Motorcycle registrations in New Zealand have almost tripled in the last five years, according to figures from Land Transport New Zealand.
Latest figures from show registrations for the year to September 2006 at 11,000 units, up from almost 9,000 on the previous year. Industry experts say it appears rising petrol prices are a key factor in why people are buying more motorbikes and scooters.

It would also explain the down turn in motorcyclists waving as most of the people riding or buying bikes now just seem to be commuters intent on looking straight ahead and behaving like their former selves in cars
"Oh why is that biker waving at me???" DOH, its because we ride, not what we ride.

Is that why 2nd hand bikes are way overpriced as well?

Scooters are lumped in with the bikes - distorts the figures.

Agree Riff Raff - I have been looking at 2nd hand bikes and they are not cheap. I think crikey just add a couple of grand more and I could have a brand new one!

Just wait until we really get cookin' with the used jap import market - then the prices will drop like stones (just as happened with cars) we'll also get a lot of burnt out shit coming through too.

'Sources' tell me with different set of regs over there for bikes and the high Yen it won't happen to the same extent.

But I don't see an increase in bikes on the road.Back in the scooter boom of the mid '80's they were everywhere, but I don't see more people on bikes.

Is it registrations or sales? Multiple shit loads of dirt bikes are being sold recently.

I'm definately seeing more commuters over a few years back. And bear in mind we're just coming out of winter .
And if you go into Queen St , there's little scooters zooming all over. And lots parked up on footpaths and such.
I doubt you'd see so many extras on the Hammyhole to Dorkland grind during the communter time.. But around town, yeah, lots more.
Still nothing remotely like what it was in the 80s let alone the 70s , but more than 5 years ago.

Like the Scottish idiot on a 250 that you met on the approach to the motorway on-ramp the other week?

Nah, I was menaing an increase in commuters. Nutters on bikes is pretty much a constant over the years. You're just replacing some earlier nut job.

In the '80's a lot of older people rode scooters and bikes....my in laws rode around on CB and CG 125's,they had a car,but bikes were used for single person messages. The kids,7 including my wife all had motorcycles....now none have a bike.Nine people in one family (10 if you include me,but I'm not one of them) rode motorcycles 20 years ago,now they don't - that's the difference.

Granted, we've got a long way to go before we get back to what we were in the 80s (and when we DO we'll be a political force to vegemite with). But, the trend is UPWARD after being downward for so many years.
And it's not just young people, older people are taking up riding for commuting again.
Dunno if I'll ever see double and triple ranks of bikes waiting at the front of the lights like we used to - but it's better than it was 10 years ago when I could go a week and not see another bike.
And the trend is showing up in the sort of bikes that the manufacturers are bringing out.
Big Dave noted it in another thread. The trend is to sensible bikes that people can ride as a day to day thing. I reckon the era of the race replica is drawing to a close.

5 years ago I only had 2 bikes - now I have four but only 2 are registered - does that count in the overall ownership figures.

No, but it says you're one helluva lucky guy with a fantastically understanding partner or single:whistle:
(Not that I have too much to complain about in case Mrs B sees this post:hug: )

The sales figures have been posted earlier by Sd, they showed a definate rise , BUT didnt show the type of bike ,
I see IMHO strong MX bike sales , with scooters and 250 cc bikes , also Harleys are being sent over there by the container load ,,well a fare few ( enough to make me wonder where they are all going to !!~)
I also cannot understand the Sh market ..its the same here in Japan ,,lets just say what ever some sellers are smoking ,,,I want 1/2 a pound of the stuff

I love the warm fuzzy feeling you get when another biker waves at you...
It did take me a while to realise they were just being friendly and not confusing me for someone else or telling me something was wrong
So if you are riding down dominion rd or around akl city and a little dude on an RG150 waves at you, know you will be making his day by waving back :2thumbsup

Total agreement....its all about recognition and "Cheers mate good to see you out riding"
If you're passionate about riding, give 'em a wave (even a nod of the head goes a long way):2thumbsup

I always try to wave, or at least give an acknowledging nod of the head.
Gives a bit of a feeling of brotherhood that you don't get much anywhere these days.
I don't wave to Metros on scooters....
I try to scare them whenever possible...

where the hell is Sniper when you need him ... this has turned into another "wave" thread.
If it's got two wheels it a bike, however .. and yes there is always a caveat, as far as I’m concerned, if you don't need a motorcycle license to ride it, it's not a motorcycle.
Still, wave and nod all you like :) .. the one thing that binds us all together is the fact that cages are more than happy to kill you, regardless of the license you hold.

And now for the obligatory bitch on my part. Who cares if you wave or not?? You have self esteem issues or your penis is too small if you get all uppity about not being waved at. Grow up, stop drinking juice boxes and realise that you are not important as you think you are.

You don't actually NEED a motorcycle licence to ride a Gixxer Thou'. Sure it helps you to avoid a fine I suppose but it's not gonna physically stop you is it?
 Hence unlicenced person on Gixxer Thou is not actually riding a motorcycle - cool.

Isn't that a fantastic phenomenon? Doesn't matter what subject, time or place there's always at least one raving sideshow. When the incumbent fruitcake passes on or grows up (god forbid that happening, wouldn't wish it on anyone) there's another nutter ready to front up and freak on.

Ah - But I'm a better standard of nutter then the previous incumbent - a nutter with a generous helping of Glasgow lunacy - in short, a nutter squared!
