road, just around the corner so you can't even see it going into the corner.

There are no signs, no nothing so this is your warning... see attached pic.

When I went back, I spoke to a couple of guys who had watched me go around and they thought it was going to be all over as well.
Take it easy around there. And to the council workers... :finger:

BC.

Yup, I found that as well while I was out riding on Sunday. Gave me a bit of a scare, but I wasnt pushing it along too hard so I saw it in time to brace myself for it. It wasnt a huge spot and was just a pile inbetween the wheel marks for cars. A quick skip as I went over it, then the wheels gripped and it was all over.

might pay to give the council a ring as they would be liable if they have unmarked roadworks......ie they will go out and put signs up if people complain

My thoughts exactly - do something constructive about it rather than just bitch on here.

Yep - that's one of the roads frequented by myself - thanks for the headsup.

Surely the council can send a bloke out with a broom to clear up the stuff that didn't stick though?

It's getting rough out there folks :(

Sunday was riding Highway 22 and on the ridge to Niake, hit a small but deep pothole which slammed the front hard. Seemed ok and carried on. Washing the bike tonight, I notice the front wheel rim is bent, squared off for about 7-8 cms and sticking out from the tyre bead about 5 mm :(

Now what? :( :(

Now what? :( :(Hi Paul, now that you mention it, the lip on my rear rim is a tad out of shape i suspect as a result of that horrible *bump* on the Loop that claimed your mate a few weeks back! Thankfully it's only minor but it alarmed me when I first noticed it a few days after that ride. :eek5:

I can't think of the place but someone will post up as far as getting your rim straightened,it should be an easy fix.
The GSX1400 looks to have the same rim as the SRAD/TL1000,i have a spare TL wheel if you want to borrow it while you get your one fixed.

I don't want to sound like a worrier but Speedie and myself parted ways at Clevedon around 5:30 tonight after a Coro loop,he went around to Maraetai .I know he is a ace rider but havn't seen him online.I hope he had no problems with the gravel in question.

Sounds like we should be sending repair bills to the local councils where we ride. Might get something done about the state of our roads.

Thanks for the offer TLDV8. The bike is going into Colemans tomorrow anyway. It's been having a problem with the fuel injection over the last month and when it plays up, it's downright dangerous to ride. No go one second and then full bore the next :(

I'll get them to look at the wheel while it's in there as I have a feeling I won't see it back for a few days anyway. It's too dangerous to ride in peak traffic so they are picking it up.

Man, I hope he's ok too. They aren't too bright around through there (the roadworkers I mean.)
That last sharp bend heading North just as you come around the point into Maraetai, had the sun in my eyes, leaned well over and snapped the bars to the left to avoid......... two eggs, weed slashing the left side of the road with their truck blocking the whole lane on the blind corner???!!!!!! No sign, cones or warnings of any sort. It was close and thankfully no cars coming the other way. :(

I know, half the clear distance of roadway and all that BUT!!!!

You have NZ mistaken for some place else.

You're a cop, bikey cop. Go to the local council and ask if they want regular WOF, Reg and breath test checks or do they want to fix the road

You should still follow up with the Council so they can remove the hazard if it is that bad. Some non KBer might hit it.

i had a similar exp in a cage once...
I was Driving my GF's pulsar..it was down a country road, quite twisty, and it had just started to lightly rain...came around a corner and there was a strip of freshly sealed road about 7m long and 2m wide, smack bang in the middle of a tight banked blind corner.
my girl was in the car with me, i must admit, i was going my usual "dry" speed.
next thing you know the car is sideways and heading for the bank...at about 70kph...on a single lane country road.
it feels like its fuck'n near to that front wheel drive "point of no return"
I wrestle it back to correct it, whilst on the brakes...cause their aint much room left...I just make it, one wheel goes 40cm onto the grassy bank, the car is still in a slide, it fishtails down the road till i feel safe to apply power to pull it straight.
man, thats alot of of words to describe 5 sec.
what i find helps with control of such situations is to think what you would do if this happened..do this when your riding, then it comes natural.

This happened on SH1 at Mercer about a year ago. Two cars hit a huge pot hole and both had blow outs. They got the Transit guys to pay for the damage. It had been reported but they chose to do nothing. funny thing was it must have claimed about 10 cars as the area was littered with hub caps that had come off due to the buckling of the car rims.

My advise is to call the council and also report it to the Police on *555. It can be a pain to try and report it , but half the time the councils and transit guys have no idea what the dumb monkeys have been up to on the roadway and most do not know how to correctly sign post road hazards.

BK you finaly got out for a ride.

There was a "pot hole " on the ridge down there that was a good few meters across and dropped at least a foot but they fixed that now
