Hmmm, lets see, trailride on Saturday arvo for $35.00, or race Sunday for 2-3 hours for what, $50.00? Seems like a Saturday arvo trail class is better value for money to me. Each to their own.

Likewise a GNCC virgin. Just picking up a Honda 250x this morning from botany to have a go. I reckon I will enter the rookie race first, as never raced before. looking forward to it though. will have a go on the trail on saturday just to get used to the bike and see the course. see you there with 1000 other entries. no doubt be knackered by the end of 2-3hrs riding.
do you no if you need a pit crew?

14th October 2006, 06:37
I know from doing the two man that a pit crew does come in handy for things like fueling up and giving you a drink etc. I will prob go do the trail ride one this arvo just to see the track etc

You can sling one of the kids my way if you want( oil my chain get a drink and (pick up my bike) ), i was just going to swing into the pits have my gas tank buy a tree some were and fill up, and use my camel back for my drink. kids might get a bit bored just standing around waiting for dad or mum to turn up.
I'll try and find the results from the day and post them up on monday or whenever i can find them.
look out for a black honda with a red tail section thats me, try not to roost me want to keep the goggles clean.
you don't need a licence for this do you?

This was the biggest eye opener for me, about how bad my fitness is!!!!
5 laps non stop each lap about 25-30 minutes, cris power did a lap the day before and the first lap took him just under 23mins, my first lap was
25.30mins and then the times just got bigger, then smaller, then bigger, and then smaller for some reason
Lap #1 the first lap was the hardest, with not knowing the track and with all the people that were going down and spaying me in sand:chase: , i went down in the deep sand hitting another bike that went down in front of me, my radiator fins poped out and took me a couple of mintues to fix up with the help of the ride that i hit. At this stag my arms were complety dead:crybaby: i didn't know how i was going to do another 4 laps!
Lap #2 the second lap was better then the first, my arms where numb and i got into a rythem, but i was lossing so much time in the sand and the woops. At the end of the second lap i decided to to fill up the bike to the brim so i wouldn't have to stop again untill the end of the race.
Lap #3 buy this piont i was no longer getting passed buy anyone else and in return passing a number of people that were to tired from going to hard out at the start, and also the bikes that had broken down or just given up:2thumbsup
Lap #4 i belive was the fastest lap that i did, i was picking the lines better then anyother lap and was managing to master some of the woops keeping my weight back and the bikes power to bob along and keep smooth, but with most of the woops i did what the bike wanted to do:spanking:
Lap #5 must have been the slowest lap that i did as i could give no more, in the fist part of the lap i was flying passing a few more people and also holding off a few. But my body had taking a beating, with all of the falling offs and woops of the other laps. In the last quarter of the race it seemed that i was just trail riding instead of racing.
I got passed by two people that i had passed earler on in the lap which was a bit gutting:weep: as my fitness was so poor. When i finaly got back to the end of the lap i was over the moon ( just because the race was over).
I rode back to my ute:hug: where i got off the bike and almost collapsed as my legs were like jelly:lol:, went back to the pits to pick up my spare gas and bike stand (thank you to the joker that helped me out on lap 2 with holding the bike up while i pored the gas made life easer) i could bearly carry the stuff back to the ute, had to have about 3 stop just to walk 100m.
I went back to the score bored where about 15 other people were trying to see their times. in a feild of 70+ don't no the exact numbers, people were still racing around the track so they hadn't been scanned yet and their times wern't up. But managed to get a placing of 39th :2thumbsup i think will have to check when they up load the web page could have been 29th didn't get a good look but i dou't it.
This race was the hardest thing that i had done so far on a motorbike, will have to hit the gym and beat the streets to get fitter and faster so i can improve my placing.
Thats all from me ill see you all at the next one!
and hopefully break in to the low 30's for the next placing!!!!!!!

here is the link for the clubmans results
http://www.gncc.co.nz/Event%20A16-Clubman.htm
total of 66 people and i ended up coming in at 40th a bit gutting:crybaby: after 2 hours and 13min's of racing i was only 9 secounds behind the place in front of me, if i didn't fall off so many time and get stuck i could have shaved another minute off that time and move up a hand full of places, but thats just another time to work on.
But on the other hand in the age group race for clubmans i came in 14th:2thumbsup i won't say how many people were in that class but sounds better then 40th:whistle:

Yeah well turned out not to be such good value. They were running late and we didn't get on the track to almost 3.00pm and at 5.00pm they had closed the track! Two hours riding was just not enough and their schedule said 3.5 + hours riding.

