View Full Version : SV1000 Revs for Gear Change

Just got my new bike home and confused by the gear shifting schedule in the owners manual.

I have posted a PDF of the page in the manual which suggests the upshift be at really low speeds and that this is an appropriate speed range for each gear. For those who can't read PDF:
2nd - 20k, 3rd - 30k, 4th - 40k, 5th - 50k, 6th - 60k.

SV1000S owners - Is this for real?

Not in my K5 manual.....1st gear is really tall so no make much sense

They're the minimum for each gear iirc. Just stooge about, varying the revs, and then at about 800kms start screwing it for all it's worth. You'll be fine :) Stick some loud pipes on it, you'll love it :yes:

Sorry but those figures are a load of crap. Ride like that and all you will achieve is glazing the bore on your new bike. You are better off revving it a wee bit than lugging a brand new engine around. I'd think 3 would be about it for 50kms and the last SV1000 I rode was not interested in 6th until 100 (third was nice at 160 as well :2thumbsup ). If it feels like you are lugging it around change down. Also vary the revs and riding conditions - don't just sit on 100 in top for the next 1000kms.

I would ride it at 3500rpm and above whilst running it in, otherwise it'll definitely feel like it's lugging.

3500 to 4000 revs and it feels good. Those change up and down fiqures are crazy. This bike will not end up with a glazed bore - trust me. Off for a ride.

Those figures are the absolute minimum the bike will support, not the run in figures iirc.

What you want to be doing is making sure the revs don't get too low, not too high... sounds funny I know, but once you've done some miles you'll see what I mean. It'll pull from 2 grand, but it won't like it till you get some miles on it.

DO NOT LABOUR THE ENGINE, ESPECIALLY WHEN NEW?

THOSE NUMBERS ARE SHIT.

Don't even think about 5th till 100k and 6 till 120k.

Remeber, load the engine, but don't labour it.
