Was just wondering what kind of gas use you get on your 250's?
My Zr gets 16km/L open road riding which to be honest doesnt sound so good compared to some...Soooo i'm interested in how much gas your mini crotch-rockets use :)

Wasp

my bandit probably did about 12-13 km/l open road.
(jetted and exhaust)

thats based on about 150 km a tank before hitting reserve

I'll get about 25km per litre so long as I don't cane it everywhere.

Wait for Fub@r - he gets about 400km per litre out of his Ginny!

21 to 23 km/l on my EL. Mixture of motorway and inner city riding.

Wow.....My heads hurting atm but i'll try to make sence of it all later but by reading the first few lines it seems to equate roughly to what my bike does....damn! I thought 250's were supposed to be kind on the wallet too..in terms of petrol anyway!

MattRSK
12th October 2006, 16:44
Much much cheaper than my car. I dont really give a toss what my bike uses. Ride it fill it up. Its the riding!

McJim
12th October 2006, 16:48
The thing about 250s is we all ride 'em like we stole 'em.

If we try to ride a big bike with the agressive right wrists of a 250 rider we will end up on our arses.:scooter: and prolly use a lot more fuel!

neither do I all i care about is it getting me from a-b-c while giving me some fun! Hell I don't even have a car...or my car licence for that matter! If i want 4 wheels....ill just have to buy another bike won't I? :P

It makes sense if you think about what's going on.

Most of the work a bike does is cutting through the air. Frontal area on a bike like mine is pretty close to an average 250, and unless I'm blasting along (which I don't generally do) there should be little difference in that factor alone.

It weighs more so takes more to get moving, and likewise more to push up hills, but then the energy recovered going down a hill is imilarly greater.

I am surprised by the similarity in fuel consumpytion too - but then I ride moderately most of the time so... live and learn!

Smaller does not necessarily mean less fuel. Tis more to do with how the engine is designed and what the rider does with it. As MDU says, the bigger they are, the less work the engine has to do. Even the big 'performance' bikes can be economical...my old GSXR1100 used around 16l/km on the road and that only dropped to around 12 on the track. Mind you, I wasn't keen to use all the power available:weep:

VTR250 less ponies more torque more economy.

Wait for Fub@r - he gets about 400km per litre out of his Ginny!

Well on 8.5 ltrs to reserve I get a minimum of 255km so thats a massive 30km per ltr  I win, but thats all my Ginny can win at. That fuel usage is regarless of whether I thrash it or cruise, but then again for a Ginny there is no difference between thrash and crusie :(

for a 13l tank I can get a range of 280km, so thats approx. 20.5km/L, but Im a pretty smooth rider and I ride the tsunami like wave of torque that is 250cc (yeah right!) mostly, rather than raping the ole girl.

Use to be 25 - 30 with the Hyosung depending on how much testosterone was in my system. A quick wank before a ride increases it by 4 - 6 kmp/litre. A decent fuck will see around 10 kmp/litre.

Hyosungs are lovely mile eaters. Yep.

About 16 klicks to the Litre for my little red Hornet! Less if I'm fanging the revs (which ... I do!) And ditto for me like others have posted.

I don't care about the fuel usage! People ask me "Oh, you got a bike to beat fuel prices right?"

My reply. "Nuh-uh! In fact, my fuel bills are even more than when I used to drive my car! It's more fun to ride, ride and ride again on a bike!"

Go bike! :woohoo:

I made the mistake once of filling up on 91 before a long trip, yeah $15 that outta do it I thought to myself (enough with margin for 96), and what happened? I ran out of gas 20kms early than I anticipated, stranded in the middle of nowhere. I had to wait an hour for the cavilry to arrive with some spare juice, while biker after biker passed me in the opposite direction, waving out and having a chuckle under their visors no doubt :brick: funnily enough Ive run 96 ever since....

Just gassed my GN yesterday - 243.1 km and it took 7.3 L - that's over 33 km/litre. I use 96 and it cost me less than 11 bucks to gas 'er up.