Hey there A&R, im from east Auck to, I've never raced before but I'm going to try to get down to matata for round two and give it a go. I will be riding at thunder x quite a bit before then to try and get my fitness up.
Danger
4th November 2006, 07:31
If you want to ride to get your fitness up mate, head to Woodhill and hit the whoops. Thunder X won't give you much of a workout in my opinion. Unless your bike is set up poorly of you get stuck in one of the mud holes.
dammad1
4th November 2006, 17:20
Yeah woodhill is defiantley a killer, especially on the legs, but I really hate it when its dry. Thunder x gives you a good workout when you have it pinned, I did a couple of 1 hour stints there today (no stopping in between laps) and it was all good, mainly the hands and arms that take a hammering, the old 2 stroke tends to want to pull out of your hands when you get tired. LOL.

Iv'e got some bad news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:gob:
i was planing on heading down to the next round of the GNCC in matata, but my mother is turning 50 and aslo having a joint 50th birthday and 30th wedding Anniversary party that weekend, so that counts me out of the next round. :bye: :bye: was going to do another report of the event and hopefully improve my placing. I am just going to have to wait untill the round after that, to see if some fitness has payed off.
The rounds for the GNCC are as follows
Round 1 - Woodhill Forest - Auckland - 14th & 15th October 2006
(completed)
Round 2 - Matatata - Bay of Plenty - 25th & 26th November 2006
Round 3 - Waimiha - South Waikato - 9th & 10th December 2006
Round 4 - Maramarua - North Waikato - 6th & 7th January 2007
Round 5 - Tokoroa - South Waikato - 10th & 11th February 2007
Can some one that makes it to the round at matata do a bit of a write up about the event, i would like to now what the ride was like( eg open farm land, foresty, or wooped like a mother %$#*(&%#) like at wood hill. so i could be a bit perpared for the next years event.
A&R
6th November 2006, 08:33
haven't been to thunder x yet. did the twilight last week at woodhill which had bitsof the GNCC in it. good fun but your right about the whoops - gets your fitness up, still haven't quite mastered them yet or the downhill through thick sand. but manged two rounds of a ~22km cicuit ~30mins each for me. looking forward to matata round. see u there I take it on a green kdx200.
hard luck BUDDY L will give you a report when I get back.

Yeah for sure, i'll be there on my trusty KDX, i'm looking forward to it, but it might be a bit nerve raking for my first ever race. Anyway I will be going back to Thunder x on sunday to try and do some long stints on the bike and to build some endurance, it should be good at Matata but I hope it doesn't rain!

Yeah Matata was awesome, great tracks and about 140 riders (rookies, clubmans, woman) racing together. I was doing really well for the first two laps passing alot of guys and looking good for a top 25 finish but early in the third lap I dropped the bike and broke the front brake lever, so I had to ride the whole lap on the rear brake and I couldn't push at all, which wrecked my race although still finished 32nd out of 42 so it wasn't to bad for my first attempt but it could have been alot better!
The track got quite cut up though and after 2hrs 12 min I was pretty sore!
The next one should be good, I just need to keep working on my fitness before then, but at least I now no what to expect.

Waimiha
Waimiha has to be seen to be believed. If you haven’t ridden there before you are in for a treat.
Carter Holt bought a 6,000 acre mixed country farm and planted it in pine trees. Carters planted over the paddocks the races and even the tennis court.
The trees are 10 to 15 years old and haven’t been thinned. The area has been grazed and well kept. The riding conditions are stunning and range from the near impossible to stuff that wouldn’t look out of place on a golf course.
Gary Powell resident custodian and track marker extraordinaire has marked out a fantastic course making the most of terrain that riders of all levels will enjoy.
The biggest problem at this location is going to be keeping the GNCC team focused on the event and off their bikes and focused on the event..

Accommodation
Luxury
Black Fern lodge is just around the corner and charge $120 per night per person. I haven’t seen the place so can’t offer any comment on the value of this proposition.
Middle
Te Kuiti is the best bet and not far away.
Budget
Unless you like sleeping under pine trees there is an extreme shortage of budget accommodation in the immediate vicinity of the course. Even if you don’t mind it under the trees there is no water, no power and the toilet facilities are of a very traditional New Zealand design.
A possibility for the enterprising is convince Black Fern lodge to let you stay at there wool shed. Something I understand they are open to.
Every GNCC course is different. Each course has its own personality and bias. Courses have sand, dirt or clay bases. Some courses are tight and twisty requiring precise and accurate riding whereas others are fast and open. Any individual course might work towards an individual riders particular style. However, over the course of the series the winner is going to be the person who can ride fast in any terrain.
"Its a bit of a drive from auckland so closer to the date i will comfim if im heading down, if anyone from auckland wants to head down or is heading down can you please reply or send a pm about it, try and make it a bit easyer on the pocket.

