View Full Version : Windy day riding

I met up with Firefight and Andrew at Autobahn at 1.00 ish to day for a quiet ride in the country.
A couple of interesting factiods.
1 A Gtr1000 does not make a good back road scratcher.
2 A Gtr1000 with a hull attached would make a great sailing boat given its ability to sail sideways across a slippery road with a decent wind gust.
3) GTR1000's have a built in throttle shutting devise that shuts the throttle when large trucks turn in front of them on blind corners.
4)Black plastic rubbish sacs do NOT make very good visor material -This especially aplies when trav elling at 100km/h
in rush hour traffic.

Ohh and Andrew and Firefight are good sports -riding at my -read very slow -pace

Mate threw his GTR1000 around like a trail bike . . . . when he had to avoid a cager that went through a Give Way when he was on the open road. I suppose that the wind was a mild Wgtn breeze, around 30kms.

Good to see that the day was eventful, could have been real boring :D

FROSTY
30th June 2004, 21:21
well best ask FF about that -i got lost 5 minutes into the ride.
I know we ended up at maraitai
I know it was a nice quiet ride
I know FF actually let me in front -probably thinking the whale would act as a wind break

Hey Paco, now if Only I could do that cut and paste shit, I would be able to give you alink, but I can't, so maybe one of the geeks, opps sorry, maybe one of the IT folk can do one for you to save you having to wade through screeds of posts, just to find out where we went today. :Pokey:

F/F, ps are you around for any of this weekends fun ?

Sounds like you nearly binned it Frosty? I'm glad you didn't.

I felt the winds beating on my cage on the way home from work tonight - they kept waking me up as I was nodding off while dribbling along with the motorway traffic...talk about a major difference in mind concentration between driving a cage and riding a sickle! :eek5:

I dont think so .but a plastic bag wrapped arount the helmet was scarey.I just couldn't remember how close I was to the car in front :bash:
The truck thing was freakey--Like Im serious here -for no reason I shut off the throttle completely just as I was coming around that blind corner. Really weird :Pokey:

say FF you guys missed the fun. A plastic rubbish sack flew down from a motorway bridge.blew up my screen and wrapped around my helmet. scarey for about 10 hours -or a microsecond

We didn't miss all the fun, I liked the way you missed the 18tonne rubbish truck, on the wrong side of the road, on a blind cnr, I think I was doing 140, going into that cnr, so what were you doing when you first saw the truck, not a bad bit of rider skill there ! :first:

Mate Im really serious here. I was doing about the same speed-the whale was flying -I really haddn't seen the truck when I slowed down It was pretty spooky-- I was down to 80-100 when I actually saw the truck.
That's why i was laughing at the gas station.

Ill try to. Ill see if I can get out of the driveway without the missus noticing the L plate missing *cough*.

Hmm the bike only goes about 150km between gas stops. Will that be a prob?

Luxury; pure luxury, Mr Devil. The FahrtingSturm is lucky to get 120km before the RedLightOfDoom glares at me, 145km if I run it till it conks out completely. Not that I've ever tried that, of course.

Greenhithe bridge, eh? Brave bustard you are. I went the whole bridge-averse hog and took SH28 home. Which wasn't really an improvement, I dunn think. I set a new personal record for slowest ever Coatesville-to-Riverhead time.

Also I have decided, following said ride, that I need more headlight.

And BLUUURRRRRGHHHHPHHHBBBBBTTTTTBTBTBTBTBT to all those cage drivers who couldn't be arsed turning down their high beams coming toward me. It's just *so* much fun pointing a bike into the blackness mid-corner at 100kph at hopefully the correct angle to the left of the blinding blob that has become the only distinguishable object in your field of vision. While catching fat gusts of wind at random intervals. On a damp road. On a bike that weighs the same as you do.

it just gives ya summat to aim for dude.
It used to give me sooo much satisfaction when I had my old XJ750p on nights like that. -theyd pull the whole Hi beam bit so Id hit em with 2x 120w spotties and a 100w hi beam -ya gotta love police relays and heavy duty alternators

2x 120w spotties and a 100w hi beam

Yeah baby. Gimme that hot hot high-wattage headlighting action.

No really, I'm serious. The FXR is getting a buncha whole new heavy-duty photon-spewing goodness hanging off of it as soon as I find a circular tuit. No more straining me eyes on the open road at night.

Yeah man the 25w stockies are shit.... the 35w's are not much better.

1st July 2004, 22:27
ya know that just adds to my argument for nekkiding an fxr
Think about it -no fairing to crunch and a big buttie 7" halogen headlight -with even a 55/65 would still be gruntier than the fxr headlight

jrandom

I quite like the way mine looks when the fairing's off.

Didn't you say you had a headlight bracket or summat? I could be tempted to have a crack at a 'nekkiding' weekend project, I think.

Antallica

Yeah man, naked is the way I reckon. Only problem is the redesigning of the front mirror & speedo brackets.

I wonder what's a safe maximum in wattage to have for headlight bulbs. Standard is 12v 25/25w, I want to get some 50's or something but dunno if that'll cause any probs.

vifferman
2nd July 2004, 12:33
25W?!? That's like a toy light.
My VTR has a 90/130W bulb in it. (Queue Crocodile Dundee scene: "Call that a Light? Now THIS is a light!")
I dunno what the safe wattage is for your bike - that'd depend on your alternator/stator output and whether the bike has proper wires through the headlight circuit or just toy ones, but I'd imagine it should handle 55/60 no problems. But then again, I'm just pulling this out of my butt - nothing to go on.:D

Cajun
2nd July 2004, 12:59
all my bikes headlights get changed to 100/130 or something simlar to that, i use to do alot of night riding, i have not got around to chaing the 600 yet, but i will get there. It makes a hell of a difference, i have done this mod on my old zzr250, gsxr1100, done it on two of the wifes cars as well.

Hmmmph. The FXR doesn't have an alternator, it has a magneto.

It should be a simple matter of swapping out loads on the headlight connection while the bike is running and seeing how much it can take without the magneto output voltage sagging, then matching that to a bulb wattage.

Except I don't have a wiring diagram.

Frosty... help...

A frigging MAGNETO?!?

Hello - this is the 21th Century, ya know.
I spoze it has also got hot tubes instead of sparking plugs, and solid rubber tyres, wooden-spoked wheels...
Now here's a thought - you could fit carbide lamps to it!:Pokey:

Well, I hear this newfangled 'alternating current' stuff is quite dangerous.

Yup, and an 8-bit vacuum-tube ECU. With injector mappings on punched cards.

Hang on guys ---just think a moment
Standard it has 2x25w bulbs
25+25=50
Ok so 1 55w buld is gonna make jack shit difference to the drain on the battery. 65w Hi beam is 15w more
but reality is for the amount of time you're gonna spend on high beam you'll be fine
It isn't just a matter of bulb size but also beam dispersment (i think thats the right word)
I betya if you fitted twin round headlights with the same bulbs it would light a heck of a lot better.
And a "old fashioned " 7" round headlight with a 55w bulb will seem like a laser beam
I wouldn't go fitting a 100 or 130w bulb in a fxr
I really don't think the windings would be up for it
I mean the rally guys use huge round spotlights for a reason -it aint for looks after all
