yep, the time has come. 11.30am today I'm going to be sitting my full - feel like I haven't prepared tho, I really wanted to spend some time on the site reading other's past experiences....
not to worry - I guess just remember to keep left & keep under the speed limits and I should be ok
will post up my results tonight

best of luck guys!
metric, like boomer said, about all you have to do is remember the potential hazards and repeat them bck to the tester.... easy. eg: at an intersection going straight
* car coming from left
* bus coming from right
* bus possibly obsuring the view of other vehicles
* dog walking along the footpath without a leach
* manhole cover
* car behind (tester, they are a hazard too lol)
* building site
*etc etc
basicly anything you can see that could turn into something that might be a danger to you, or cause you to ajust your journey
you'll be fine :sunny:

Hang on - I haven't reached this stage in my development - who said anything about talking during a driving test?
Surely you just ride where they tell you to go and if you obey the rules of the road you pass?
Will I need to bring a pencil and paper to write down the friggin hazards?
Shit - if it's too complicated I'll sell the bike and go back to the cage.
Can anyone confirm if they test yer eyesight EVERY time you sit a test?

Can anyone confirm if they test yer eyesight EVERY time you sit a test?
McJim, I can confirm that. In the last 13 months I had an eye exam after failing the eye test to get my L plates. I then had to sit another eye exam for my Restricted, and then another for my Full.
To rub the salt in, my car license runs out in November, and I have to get another eye certificate - another exam. Total cost $110 on eye exams!!
My eyes are 20/20, but I can only see two of the three lines of text in the AA test machine.

Drum- Hold on mate.... no you dont have to have a FULL eye test...
Go and ask for a STANDARD test cost about $15 or your GP can confirm your eyes are ok if you cant see the 3 coliummns in the eye test machine...
Seriously it is only $15 for a standard eye test at any optomitrist
(or who ever you spell the eye dr) and they know all about people failing that particular test when going for your license... so they in a STANDARD eye test.
And while you are there ask them how long the paperwork for the standard test last for..
as the paperwork can be used again within a certain length of time sapan....
I know this cos I have a young friend go throu all this procedure when he got his bike and also car license as he also could only see 2 of the 3 colummns..

The certificates must have been issued in the last 6 months - and they take the bastard from you when you sit the test. I just thought since I'd had it done in May I wouldn't need to go through it in November again (on account of my eyesight not having changed for the past 36 years and therefore being stable).
In UK it's dead simple ...they point at a car in the distance and say "Wot's the number plate then?" If you can't read it they fail you there and then and you don't even get to see the road.
Well Metric - do you have a full licence?
Drum
3rd October 2006, 16:16
Sorry, wasnt quite clear there.
First time was a full eye exam - $50 bucks. The next three tests are a reduced test at $20. That's including the certificates for my 6L, 6R, 6F and the renewal of my 1F.
I think the certificate has to be less than 30 days old - I'll have to check that.
edit: Heres the link to the eyesight stuff...http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/licensing/getting-licence/vision.html
Certificate must be less than 60 days old.

GP at $55 a visit? That would have been $165. I'd stick with the full eye test.

Maybe metric can fill you in on what his test consisted of.
For me it took about 40 minutes and involved riding around lower hutt in 50km/h and 70 km/h speed zones through intersections of every kind - give way, stop, uncontrolled, roundabouts and signals and turning from a median. Also had to do u-turns in both the 50k and 70k zones.
Had to wear the earpiece and identify hazards etc. Tester was a rider, but he was in his car because of forecast bad weather (which had cleared by the time of my test).
Didnt go into the 100km/h zone - I asked at the end of the test but he said they dont do that!
It was much easier than I thought it would be, and any rider whos been riding for a year or so would easily pass the test.

Congrats to both of you.
I too have the joys of having to sit my full shortly. And the visit to the op's for the eye test (for the 4th time in just over a year.) Strange that there was a front page headline in the Dom only last week stating that over 70% of drivers fail the eye test and have to get a cert. Everytime I go for the eye test, they always want to do a full test. I walked out of 4 opticians because they weren't prepared to do the basic test for driving. They must love the government for bringing in the eye testing machine. And I'm sure there must be a lot of folks out there that pay for the full test because they don't know about the 'driving' eye test.

yep, can do... I did my test out at Westgate AA. to set the scene, picture torrential rain. I also had an ear piece. He was in his jeep. We rode out of Westgate into the residential area for about 10 min, I did 40-45kph. Had to pull over twice, each time identifying where vehicles were coming from i.e. arrows pointing from which direction the cars were coming at me - identifying hazards
also had to do a u-turn - doing this in very heavy rain in a small residential street was a bit tricky but no worries...
drove around a bit more towards the open rd. got out on to SH 16, he told me twice to go faster (as again I was doing about 70-75kph) but it was still bucketing down...
we turned around & he said "make your way back to the station" - at that stage I thought I'd fucked it, either for failing to indicate coming out of roundabouts, going to fast through road works or not going fast enough during the test...
sure enough, back at the AA he noted that I was going quite slowly, and that I didn't indicate coming out of roundabouts but all's well that ends well - I passed
hope that helps those that are going to sit it...
good luck too you guys

I did it through the AA (opposite Queensgate). I recommend booking your test now, as there was a 2 week waiting list when I booked (although it was the school holidays so the place was full of whippersnappers).
You can also book online, in the comfort of your own home......

...over 70% of drivers fail the eye test and have to get a cert.
It costs nothing to fail the test at the AA (or wherever).
So here's what I tried after getting my eyes tested by an optometrist for my "Restricted" (and getting two certs off the guy) and then being just a bit over 6 months later when getting the "Full"...
Close right eye.
Read your line from the left and right columns (your left eye will see 2).
Close left eye, open right.
Read your line from the right column (your right eye will see 2).
I think the machine works by your left eye seeing columns 1 & 2 and your right seeing 2 & 3. I'm one of those people who can't seem to get column 2 lined up in both eyes.
Once I fixed it by jamming my glasses harder against my nose. (When I got my "Learners".) But by the time I went for "Restricted" I couldn't do it anymore.
The optometrist said my eyes were fine (as long as my glasses are on) and that the machines were junk.
Cheers,
Drum