During the check i found that one of the house clamps holding the house on to my water pump had come lose:gob: good thing i found it may have poped off and boild my motor.
Also cleaned the air filter, used to do it after every ride, then every secound ride( getting lazy), will mix up some new gas on the friday for the bike, and also have new tyres on the beast, so its all good to go.
Managed to rope my dad into coming down with me as well to help out with driving and also at the pit stops during the race!!
Well mum:angry: told him he had to do it and that i wasn't going to drive down all that way with out him. And hes coming down from Dargaville will be a extra long day for him, but will take him to the new 007 movie afterwards.:done:

Ok the weather has turned to poo's for the ride this weekend thunder stroms and heaps of rain, i have been told that this ride has a bit of clay in it, so rain and clay and hills= bad news:violin:
But with the new tyres should be able to tractor though it all, will just have to let down the air pressure a bit.
As this round count's big time for me i have to go, as i missed the last one.

Well what do I say…………….didn’t go to plan!!! And bugger
I’ll start from the top.
We’ll Dad came down on Friday night to help me out with the driving down and also being my pit crew.
Dad arrived at about 10pm on Friday and we planed on leaving at 7 in the morning to head down to Waimiha, should have heaps of time to get their for the 1.30pm race start, (as stated on the internet GNCC site) with plenty of time for another pre ride check of the bike.
We turned on Sky telly at about 10.30pm on Friday just to find that the first round of the America Super cross was on ESPN. Some of the best riding from Chard Reed and James Stewet that I have seen with the aussie coming out on top.
We ended up leaving in the morning at 6.45am; with not too much traffic on the road it was a breeze getting out of Auckland. I was driving so we cruised at about 110kph all the way Otorohanga, when dad took over and I had a nana nap until we got to
Te Kuiti, then I was looking after the map navigating the back roads.
Arrived at the GNCC Waimiha round at about 11o’clock, sweet as heaps of time better to be early then rushing the last minute to get ready. Signed on and was ready to go.
Checked my spokes and tightened a couple, check my tyre pressure using the thumb presser guide, the tyres were so stiff as they were new, was hard to get a good reading so had to guess to about half a pound, (was way off) but it sounded good at the time.
Had the singlet on as the sun was pouring out of the sky, could feel the burn coming on. With just a few black clouds in the distance (not looking menacing). Went to the officials to make sure that we be still starting at the 1.30 mark, “nar mate, its been pushed back to 2o’clock” “sweet as cheers bro”.
A bit stink but that’s alright, headed back to the ute, looked above the ute only to find the clouds had combined to become the ultimate fo for a dirt biker, a black thunder cloud, hooped inside my truck in the nick of time as it had just started to rain. But not just any rain but hail!!! Bugger. Soon as it had come it had stoped again. And the sun was shining again.
The youth class was out racing in all the hail, that the track had turned into mush, when their race was over their were heaps of bikes stranded out their in the bush. This pushed the start of our race back another hour back until 3 o’clock as the trails had to be clear of bikes before your race. We had a briefing before the race, it just happened to be hailing again!!! Go line up we got told, race will start when the sweepers get back (still raining). I started in the 8th row of 25 with 5 bikes in each row ( that’s 125 people in the race).
The start was a 30 meter drag on the grass to a sharp right hair pin turn around a cone then another 40 meters back the other way, then disappear into a bush. With the new tyres on I got a good start second in my grid into the bush (pretty chuffed with that).
But that’s were the fun ended and the race turned in a fight of man and machine verses the mud/ clay/ trees/ hills and other bikers.
Was powering along holding off other bikers while only fulling off every 50meters or so as my front was washing out from underneath me all the time (but as GR81 says if your not coming off your not trying and boy was I trying). But soon got into a good rhythm.
As stated before it was a fight, bikes were stuck on hills making it impassable, so we had to get off and park up the bikes and help the people get their mud-covered bikes up the hills. Once the coast was clear some other dick would push their way through the parked bikes and get stuck on the same hill that we had just cleared. I powered up with no troubles just have to keep up the momentum and have the bike in the power. Flicking clay and mud everywhere.
After about 14 kays of forestry tails we poped back out into the open field where the pits were. Pulled up and got scanned 1 hour and 15 minutes for one lap crap!!!! Pulled into the pits and had a chat with dad, dropped the air pressure down using the thumb guide again to about 6 psi, Dad stated the first bike through was a little KX85 shit, and that most of the bike had pulled out with boiled bikes, I was doing alright so I took off again, the second lap was a lot better with the tyres now with the right pressure in them. Only 3 more laps to go.
Second lap was a bad as the first but there was no bikes in the way, so I didn’t need to stop for anyone and help out just had to stop for the trees that got in my way and help out a damsel in distress that had fulling off her bike I had to stop and pick up her bike would be the gentleman thing to do. This lap was a lot quicker about 40 minutes to cover the 14 kays. Came back to the barcode scanner and on the screen it showed race over, they had cut it down to 2 laps after everyone was getting stuck. Few!!! I had enough anyway. But I didn’t show it.
Went back to the ute and packed up it was about 6.30 by the time we left Waimiha. Another solid 3 hours driving (with me sleeping all the way back to Mercer), Dad pulled over and we stop for dinner at the truck stop their and had dinner at the pub (really good meals) I then drove the rest of the way back to Mt Albert, got home at around 11pm, Then I slepted like a baby on the sofa until the morning when I was faced with the big clean up
One of the longest days ever
8 hours, 600 kms of driving for 2 hours of racing and to have mud ,trees and other biker hit me , but it was worth it in the end just another day out on the bike.
Untill the next round of the GNCC

