If she really went sliding 552 feet down the highway, the bike must have been going pretty damn fast.

I liked her new gear, in the last picture!

Would go well with my helmet.

Oh dear...
I'd say this article must be a mandatory reading material for every pretty girl in Auckland (and elsewhere) riding her scoot without protective gear (but then again, reasonable gear costs more than a typical scoot).

She doesn't mention Shaun again - perhaps he's done the world a favour and removed himself from this world.....he sure made this girls life hell.

Very courageous girl. Anyone got a link to the original vid? I thought it might have been the 'wheelie falling off girl' but I don't think it's her.

I don't think scooters go fast enough make you slide 522 feet...

No, but they do go fast enough to shred skin and meat from your bones...

Need to know the speed he was going to agree with you there...cause if he was speeding (and by the sounds of it he was) then it is his fault if you ask me, big time his fault.

5th October 2006, 17:06
That's some serious learning alright. Any one out there been down the road in a pair of draggin jeans? They have been part of my commitment to always wearing safety gear, but I'm wondering if I'm kidding myself about how much protection they provide.

Take care out there peeps

I think I've seen that clip with a girl slipping off the back. Sobbering hearing the rest of the story. Like someone said she is beautiful and someone else has taken that away from her. The blame falls squarely on the rider. Just like a car driver by taking on board passengers, admitting it or nor, you become responsible for their life. The dickhead rider knew she was there, knew how poorly she was dressed. And sure knew he was riding fast. Some mate he was.

Ixion
5th October 2006, 20:17
I did not know it was possible to actually be blown off the back of a bike. Has anyone ever experienced (or heard of ) a similar case?

I almost never take pillions (maybe half a dozen times in 40 years). For such reasons.

Courageous lass.

If it's the clip I'm thinking of ((this one) (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4605743187019394414&q=girl+falls+off+back+of+bike), he did a mono with her on the back, dressed like that. I reckon she was a bit stupid for getting on dressed like that, but he was an arse for doing the mono, and no question he caused it (if that's the right vid...)

FWIW the helmet on the chic in the vid looks about the right colour...

An old girlfriend blew me off on the back seat of a car once or twice!

Seroiusly though this is how I got into biking when a mate took me out on his ZZR1100 or some other big kwaka 10 years ago. Any roads we were blatting around the M42 when he nails it, fair enough but Dave is only 5' 5" and I'm over 6 foot and perched high up on the raised pillion seat. Dave lays on the tank and I get the whole wind force on me nearly ripping me off the back. I managed to push myself forward and hold onto the first thing that comes to hand - the underneath of the tank. Just before I close my eyes I glance at the speedo and we're pushing 140mph and accelerating. Fu*k how I stayed on I don't know, but as I wasn't wearing any gloves I did manage to take the paint off the tank with my fingernails!!
Swore I'd never go on the back of a bike again - rather be in control.

5th October 2006, 22:36
Good to see she came through............but..the webpage says she was not hanging on until she got blown off
The bike is going faster, you are on the back and starting to move rearward on the seat, the gap to the rider is getting bigger,a self preservation light comes on inside your head..Danger is eminent, you ignore it and fall off the back in the 100 and something an hour windblast.

Lissa
5th October 2006, 22:59
Poor girl... scared the crap out of me, to think I used to pillion wearing nothing much more than she was, (although that was along time ago when I was young and stupid, well young anyway). Good to see her riding again too.

sexy beast
5th October 2006, 23:37
amazin story....she's very brave to get on a bike again...pretty chick too. That Shaun guy must have been really stupid to let a pillion ride without proper gear, guess he wasnt wearing any either. wonder what happened to him...idiot!!

The way it happened didn't make much sense to me but the end result did. What a horrible way to learn a lesson, especially for a girl.

Question: Now that you can buy Kangaroo skin suits, are they better protection than leather? The GP boys use them. I know they are lighter.

I learnt my lesson a while back stuffing around on a dirt bike while wearing a tshirt.

One thing for certain. I looked at the girl's photos and started allocating a budget for gear upgrade. Not sure if my summer dririder jacket with foam padding would have done much of a difference...

Good point. Also, we know they don't offer much protection against bull bars.

Beemer
6th October 2006, 10:25
I had tears in my eyes reading that - and the worst thing is, as a rider, she should have known better - and she obviously realises that. No way would I go out without the proper gear on, no matter how many idiots on this site and others say it should be a matter of choice.

Like the stupid prick who wrote to the paper the other day complaining he'd been given a ticket for not wearing a seat belt - said he was only driving the short distance between the shops and the bowling club and was only doing 20kph so why didn't they concentrate on 'real crime'.

Bloody Mad Woman (BMW)
6th October 2006, 10:28
I would hate to even imagine the pain. Seeing the pictures sure as hell rams it home. I would often have friends say to me - god don't you get sick of putting all that gear on - my answer was and always will be - I want to be protected as much as I can if I'm gonna hit the deck! If it was too hot to get the gears on then I didn;t ride - a couple of times that happened when I was living in the Hawkes Bay.

