This may be a repost and if it is im sorry
"Police have drawn Tasers twice more in the last 10 days, bringing the total number of times they have been used to 13.
About 180 police in greater Auckland and Wellington were trained to use Tasers before they were officially added to the police arsenal on September 1, despite protests from some politicians and anti-Taser groups.
Police have fired the Taser once, used laser painting – highlighting the target with a red dot – nine times and drawn the stun guns three times.
In most of the incidents in question there were weapons or suspected weapons involved, police said.
In the latest incidents, a Taser was drawn in New Lynn to catch an offender who had threatened a woman with a knife on September 20.
Last Wednesday police drew a Taser and laser painted a man armed with a knife who had threatened to kill himself in Counties Manakau.
The incident where a Taser was discharged involved the arrest of an 18-year-old man in Western Springs on September 8.
Police said the man suffered minor lacerations from the probe contact and no injuries when he fell.
He was later charged with assault with a weapon, threatening to kill, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a knife.
Police have defended the use of Tasers, describing them as an important crime-fighting tool amidst growing violence, but critics have called for them to be banned."
Personnaly i'm pro these tasers as policemen and women can safely deal with certain situations without having to wait for armed offenders and can avoid fatal and non fatal incindents without drawing real guns like the incident where the guy died someplace and the man who took like 4 shots from two officers who survived.
What are your guys thoughts?

I feel sorry for the bastards, it's catch 22.
Well considering half the shit the cops have to deal with, it's hardly fair that don't get much to take it on with.
But then you have the PC bragade come along, who somehow have this idea that cops are now gonna Tazor every person they talk to. So they don't want them to tazors or weapons, but still at the same time stop crimminals.
It's like taking a builder's tools from him and telling him to make a house
"Oh you injuried this man when you apprehended him!"
"Shit, you didn't stop this guy and now he's killed someone!"

Nah, stuff tazers - they're for rent-a-cops and practical jokers. If the police can't deal with an offender using an ASP, then they should just shoot 'em with their Glock. I don't see a need for an intermediate device like a tazer. Pffft.

Why do the police in New Zealand use small tuned percussion instruments to shoot people? Why don't they use a gun? - would save wear and tear on Glockenspiels.....that's probably the root of all the problems. Kiddies in kindie have no musical instruments coz the police are out using them to aprehend criminals...kiddies get unhappy and grow up to design P labs...the whole vicious cycle is exposed.

I wonder how long before people start carrying them? It is after all, NOT a deadly weapon, and since the effects have been declared to be non-hazardous and not worth worrying about, any assault charge could be argued to be of the most technical nature. Akin to striking someone with a feather.
So, what would happen if I, Jo Householder, found a burglar in my house. And pulled a Taser from under my bed and tasered said burglar ?

they are totally legal in the States ( not the projectile models.. the prong models).. i can go into my local K mart and pick up a 50,000 volt stun gun for about US$50.. i used to carry one when i worked in a nightclub ( right next to the 9mm ) and only had to use it once.. you light the fire on one of those and the dick head sees the blue arc.. it changes their minds about their attitude in a hurry

Thats the same figure Keith Locke was bleating about, which is funny given that amnesty international who did the research which hes quoting actually stated that in only 15 or so of those cases did the taser possibly play any role in the death at all. Funny how they don't mention how many have died in the UK or that in N.Z the taser is far weaker.

Getting tasered has got to be a tad better than being shot.
I heard a rumour, the first time one was presented here the person in question's attitude changed for the better in a blink.
Imo,one thing that sucks is... NZ is is perhaps 5 to 10 years behind other Countries like the US when it comes to crime. That being what is happening here happened somewhere else years before.
The powers to be here had the advantage of learning from those who have already been there yet did nothing. We are lucky there are handgun laws here,at this point the weapon of choice in South Auckland seems to be the Hammer.
Any one getting zapped will have put themselves in a position of asking for it so there is still Freedom of Choice.
Who was that wanker on TV the other night saying crime hadn't risen,it was glitch when they changed over from the Wanganui computer or something like that.......That there are plenty of Police (not to be confused with MOT in disguise or Rookies)....... I wonder how many Detectives have left or transferred in the Manukau district this year,15 ?)
Whats the bet, presenting a taser used or not means paperwork. ?

Thanks! I've seen a few versions - that first one looks pretty grunty. I don't see the problem with law abiding people having them to protect themselves and family. Its got to be less harmfull than any other form of self defence bar running away - which you can't always do. Better to be in court on assault charges than dead or have kids screwed up over a more traumatic event. The only people its likely to kill are those with a weak heart or a pacemaker - not the sort of people that are going to start trouble.

Restricted weapon has to be scheduled as such. Is it? Especially ahome built one. Cos, whats the difference technically between a "taser" and , say, a Van der Graff generator?
Or a CDI ignition system? That produces a hell of a voltage, too. Ask someone who's been silly enough to put a spark plug in his mouth.

After all, by the same official logic, it must be better for a a burglar to be tasered by me, than for him to be introduced to a couple of foot of good German steel under the present dispensation.
EDIt Would be perfectly simple to have a rule that householders can have one in the house, but not allowed to have them in public. Works for every body, householder can protect himself/herself doesn't get mugged /raped; cops get an easy pick up on Burglar Bill, still twitching, and Burglar Bill gets a harmless tingle instead of an unpleasant introduction to Solingen's finest/
