I have recently acquired a cat, she's great and all that but Ive just started trying to sort out my Xmas/New Years holiday plans and well I dont know what to do with her while I am away. I thought that seeing as its at least 12 weeks till I go away that I would have plenty of time to organise a Cattery for her, but I was wrong and all the decent ones are booked out. I bloody knew this would happen! Anyway I thought I'd see if anyone knows anyone that may know someone who owns a Cattery in Wgtn and may be able to "pull some strings" for me. Failing that im thinking that I may try and find someone to house sit for me. Im taking my holidays from 22nd Dec till 31 Jan and need to sort something out for most of that period. If anyone has any ideas or needs somewhere to stay in Wgtn or if anyone would want to come feed her during these dates could you let me know? Cheers in advance :D

LMAO! Shes a buggar, I got home the other night and she had managed to open the cupboard door to where her Biscuits are kept, luckily the bag was done up but she'd had a bloody good go getting into the box of Friskies that I have stored as "emergency" feed. Maybe I should just put a month worth of food in the cupboard and leave her too it, lol!

Student Job Search - possibly to find a student to come and feed her over that period.
Or try the local vets to see if they know anyone who can come and feed her.

I'm pretty sure there is a crowd in Wellington who do cat sitting - they come around, feed your cat, clear your mail, all sorts of stuff. Otherwise, get a friend in to stay while you're away - keeps the house safe too. Catteries are often booked out a year in advance by regulars.

You havent got a neighbour to feed the cat for you? I'm looking after my neighbours cat, kittens, rabbits and dog atm, the dog's run away.. not sure what I am going to do. :(

Where do you live? I have an acquaintence who feeds cats over the holiday season. I had this plonker of a flatmate who went away for a long weekend - and I was away as well but happened to return a day early - despite getting a cat cage for him to take puss away - he filled up a roasting dish of biscuits and meat - for the whole weekend. We did not have a cat door!! There was shit from arsehole to breakfast time throughout the house. I walked in, dry wretched and had to stay outside until a girlfriend cleaned it up.
The intellectually handicaped omeba of a male couldn;t understand why I nutted off at him! Jeez the poor cat's arse would have been on fire. It totally astounded me that anyone could be so thick and cruel.
Anyway I have a 10 month old ginger cat and I gotta get him neutered - well I will get a male friend to take him - never let it be said I desexed a male!! lol How much will this cost? I couldn;t get thru to SPCA just now.

Sweet, is there anything more you could tell me about these people? Im not really to keen on anyone staying at my flat, it would be a last resort really.

Lissa- I have only met one of my neighbours and they will be going away. Im never at home so havent met any of the others...

Well, I do go home everyday but I get up at 5.30 and get home around 5pm for dinner then I usually have other places to be most nights so Ive never really had the chance to say hi to my neighbours.... :p

Is Judgeford cattery completely booked out? We've put ours there and whilst it's basic, they are pretty good and not too dear.
There's one that we are booked into over Xmas for a month up in Te Horo which is simply lovely and not overly dear for what they offer - it's small tho so it might be booked out (it's called Mr White's Place).
You could also try a place called Marquis Cattery up in Paraparam - the lady who owns it is a bit odd, but she seems nice enough.
We've found we have to take a bit of a trek to get anything decent for a long stay. There are quite a few out the Kapiti Coast way.

Ah yes, yet another problem.... Getting the cat to the cattery, it needs to be one close to Wellys as I dont have a car (or car licence) and I really dont think that I want to tempt taking her on the bike... Cant drop her off on my way away as I will be on the bike too. *sigh*

We have a similar problem, but one we've found easy to fix. With three cats, 6 hens, 2 (and sometimes 3) horses and 9 sheep to look after when we go away, we just allow someone from out of area to have a free holiday in Central Otago at our house in return for caring for the animals.
So if anyone wants a Central Otago holiday in November this year just PM me.

Ive just had an idea (yes it hurt) has anyone heard of those electric cat feeders that you can set to give the cat xxx amount everyday? Where would I get one? If they even exist. Cause that would be alot easier!

Cats don't usually like being left alone for too long. Without someone visiting every day you may find your cat takes off and finds herself a new home, where there are people, even if there is food around.

Good point, but I am only thinking of this for a 3-4 day period over Xmas. I will be back home again for maybe a week or so before going away again. Damint why did I have to take her!

If you're stuck and you need her dropping off before 15th Dec (we go away for Xmas that day) we can help you out with that wee problem....and some catteries do pick ups for a small fee (I know Mr White's Place does and I'm sure some of the other good ones will).

My mum owns a catery.... in Wairoa, lol. But she gets cats flown from all over the place to board there, may pay to look a little further afield if you can't find anything local (OK, not as far as Wairoa), but maybe Paraparam or somewhere and ask someone with a car to run you and your pussy out there and to collect her after. Otherwise, test her out on the back of the bike.

I know some home security companies (the ones that monitor and attend call-outs to home alarms) do basic tasks such as feed your cat/ dog while your away, water your plants, brief check of the home to see if all ok, etc. Some provide such a service. Naturally there is a fee for this but I don't know what sort of price range they charge. The company that monitors our house alarm offers this service. Don't know that they all do though.
It would be up to you to vet the company if its a private one or go for one of the bigger ones.
Not sure whether you want to spend that sort of money but it is just a suggestion as another possble option.
Good luck.

Str8 - most of the catteries are booked out over Xmas itself -but it shouldn't be any problem finding somewhere for after Xmas until the 31st.
Amazing as it seems you need to book your Xmas cattery in August (same goes for kennels). I know some vets have boarding facilities (e.g. Pet Vet Lower Hutt in Pharazyn street) perhaps some of those still have space?
I'll be around (until 22nd) if you need someone to give you and your cat a lift to whatever cattery you find. And I will even give one of you a lift back "seems like a nice place, eh, Str8?" "Meow" "Bugger."
SPCA might be able to give you some tips on places or services?
Good luck.

My dad used to live in Welly and he got these cat people to come to his house and feed the cat. They also water the plants and get the mail in.
So have a look through the yellow pages? But I will ask Dad and see if he can remember the name of the company
They were about the same price as a cattery aswell

By the time it's 12 weeks old you would have the best out of it. So you might as well at that point just twist it's head off untill you hear a cracking sound.
