View Full Version : Goodbye Kahn

Today I lost my cat soulmate, Kahn. He was 14 and a half years old, and we’d been together since he was 5 weeks old.

He was desperately needy as a kitten, wanting to be with me all the time. I used to carry him round in a pocket when he was very young because he got so distressed if I left the room. As he got a bit older he got more independent, but he’d still walk part of the way with me to work, and be waiting for me somewhere along the way when I came home. I’d walk the rest of the way home with him on my shoulder, purring his head off.

A move to another street resulted in Kahn socialising with some of the less desirable neighbours. There was a many a Saturday morning where I’d be woken by cars screeching to a halt and tooting their horns. This was my cue to retrieve a very stoned or drunk (or both) Khan from the middle of the road. When I moved again I had to put up with a cantankerous moggie while he suffered withdrawal symptoms.

Through the years Kahn has moved around the country, but always took it in his stride. He was a born fighter, and I’ve tended to numerous injuries over the years. No matter how painful, he always let me do whatever needed to be done without complaint. I hadn’t realised I was the only one who could tend to him until someone else took him to the vet - the nurse will always have a reminder of Kahn due to the scars on her arm.

Kahn has been my rock through some of the most awful years of my life. He always knew when I was down and wouldn’t leave me until he felt I’d had enough cuddles to make me feel better. He was truly my cat soulmate.

This morning Kahn ran under my car as I was backing down the driveway. He died just before I got to the vets.

RIP baby – I’m going to miss you so much.

Ah chick, that sucks big time! Its horrible losing a much loved pet, hope you're feeling OK. They leave an empty feeling when they go, but I reckon you get to see them again one day....

Oh damn... I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

From your description, a nicer friend I could not imagine and the buggers worm their way into your heart eh? 14 is a good age for a cat and he was lucky to find a caring friend like you.

Chin up...

Poor thing, I know what it's like to lose a cat as we had to have our 14 year-old cat put down two weeks ago. You really miss them when they are gone, no one begging for cheese every time you open the fridge... But you can't let them suffer.

I visited the SPCA last week and they have a mother cat and three kittens that will be rehomed in a few weeks - we're taking a male and a female kitten so join our 18 month old cat.

And we've currently got a baby magpie - fell out the nest in the wind yesterday and as it is 50 feet up, I ain't climbing up there! Been feeding it because it is too young to fly, but not sure it will survive. No one wants a 'pest' unfortunately.

:weep: Bugger. I love cats, thanks for sharing the highlights of your life together and it sounds like you two were in sync. The last family cat we had was over 25 years ago and I still miss my moggy. Dogs are okay, but cats rool!

RIP in kitty heaven. =^o.o^=

How tragic! My sincerest condolences also. We too had to bury a friend feline just recently, my nephew you might say.
I am sure that wherever or whatever Khan might be now he will be greatly appreciative to you for the 14 years of companionship you shared.

Sorry to hear about that. I know how devastating the loss of a pet might be. I lost too many of them (luckily all but two to old age).

Thats sad... pets become part of the family, it hurts when they go. But 14 is good long age for a cat... and I am sure he enjoyed every moment of it with you. RIP

Magpies make great pets!

They are real smart, mates had one in Taupo and it was great fun.

Sorry to hear that RR.

One of our puddytats went the same way by being run over in the driveway.
The vets say that the cat knows the owners car and feels it is not a threat, and hence the increased risk factor.

Chin up and remember the fun times!

Sorry to hear your bad news but the bright side (hard to see at the moment I know) is that you had 14 years of luv and cuddles. We certainly know how you feel,we lost one of ours about 2 months ago and we still keep thinking the little bugger will wander down the drive.:weep:

That sucks Riff Raff. Pets are such a pain in the arse when they hang around ya but they have a way of getting under your skin and taking over.

I've done the same thing. I still feel guilty.
We're close to losing our old girl too. She's 17 and still hanging on, but it's a losing struggle.

Been there, done that. Lots of guilt.

Was he starting to lose his hearing?

Maybe he just committed feline hari-kari over the fact that his mistress had spent fourteen years calling him 'Kahn' when she really meant 'Khan'...

My thoughts are with you RR.. Salty was my cat soulmate when I was a child. He gave me total unconditional love. He slept under the covers with me at night.. with his head on the pillow & his paw across my neck. I still miss him now. Kahn will walk with you.. always..

Cats can do some silly things when they get a bit old.....I had an 18 year old cat that would just sit outside in the pouring rain,he loved playing in the rain as a kitten, but when he got old he kept putting his life at risk...silly old fool.I once had 2 kittens from the same litter run over in my drive only days apart,no ones fault...taking themselves out of the gene pool I hope.

He's gone....left his body there for you to dispose of.But I have three brand new kittens this week.....Khan....I shall have a look, maybe one of my kittens is a Khan.

Thanks everyone. Kahn led a very full and exciting life and I have so many stories about him. He'd used up all of his 9 lives in his first year, so I was always amazed at still having him around with each year that passed. This winter I thought he would go as for a while there he lost condition and was quite lethargic. Then I changed his diet and he was like a young fella all over again.

Anyway I've had a day of bawling my eyes out, so now it's time to move on. I can feel his presence and that helps.