That's a week's commuting (if I don't ride anywhere in the weekend...as if! Altho with this wind... :sob: )

$20 bucks gas about 270-290 km's on the zxr 250 which is like 13 litres or something so from full until it hits reserve 270-290 ish but ive never run reserve right down really but i got it quite far once and got 330k's or something before i took her to gassy

so full to reserve 270-290 km's so 20-21km/L and thats commuting...get a bit more on open road i guess....i don't exactly keep the revs low on my commute

ok I can now with out a doubt confirm that the mighty Ginny does 298km on a full tank............how do I know this you ask?

Well happily lane splitting along the North Western this evening I felt the bike start to jerk, I look down at my trip counter and realise that my brain is on holiday and I should have filled up 35km ago. So quickly get across motorway to the shoulder and coast down to Patiki onramp westbound. That was 298km but I'm not sure whether the 1km walk to the Gull Servo pushing my bike counts on the fuel economy stats :) If so then it would be 299km

My average is 3.7 Lts per 100 K.

If i break out the calc (just for gijoe :) ) and i'm sure he can correct my math being asian and all .. LOL

17 / 3.7 (being the total size of the tank) = 4.594

4.594 x 100 K =

459Km per tank ( on average )

i think the math is right (had a beer or two) .. but ... i'm sure i'll be corrected if im wrong :)

Must be the power to rate ratio having an impact, also 250's can't cruise as easily as a bigger bike. Either way its still substantially cheaper than a cage

Im getting about 23-25km/l out of the SRX, havent really done a full tank of open road thou, most of mine is just getting in and out of town.

I wonder if the cyclinder configuration eg single, v tiwn, IL4, has more of an influence than the same 250cc rating. My reasoning being that IL4's would seem to use more fuel more often with the ~18k revs they get up 2 versus the 7-8k i give the SRX max

Considering the zxr's only have a 10L tank (Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong) you get around 15-16 km/L..around the standard it seems for zxr's and zr'z I think We have our winner for "worst gas sucking 250"

Some sites say 10L tank, other sites say 16L. I'll pay attention the next time I fill it up.

R6_kid - i have managed 295km out of a tank on the ZXR250A theoretically that is 17km/L but it was pretty nana-ish riding.
skidMark - $20 bucks gas about 270-290 km's on the zxr 250

These ZXRs seem to be getting way more mileage (about another 100km!), though their riders' maths could be way off.

Yea thats a bit rough...i get approx 160 then have to flick onto reserve which leaves approx 5 litres remaining out of the 15 litres in total.
Although that would be good mileage if your tank is half full of bog.

Those numbers are quite high but they are 'A' model zxr's. I know that the 'A' model had a different ignition system which seemed t to make them 'peakier' and obviously more efficient - I have never seen numbers like those when its time to fill up.
Any other zxr owners with comments on economy??

Dunno if it's a full tank (usually too lazy to wait for the froth in the gas tank to die down), but on my bandit I have to gas up all over the freakin show.

I usually roll in at about 100k's, but recently i've been a bit more paitent at the pumps and could prob get around 140-160 out of it?

The previous owner, for some reason, took out the reserve tap, so it's all or nothing, hence i'm a little scared to just ride off and see how far I get :P

Still seems pretty low, however...

Just came back from a trip to Whakatane.
Wifey's Buell Blast (500cc single) got about 30km per litre and my KTM 950 SM got about 19km/litre.

My old KTM 640SM (625cc single) used to get about 25km/ litre when cruising or about 16km / litre when thrashed.

However, my KTM 950SM fuel consumption goes WAYYY down when I trash it, probably below 10km/litre

On a side note, what petrol do you guys think i should use? I'm running 91 at the moment but I've read a few people's posts saying that 96 gets them further than 91. Is this right, and will it go alright in a Volty or should I stick with 91?

Works out at 17.2km per litre or 5.8 litres per 100km. (My commodore will do about 9 on a good day on open roads).

Big bikes burn fuel. The SV1000 uses around 5.5L/100k at legal cruising and 6.5L/100k on fast group rides. By comparison my Ford XR6 does 9.8L/100k on the same roads and same speed as the SV at legal cruising. And the XR6 is carrying two of us plus luggage and it weighs a lot.

the biggest costs are oils, tyres, brakes and services; fuel is almost cheap in comparison.

my SUV is cheaper to run in a year doing the same kms.
services every 15k instead of 5k, tyres that last 50,000+, brakes the same.

if you ride anything BUT a scooter to save money you're a nut.

