I'm not going to jump to conclusions, well yes I am, all going well I may have sold my bike for $1700. Bit of a loss but I did get some gear when I bought it. Anyway time to start looking for a new bike. I don't have much to play with (crap all infact) $2k tops. I'd like some advice, see I'm moving up from a 12bhp GN125 and don't want to get something I'll be wanting to flick off in a few months for something with more grunt. Any help appreciated.

Rg or RGV150. Best value on the plannet. Or even an FXR if reliability's your bag.

Fxr is tempting, but it doens't seem like a great jump in power. I'll be taking one out for a spin sometime this week.

I just bought a fxr a couple of weeks ago and it's pretty good around town and that.

But, even though it's my first bike and stuff, I'm already beginning to realise a wee bit more power wouldn't go amiss...

My learner bike was a VT250 and that was great. Bought it for $1300 and sold it for a little more after giving it a little tlc. They are great bikes, quite comfortable to ride, fast enough and good for round town etc. I even rode mine up to New Plymouth from chch and didn't miss a beat.

Just my 2c.

Doesn't the GN250 have less horse power than the FXR, it's 17 I think compared to 20.

My very first bike was a Yamaha TZR 250, 2 stroke. I brought this bike for $1300, it had a paint job and looked fast. I knew nothing about bikes at this stage.

Anyway the thing went like the clappers! man was it fun!

People told me to buy a GN for a first bike but i thought it would be a waste of time buying a slow bike as later i would want to sell it to buy a faster one! Just as you want to do now.

People did however also tell me the TZR's blow up. And sure enuff it did, i messed around fixing a throttle cable and didnt fit the air box properly.

So listen to what these guys tell you, but personally i would buy the fastest bike i could afford. that way you wont be bored so fast and want to trade up yet again (and lose more money!)

If you want a decent 250cc+ bike you would have enough cash there for a deposit on a finance deal if you were considering that option?

Once you can use an FXR to it's max, then get another bike. There's always tricks to making the bike go faster that involve how you ride rather than what you ride. Tho I do agree that for getting out of town, things below 250 can struggle.... Find a nice tight twisty road and go for it.. (sensibly of course :))

Yeah, that's what I figured...

I just thought though that someone who had already been riding a wee while might want a bit more oomph. FXR's sweet as for me! :ride:

Well, yes, but then again I went down in power from a MZ ETZ250 to a Honda CB125T, and it wasnt too bad... Just had to find tighter roads, and it was even more fun :)

It's funny. I went through a patch where I was deeply dissatisfied with my FXR.

Now... for some reason (after almost two years) I'm not unhappy with it. It has enough grunt that I don't have to dip below the speed limit on the open road if I don't want to. It's cheap as chips to run. It's easy to haul around and very forgiving. It wheelies. It has the oh-so-pretty Telefonica paint scheme, which I never get tired of pointing out to anyone who will listen during MotoGP reruns.

I think I might just keep it a while.

Talking about FXR150's. This could be a good deal.

Brand new 150cc road/sports bike at 40% price
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Road-bikes/Japanese/auction-13151441.htm

Green Suzuki FXR150 road/sports replica bike, slim, sexy. Bought brand new in Mar. 2002 but have never ridden it on road, as my family strongly opposed me riding motorbikes. Only 18km!(not 18k km) on the clock(initial delivery milage and a few tryouts in car parks during last two years). The normal price is $4400 and I bought for $3000 on Suzuki Summerfest sale. Warranty, WOF, Registration have expired. The bike has been in strorage both indoor and outdoor(with two uv covers) and still looks brand new(show room condition) and shiny. When I first bought it, I put it outside without cover for a few week and the chain and some screws became rusty. After that I put two layers on and took extreme care about storage, no more rust developed. The bike still looks brand new though and I suppose once you start riding it, the rust will just go away. It has been started a few times in the last two years and I suppose the engine is good(The new engine still needs initial break in. You can come down and go for a ride. If any problem, you don't have to buy it.) I just need to get rid of it as it has no use to me now, so I'm selling at $1200, which is a real bargain if you are looking for a brand new bike.

The seller sounds more literate than your average scammer or bike thief. I'd be inclined to take it at face value.

Worth going round and looking at it. Usual caveats of an engine that's been in storage for two years apply, I imagine. It's a very good price.

Yeah and if not I saw there's some pretty well-priced ones in this weeks T'n'E

My father lives in wellington, might see if he'll take a look for me. My bike didn't sell :brick: . Might trade it in to a dealer in the city, they have a nice rg150 there, the owner is considering trading it.

I took Indiana_Jone's FXR for a spin in a local carpark today while he was on my GN, Great fun. I managed to get the front wheel up on the GN for the first time too, wheelie machine, pull one off at 4,000rpm.
