Got learners wednesday last week, got fecking fablous Suzuki GSX-R 250 with glorious acceleration on Saturday, drove home Saturday afternoon... got dog boxed by the missus slightly later on...

Idiot mistake number one: Getting pissed off and flustered at the roundabout (on way home), clutch in, mashing gear leaver with boot to get to first gear with throttle somewhat open, then dumping clutch, and wheelstanding it accross the intersection. Fun, but on the first ride after I'd bought it? Gah!

Serious idiot mistake number two: Tonight, "just felt like ridin'.." sweet, go for blat from glenview in hamilton to terapa and back, and just before I go to turn into my street, I go, fuckit, why not go out into the country a little, and try some heavy braking? (it was ~9:30pm). Turn into street, and a little voice in my head says: "Wrong Decision". I ignore said little voice, and continue on, down random street, notice that its kinda dark, and I've not ridden or driven this street before, do braking, and then look for a section to turn around and go home.

Spotted section on side of road, slow down, turn in to it, slow to a bit under walking pace and then start to turn. Gravel. Lovely. Bike starts to slide out from under me. I start to step off, bike stalls. I grab ass end of bike and handle bar and pull together. Like a fucking tree falling in the forest, bike keeps on fucking falling. I stick hand under engine somewhere, feel for structural bit (how the fuck I didnt grab the muffler, I don't know) and haul. Bike slowly comes upright. Glasses then fog. Scratches are there but only a little bit, in about 10cm circle, on previously pretty fairing, and on previously pristine muffler, fuckit.

Apparent moral of story: Avoid gravel. Don't ride at night when slightly tired, especially in places that you don't know.

Other than that, its quite nice to ride, apart from the 12 or so km/litre of gas that I seem to be getting :) Cheaper on fuel than a cage they said...
More interesting in the corners? Hell Yeah!
70kph in first gear? Wouldn't know anything about that, nooo.... :)

Yeah mate. Hit the nail on the head. Just ride safe and don't push yourself too hard, too fast. Sometimes, you should listen to that voice. Just take it easy. Glad to hear that everything is relatively okay though.

Welcome to KB though, and have a good stay. In the words of The Eagles, "You can check out, but you can never leave."

Pissed me off, really, It had been a nice little blat.

Funny thing, riding a bike is far more physically demanding than I'd ever expected

(edit... and an almost virgin bike, with no scratches on _that_ side. Argh!)

And - Emotionally demanding

Ahh, it sounds like you're having a grand time! Thanks for sharing your experiences and getting into biking - Well, I binned it at nana speeds on my 2nd day of riding so take it easy on the fun stuff!

Seriously though, ride safely, ride safely and ... edir ylefas! Read as much as you can, practice in safe conditions ... and... oh yeah, ride safely!

Cheers guys.. I tend to ride like a nana when commuting, but every once in a while I have to hear her sweet, sweet song :)

Compared to the cages that I drive (suddenly boring, wonder why?) I know that I don't know a bunch of stuff that needs to be second nature in a sticky situation, so that tends to influence my riding.

Grand time? Absolutely! Its scary, but oh so fun. Almost wet myself with glee on the first testride I had because of this machine I was sitting on that roared and kicked me towards the horizon :)
I figure I'll head out to the industrial estate this saturday, weather permiting and do some practice on some swerves and quick stops.

Viddy you poor thing! I donīt know how I would have reacted because I am a totally learner (as well). But I really had to laugh when I read your text!

Take care

Beware that siren song. Any idiot can open the throttle, it's whether you possess the skills to deal with whatever happens next that counts.

Welcome to the site Viddy. Thanks for disclosing your "moment" with us. It's funny how quickly your repertoire of humorous anecdotes grows when you're a rider!!

We were discussing that poor GSXR250 mileage just the other day......

Welcome aboard Viddy.

Don't worry, a little off at low speed such as this never hurt anybody, just their pride. Happens to almost everybody. Although I'm sure there's a few blowhards who'll be quick to say it hasn't happened to them.

If bikes didn't fall over they'd be cars, right?

Nice to hear from someone starting out, I think you learnt a very valuble lesson, that you don't know enough yet, I have been riding on and off for 3 decades now and still don't know enough. If you take it to heart you may ride for many years

A nice bike but sounds like it could be a handful for a learner, saying that I started riding when I was 10 or 12 on the farm, I am not sure what the bike was, it had a 150cc premix 2 stroke Villiers engine and girder forks, it had 3 speeds, fast, faster and fastest. I hit the fence with it a few times till I realised it could actually go round corners and that brakes were there to slow it done as oppossed to hitting a fence post to stop.
