I picked up a demo iPod 2gb nano today - it seems to fit in the dock for my existing 4gb mini (got the nano instead of replacing the battery again)

but the mini cable is firewire and the nano cable is USB. - but they both fit the dock.

Is it cool to use the nano in the mini's firewire dock? - is the short question.

Please define "fit". Does this simple mean that the connector is jammed in and stays put? Does it charge as per normal and is it transfering your Bert Backarack collection with success?

Yeah, should be fine. I've got my video sitting in my old b&w's dock. Not a secure fit but the dock connecter is mated up fine, just have to make sure line the pod with the dock each time I put in on.

Oh, and USB2/FireWire cables are interchangable.

It mounts on the male to female connector OK. Like 'fits' OK.

Don't forget the Andy Williams toons too

Disclaimer: Air Supply mp3 is for my daughter. Honest.

As long as it charges ok and you can transfer songs, I think you'll be okay.

However, there seems to be one major problem with your set up. Song #2 by A ha. Take on Me.

Please explain.

The dock connector is a standard across all iPods. There is only one dock connector.

If you look at the connector, you'll see it has many pins. Not all of these are used. You can see the full pin-out a places like www.pinouts.ru . USB is rated for 100mA (or up to 500mA if the device requests it and the host can supply it) at 5V; firewire is about 18V from memory, and similar current. The magic of having 10 billion pins on your dock connector is that it can supply both firewire and USB on separate pins, as well as RS232 interfaces, stereo audio, and many other nice things.

In short, plug it in, you have nothing to worry about -- Apple has already forseen your situation ^_^.

A. A great film clip - breakthrough animation/cinematography - same league as sledgehammer by P Gabriel. I had hair like that in the 80s...actually - I still do.

B. It was a request for the music at Miss Lynita and the Superweetards Wedding.

C. I ripped all my 80's collection and compilation CDs - there is some right dross in the list too.

OK?
