View Full Version : No access. What's that all about then?

The last two nights I haven't been able to access KB from home. Every other web site in Christendom -- not a problem. KB? Nada.
I thought that the site may have been down, but I note from the postings I can view from my other point of contact that there has been a regular stream of postings over both evenings.
It also doesn't appear to be a browser problem, as using Mr Gates' browser instead of Firefox doesn't help.
So any advice the geeks amongst us may be able to provide would be most welcome.
Thank you.

Check your firewall exclusions to see if it has been blocked.

Sounds more poxy than proxy . . .
Do you get an error message from the web browser, and if so what does it say? Check firewall settings, proxy settings, and DNS settings.
Could also try clearing your cookies, but do this as a last resort as you could lose settings you want to keep for other websites as well as KB.

No error message, other than timing out while looking. Most times I give up after about a minute when the dotted green bar has made no movement whatsoever.
Cookies all cleared but that didn't help. I'll have a look at my at home firewall but I'm not really sure what I'll be looking for.
I'm not sure what proxy or DNS settings I can change, given that I am directly connected to Paradise via a big fibre optic pipe.

I'll try and do some screen shots tonight for the firewall stuff and send them to you.
Try clearing cookies first.

Can you disable the firewall temporarily and try again? That will help you isolate the firewall as being the problem. Obviously though, you dont want to leave it disabled for longer than necessary.
To test the DNS, go to a command prompt (if using XP, then Start, Run, type "cmd" without the quotation marks and press enter). Type in "ping www.kiwibiker.co.nz" and see what pops up. You should see something along the lines of the attached image ("Reply from . . . " etc).
If so, your DNS is working ok, if not, try typing "tracert www.kiwibiker.co.nz" and send us a screen dump of what the results are.

All good advice, which I'll try tonight. Also my RSS feed to Kiwi Biker at home has stopped working too. Could this be part of the same problem?

Yes definitely.

Most likely, fix the access problem and the RSS feed should be solved as well.

My paradise cable's been a bit flakey to a handful of sites including kiwibiker over the last few days... Could have something to do with that if you're on paradise.

Do the tracert and forward the results to the Paradise hepldesk. They're clueless but at least you will have registered your issue with them.

I've had issues with the "route" from my home adsl to kb dissappearing, as in its not there, non existant... (orcons routers dont know where to send the packets?)
can access other sites fine, can use a web proxy to access kb. it comes back after awhile. hasnt happened in awhile now either.

Starting to sound like an international DNS issue.

Would really like to find an answer for this, we have also had problems with KB........every other site not a problem, I even went as far as getting xtra to do a check of our connection, line and useage levels etc, as I have teenagers who can eat the monthly allowance and leave us high and dry on KB.......they found no fault (we still have no idea what is) but the suggestion was made that it was traffic on the site at times slowing things down......I noticed though it really kicked in after Spankme introduced the KB Spy feature??????

I keep telling him that Finn, but he won't use motorcycle air, so it's his problem.

It must have been my tyre pressure. It appears to have sorted itself out with no fernangeling required on my part.
