280? 2 up? where did this happen? I've got exactly the same bike down to the cans and paint, and it's not capable of 280, the factory only rate them to 250

James Deuce
20th October 2006, 07:40
There is no way in hell that a VTR could do 280 2 up. Impossible.

Do you understand just how much horsepower you need for that? 100HP will get you to 240 km/hr. After that the amount of power required to punch a very aerodynamically inefficient shape, made less aerodynamically efficient by having two lumps of un-aerodynamic human on it, increases logarithmically.

Get the details of the guy's bike, plug them into the calculator in the link I've attached and continue to argue that a VTR can do 280. You won't be able to.

You will need measured rear wheel horsepower for the VTR in question, from a dyno to accurately complete the equation.

Most speedos are approx 10% inaccurate and almost all over read by that amount. If your friend has re-geared (people usually lower gearing for better acceleration and easier wheelis) his VTR then he could have made it over read even worse.

Assuming it is standard, you can subtract at least 28 km/hr from the maximum reading. If he has made a 10% reduction in gearing as well then you could be looking at a min 56 km/hr speedo inaccuracy at an indicated 280 km.hr. Which is what I think we are looking at.

Tell your mate to do the science, not the anecdotal blather.

My RC30, with $2500 dollars worth of race kit parts (cams & valves) made 108BHP at the rear wheel and recorded a radar measured and time vs distance confirmed 265km/hr with me folded up like a pretzel and me only weighing 85 kgs back back in 1991.

He's talking bollocks.

James Deuce

I've done a rough calculation based on assumptions and figures I've gleaned from various VTR sites and this is what it looks like:

Input Parameters Are the Following:

Coefficient of drag = 0.4

Frontal Area = 10.00 sq feet

Test Temperature = 70.00 degrees F

Test Barometer = 30.00 inches Hg

Vehiche MPH = 170
Computation Results:

Air Density Computed is 0.00233

Aerodynamic "Drag Factor" is 0.01078

Rolling "Drag Factor" is 66.11639

Computed Aerodynamic Horsepower Required is 141

Computed Rolling Horsepower Required is 15

Computed Frontal Lift Force is 55 Lbs.

Dyno his bike - if it has 141 rear wheel horse power then it is a pretty worked VTR1000. I'm being pretty kind and assuming neither of you is a fat bastard.

thehollowmen

Coefficient of drag = 0.4

Shit that's one slippery bike
I'll just find the post on drag, because that's near sports car limits.

EDIT : http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=638588&postcount=38

Whack those calculations in again with a drag of at least 0.7

James Deuce
20th October 2006, 09:16
I know - I was being kind.

I did 0.7 and it was 230 REAR WHEEL HP needed to hit 280kph.

Dont be too quick to write this one off. My needle stopped at the 280 mark on the speedo. Not a true reading of actual ground speed i admit. This bike definatly delivers and im going to spend an easy 2K to make sure that everything i can wring out of this machine. I just got a new RK XW- Ring chain to handle the tourqe. Im going to use racing fuel, heavy duty plugs and leads to boot.

Any suggestions from anyone, even those whom have little faith, to what i can do to make this thing shatter barriers to near on flying, would be thanked. I dont have a partner to nag me about not doing this, so im going to have fun oushing this bike to its limits. I even considered putting it on the track for some amusement. I love this shit.

kickingzebra
20th October 2006, 11:23
Race fuel needs jetting and dyno retune, and is hard to get.... And VTRs don't have a reputation as the best handling beasts out there... Fun to ride all the same!

My reccommendation is suspension before power.

Damon
20th October 2006, 11:59
My reccommendation is suspension before power.

I agree, someone has had a fiddle with mine and it handles well, for a VTR, but if you want to go breaking records then I'd be looking for a new suspension setup all together, PM Shaun, he's our resident Ohlins guy, also a set of manual cam chain tensioners would be a good start because they tend to play up when you don't want them to, like I found out at the last Drag day, check out http://www.cbrzone.com (http://www.cbrzone.com/), they have some good performance parts at good prices and they deliver fast too.

Astrocat
20th October 2006, 12:07
Will do as much i can on the suspention till i run out of options. Cheers. Some swear by the SV before the VTR, however i have had a lot of fun the VTR bikes. Im a Vtwin man for sure. I love them.

If those whom have knocked the 280kph, go back and read again. I said that the speedo ran out of rom. I acknowledged that the grounfspeed is quit something else. I wasnt the one touting that the spped was actual to the speedo; some-else did that further back. The reality is quite different, as nice as it would be to take it there. I certinalty did not just start riding today.

I dont muck around at the bottom of dial. I love getting as close to light speed as much as possible, like most others do.