Awesome Report buddy and well done for getting through it. I had a last minute change of plans when I bought I new bike on friday and decided not to go as the new bike needed some work and I didn't want to risk braking anything on the KDX before selling it. and it sounded like I made the right choice. Hopefully I will be comfortable on the new bike before the next round.

Maramarua:
Maramarua is fast and open. If you like it fast this is the venue for you. The track is made up of open forest tracks and trails. These have a firm clay base and in some places gravel. Whoops, roots and stumps aren't a regular feature in this terrain. At this location we see the back and middle of the field make big gains on the leaders.
RAIN VENUE: Maramarua's clay is nasty in the wet. If the ground is to wet we will swap to a rain venue. Keep an eye on this site or check Greg's answer phone for updates - 09 410 1498.

Allow about an hour. The turn off to the forest is on the right 8.3 km past the castle dairy (Mangatawhiri) on State Highway 2. The signs and arrows will start here. (turn right into Kopuku Road, then right on to Kopuku Landing Road then continue back onto Kopuku Road then turn left on to Schumacker Road.
Yep it is confusing. Several crew members have been lost getting here. There are lots of roads that look and sound the same so watch the arrows.
OK this one is abit closer to home then the last:yes:
so that means less time driving and more time on the bike hopefully.
As per usual the classes are same as the ride at wiamaha
start times are:
:SATURDAY:
Clubman :niceone:
Rookies
Women
Classis
Start Time: 1:30
Sign On: 12:30
Lets hope that the races start at the times stated this time.:Punk:

waimiha- ah what a laugh I was probably one of those trying to get up the hills! never met a ride so slippery in all my life!
the young lad did well in the 7-9 yr olds on his 70 coming in 4th.:second:
I didn't even finish in the rookies class as punctured the radiator  - probably while falling off for the 30th time- and gave up before the last hill having taken about 2 and half hours getting there. I was plastered in mud had broken my glasses so couldn't see very well and was absolutely knackered!!!:gob: I fell off the bike when i got back to the ute. But it was fun- I think. I must remember never to go dirt biking in the wet!!!! or worse when it hails as it did when I got to the first hill and watched the hails with the water run down the deepest rut that I was trying to get up! Had to help a few females up the hills as an excuse to stop ! and have a go when nobody else could see.!
hope the next round is dry as I need to get a good one so I'm not languishing at the bottom of the table lol. Hope and am parying that maramarua is dry:bye:

yeah was quite pleased with start. wheeling it half way to first bend! entering 3rd behind a yz and a suzuki i think.
couldn't really see due to dust from yz in front i was trying to overtake in the first downward dip. hit big whoops in rut which sent me sideways:gob: :violin: rest is history.:doh :slap:
hospital reckoned shoulder usually goes first so assume landed with bent arm?:doctor:
this is bloody slow finger typingwith left hand!
on the usual painkillers have some nice bruising travelling up arm which has now reached shoulder - my kids are impressed! :not:
my boy came 4th in 7-9yr olds on a crf70 so was pretty pleased as only his 2nd ever race.

Yes this is true!! Im happy with how i went, i got 14 out of 43,3rd in my age group and 8th in my cc rating. Not bad really all my lap times were really close about a minute in it. After two rounds(woodhill and maramarua) im 24 out of 75. So not too bad considering woodhill was a right off after i smashed me and my bike up second lap!