I was watching the teev last night and a re-run of motorway patrol was on. worst thing was some poor bastard got knocked off a K100 (I think) and ended up getting run over by a van and dragged along.

The sounds the poor fucker made when they got the van off him and into the ambo werent good. he did have decent gear on, but got two busted to shit legs out of it. no roadrash I could see: the gear does work.

They are lighter as they can use thinner roo skin for the same if not better level of protection, look how far Ngakano slid in his.......

One brand of german gloves uses stingray skin so you could get a "Irwin special " suit!

anti-gear Nazis? WTF? Since when did people who chose not to wear all the safety gear go around preaching to those that did wear all the right gear? It's the other way around, gear Nazis go around telling others how to live their lives.

I have always worn full gear. Regarding ACC in New Zealand - the dumb arses pay for some things and not others but in my opinion (and I have been riding 25 years) if you fall off a motorcycle and are not wearing protective, gloves, footwear and at least full trou and a sturdy jacket (helmets a given) - ie there is not any exposed skin, then you should not get paid a bloody cent of my taxes in ACC.

Ditto some drunken arse or fool without a seat-belt in a car.

As for open face helmets - the 'open face' part applies to your chin on impact.

I guess she learned her lesson and hopefully sued the shit of Shaun.

All the gear all the time people!

Well, helmet and gloves all the time. And boots. Odd, really, how it becomes clear that jackets and pants are, if one is forced to choose, the least crucial bits of gear.

Not that they're not important, just that they're not what I'd keep if I could only wear part of my protective ensemble.

As you get older and a bit more aware of your own mortality, your attitude changes too. I actually feel really unsafe without my proper riding jacket and leather pants. I might wear jeans for a trip into town, but still always wear my armoured jacket and gloves. For out of town stuff, it's always full leathers.

Yup, boots are crucial but we can bypass the pants and (as a result) lose the legs that keep our feet attached  Now that's clever thinking! I'm bad for it too though :(

http://www.speedfreakinc.com/content...rashqueen.html

I couldn't get the above link to go anywhere (err 401) - but I this should be the current link... http://www.speedfreakinc.com/safety/extreme_roadrash_cause_effect_and_lesson_learned.h tml

...and then there's this little collection... http://www.speedfreakinc.com/roadrash_royalty/2.html

As one who has done an occasional slide up/down the road... Jeans are better than track pants... and actually provide some reasonable abrasion resistance - not just from my own experience - an Aunt of mine was an ambo driver down Kawerau way for years, and she could relate a number of crashes where people had slid along the road, got friction burns through their jeans - but no big holes...

Then again - two pairs of jeans are better than one - draggin jeans are better than two pairs, and leathers/body armour/kevlar/... is even better still.

I saw the extreme roadrash article somewhere else (bigger pics) - and showed my wife (didn't need any convincing - already has good gear), and my 7 yo lad - which opened his eyes!

IMO - the chick came off because her helmet visor wasn't clipped down, and when the wind caught her, it flipped the visor up, and peeled her off the back...
Part of the reason why I like pack racks. The tall ones. :mobile: I also like my pillions to wrap their arms around me. Feels good.:whistle: Err - and it also means I can tell exactly what the pillion is doing. And if it's a spirited ride, I get them to have one arm around me, and the other arm/hand pushing on the back of the tank, so they can take some of their own weight when under brakes. Dunno how well that would work with some of the extreme stepped seats tho...

Exactly why I bought it up again, certainly changed my view on what gear to wear.

As you get older and a bit more aware of your own mortality, your attitude changes too. I actually feel really unsafe without my proper riding jacket and leather pants. I might wear jeans for a trip into town, but still always wear my armoured jacket and gloves. For out of town stuff, it's always full leathers.couldn't agree more.

She obviously has a real strong will, went through hell, and came back with a big chunk of the nasty between her teeth, tough girl.

I wonder at the lack of mention about the rider, since I'd point my finger squarly at him for riding like a cock with an unprotected passenger.

The speed required to create that much drag on even a small person is fuckin amazing.

Wow that is quite a read!
I have always been a bit scared that something like that will happen to me. So I always make sure that the rider knows exactly where I am on the bike and I will only ride with someone I am completely comfortable with.
Yeah, I am a wimp, but I would hate to end up like this girl did. She has a hell of a lot of will power!
Loosing your breast... good god!

That wasn't road rash that was third degree burns. Road rash heals. She has no nipples (think about it) and a torso that is just one big patchwork quilt of grafts.

I guess I didn't think too much before posting - Even I can see my humour is misplaced in this case.

Thats terrible to hear, and quite horrific.

Don't worry mate, it went around the traps for sometime until her website popped up. It was "sometime" for a few very good reasons.

If it's any consolation, I feel like you do right now, 24x7.

FFS. Thanks for merging a joke thread into a REAL THREAD - my comments in the joke thread were totally innapropriate for this one. I didn't deserve the red rep for that one!

Looks like a new member !!

It seems that the girl with the road rash isn't the girl in the video... and it seems she never signed up to KB in the end either.
