New Zealand motorcycle legend Burt Munro will be inducted posthumously into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Ohio today.

Burt Munro, from Invercargill, broke the land speed record on a motorcycle in Utah in 1967.

He became a household name when the movie 'The World's Fastest Indian', starring Anthony Hopkins, was released last year.

Executive Director of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, Mark Mederski, says the film was not the only driving force behind having Burt Munro inducted.

He says the decision was made before it was released.

He says nine names are being added to the Hall of Fame this year, and Burt Munro is the only one not from the US.

Burt Munro died in 1978.