I got 40 Km/L on my VTR250 on the first fill, so I'll be interested if it consistently gets that. I filled up to the brim when I bought it, then filled to the brim again after 220.1 Kms. It took 7.6 L to fill it back up, which works out as exactly 40Km/L. Or 2.46 L/100Km. Or 114MpG.
I was astounded, as that's more economical than my 50cc Honda 4 stroke scooter was.
On that first fill I used 95 octane petrol from shell, but the second fill I switched to 91, because I've been told that I'm just throwing money away running it on higher than that. I don't know how that will affect economy.
It seemed too economical to me, but I checked the figures, and filled it to the same level each time (where the metal bit ends inside the tank).
Oh, and I checked the speedo and odo accuracy with my GPS, and they're both pretty much dead accurate, which was another surprise. Before I checked with the GPS I was speeding around everywhere as I just assumed it would be 10% out like they mostly all are, but not in this case.
I need to do a few more tankfuls of travel to see if it was just an anomaly or not.

Sounds right. After 3 Rimutakas runs and a 25min two way trip into town I ran mine nearly dry. 260km out of the 13L tank is pretty sweet, considering quite a lot of it was 2nd/3rd gear 13000rpm+ twisties.
Although spending $20 every 3 days on fun rides isn't very practical!

Yeah I thought the fuel mileage would be a bit better, but the bike is heavy and has to haul my dainty 110kg frame up and down hills on my daily commute... so it's all relative I guess.

EDIT: notice any difference between 91 and 96 on the CB400N?

Last fill calculated at 22.3km/L on the Ninja. Mix of town and motorway hooning, roughly 300km+ per tank which is 18L. Not yet brave enough to do the full 396km, would do 350 before i get nervous.

Im riding to Napier on Friday, would usually go in the van which is about 8.5km/L which would use approx 52L of gas. Assuming 450km to get there. Bike will use 20.4L. Loving that!! Cant take as much gear though :(

My tank of 91 from Gull on Te Rakau, Botany last week gave me 372kms from my 13.5 litres - roughly 27.5km/l. I'm on a GSX250.

City riding - mostly the daily commute to the city from Howick.

Interestingly I've also been trying the efficiency of the 98 octane gas and seem to get around 350kms from the tank using the higher octane. Not sure why the lower octane gas appears to be more efficient?? :scooter:

That's about right, innit -- RZ250 YPVS motor, fairly reasonable!

I borrowed GiJoe1313's RZ for a wee while, gave me a right fright how the kms I could cover got less and less the more confident I got with the throttle :2thumbsup

I just fitted a more open 2-into-1 pipe on my 250RS, fuel mileage has got better, gone up to 29km/L and sometimes 30km/L. Can't really explain that one. Presumably because it's made the midrange a lot better so I'm short shifting.

Unfortunately for me I discovered this wonderful new knowledge on the Sylvia Park flyover, in the morning rush-hour traffic, and in the rain. I personally don't recommend it as it's a wee hike to the Caltex back and down below and my gloves are still to dry out.

Here's what my father-inlaw in Canada had to say:

Every real bike rider runs out of gas in identical circumstances at some point- its a rite of passage, the secret handshake isn't far away now.
Dad

Hard case!

I don't know about the 2.5 litres of reserve I'm supposed to have as it states in the handbook as I'd turned that on at the lights at the bottom of the flyover. Must have damaged the tap it when I mushed the fuel cock in my wee spill at Pukekoe earlier in the year.

Ahhhh to have passed another rite of passage on two wheels.

It only does worse if I take it out and thrash it on the back roads.

Round town, pretty brisk riding and it sticks around 5.
Does about 280km on 14 Litres which ends up being 47 MPG

Certainly beats my car in both time and economy, car is no less than 10 litres per 100, I spend more time finding a park and walking to where i gotta go.

So from full to when you need to switch to reserve, you're only getting 150k's?

First thing, check your choke cable for free movement etc, if the choke is stuck on it will be gulping down gas, probably halving your milage.
