For those gals out there that didnt know there is a motorbike club for us of the 'superior' sex

http://www.wima.org.nz/

The membership is small..from my recollection 30 odd members in Auckland which is equal with Wellington numbers. We meet once a month for a ride and chin wag and a relaxed ride. Bikes of all sizes and speeds and all new members are welcome in fact we pride ourselves on getting new lady riders into riding instead of being a pillion. On a good day we even allow the husbands and BFs to ride a along as long as they behave.

PM me if any of you wanna go along to an Auckland ride ....

It's funny how people assume if you ride and are female you're a DOB aye!

If Marion the Auckland rep got wind of the hassles your wife had, she would set things straight for her. Your wife sounds like a gem being prepared to
put time into a Tauranga branch. Well thats a loss!

Ooooppppsss...I meant "female".

Nah it doesn't really bother me either b/c I think if someone is stoopid enough to label me before they know then it's their loss! I'm too busy enjoying the ride to worry about gimps with a narrow mind. I do always think "COOL!!" when I see another woman rider though. :2thumbsup

Hi kiwizxr

It was your website that drew my attention to Wima. As a female biker I really love riding with the guys but sometimes a more sedentry pace is good as an alternative. I have enjoyed every WIMA ride ...but once again it seems the minority may just tarnish a good name.

I was hoping to get the gals on here out for a ride but it kinda misfired. Hope you can provide feedback to solve the problems in the BOP perhaps?

I haven't been on a KB ride because of my group riding experiences in the
past. 4 bikes is about the limit I stick too on group rides. At the moment, my bike is on rego exemption over the winter months-so couldnt go for a ride anyway.

DOB's...well, some of the WIMA rides I went on was predominantly the DOB's turning up and no one else.....so my thoughts were, at least they were supporting the ride so I just go with the flow.

There used to be WIMA in the U.K. years ago.Now female riders are a lot more common(20% of Brit riders I believe but a lot of those are Scoot riders)they`re accepted in mainstream bike clubs no problem.Local group,an offshoot of Plymouth MCC that they all belong to,is called PLATS,Plymouth Ladies and Tarts and they wear their T-shirts with pride.Female riders led off the Megaride charity run last month and there were hundreds of them.

I feel I have to just add a note here though guys. Just because a gal rides a bike does not mean we bat for the other side. Ok I myself admit to not having the technical prowess I should regarding the bike and its set up but I am learning big time thanks to KBers. LMAO we are quite approachable actually and I am sure KK will attest we have a sense of humour and its ok to talk to us when we turn up for a KB ride. :confused2

It doesn't. I just made a comment earlier on that
riding with the DOB's made my hair stand on end
it was a WIMA ride but predominately the turnout
was DOB's.

They were really quick & scary....every gal for themselves :eek5:

Only local girl group that I know of ride all kinds of stuff just like any other club. And how do you know if they`re dykes?Same way you tell if a male biker`s gay i.e. if they choose to tell you.
One time WIMA in Britain were unusual because very few women rode bikes, they were the only club and it was stereotype male thinking that reasoned that obviously they must be Lesbians because they did what blokes did, same as girls that played soccer, rugby, had tattoos or drunk pints, none of which would even get a raised eyebrow now.

You know, I have always loved boy things (including motorcycles) but I
am feminine. I like make up, dresses, having long hair, long nails and wear eau de parfum (not cologne  ) But I love riding motorcycles which is predominantly a male thing. I have a girly mate who wouldn't be seen dead riding a bike but certainly loves to be on the back of one and thinks i'm a bit "sus" cos I ride one, "cos its what boys do". What the hell is with that?
whats the difference in a females mind of being on the back as opposed to
riding it yourself?

I have a male relative who is as male as you can get (hes not gay) whos
occupation (was) in the airforce... he enjoys doing cross stitch in his
spare time (admittedly pictures of lions or different types of aeroplanes etc)
but is straight as a line.

When will the stereotypes get buried??? and we can do what we want without the baggage attached. it annoys me. Although as you say Moko, its
getting better..

Only local girl group that I know of ride all kinds of stuff just like any other club. And how do you know if they`re dykes? Because you can tell through the way they act, talk and behave - and somtimes look. Paticularly the ones that act as "manlike" as possible. I have ridden on WIMA rides on and off for 5yrs or so and there are many lesbian riders who are fine, pleasant, ordinary people. There are also a number who are aggresive, man haters, who make it quite obvious you are not welcome! I have a thick skin, but my partner doesn't and she left WIMA because of the behaviour of the DOB's! We know of several other female riders, gay and straight, who have left because of the perceived attitude of these DOB's. There is also a club in Austria I think, called Dykes on Bikes! Doesnt come much more upfront than that!

My Niece`s boyfriend is a whizz at cross-stitch as well,he does everything from really neat Mythological scenes to cartoon characters for the babies in the family.Another mate of mine is so good at it he was offered money to sit in a shop window and do something over a period of time to attract custom,he`s an ugly ex-con,built like a brick shithouse, rides a 900 Hornet and is 100% heterosexual. He`s also a single parent and does his daughters make-up and nails for her, dont remember anyone ever mistaking him for gay, even if he was I`d have no problem with it.Really hacks me off that the old attitudes still stick around, personally I tend to get on better with women and 2 of my best friends are a Lesbian couple,my relationship with them is important to me for who they are, their sexuality is totally irrelavent.Isn`t it about time people grew up a bit and stopped using "Gay" as a term of abuse, even in banter,if nothing else it`s hardly original is it?

Well thats why I left, because my husband was obviously not welcome
and it embarressed as well as hurt me (to see him supporting me, only to
be treated not nice and made unwelcome by "those" few)

So, I was honest and spoke to Marion the Auckland WIMA rep about
why I no longer go, and what may be putting some woman off from
belonging. So shes aware and was pretty determinded to change that
air of "unwelcomeness" for our male partners......But she's also only human and can only do her best.

I've heard a few people say the same but I have to admit that I've never been made to feel that way.
It's been a while since I've ridden with the WIMA bunch but when I was still living in Auckland I went on quite a few rides with them. You always get a couple of tough nuts that maybe aren't as friendly as the rest but I've found that in most groups that I've ridden with.

Well i had been contemplating joining a WIMA ride, but i'm not so sure i'm that keen anymore reading this thread. I wanted to join a group of woman cause i can't keep up with the blokes, but if this group of women treat male taggers-oners with disrespect then they deserve to get the labels they're receiving, and i think i'd rather be the nana in with the boys.

It's a shame about the few who spoil what could be a good thing for motorcycling and for women too. I know what it's like to get ignored in motorbike shops, and even ignored on rides occasionally by some men. I hope this group get their shit together soon and don't undo all the progress that has been made for women being accepted in to the motocycling world.

Who gives a shit what gender you are? Who gives a shit what you ride, or how fast you ride it? And most of all who gives a shit what team you play for as they say. We all share the same passion, and we should be looking out for each other wether male or female, strait or gay.

WIMA, like most clubs and organisations, does continually seem to go through periods of change - particularly the Auckland branch. When we first started going for rides with them it was fine, then a period of covertly aggresive DOB- ishness crept in and while it didnt particularly worry me, my partner was rather put off and left...
