Hello,

I am trying without much effort to determine what this thing is circled in red. I have unscrewed all obvious bolts and yet still can't take it off. What could be holding it on? Should I be taking this off anyway? Will heaps of slime and fish heads fall out when I do?

I want to take it off to sand it down and paint it. It is scratched and chipped. Bike is a ZXR 250C.

Thanks.

clutch housing maybe?

have you thought of reading a manual first?

I most definitely thought about reading a manual. I read the user manual which was obviously no good, and I'm getting the service one. When my dial-up finally gets it you'll be the first to know. Manuals may not tell me if when I take it off, a vast amount of liquid will pour out. They also may not tell me how to successfully take it off either.

It is much faster to just ask and see if these specific questions can be answered by someone. Manuals don't tell the whole story. Thank you for your push for world manual domination all the same.

That would be your alternator cover, much slime in the form of engine oil will fall out. Just drain your oil and pull it off.. thay can be a little difficult to remove as the magnets in the stator are quite strong. A good tug should do the trick. Try and avoid using anything to prise it off (screw drivers etc) as you could easily damage the gasket surfaces. You will pobably need a new gasket.

Thanks Ducman, that's what I wanted to know. Will leave it on there and clean/sand it where it is.

Looks like a stator cover, the magnets will be holding it on. Lever it off evenly, just lean the bike to the right so no oil wants to make it way out. Try not to root the gasket... I would be inclined to check the price and availability on a new one, just in case. Pretty much, what Ducman said

But definitely take it off to clean and paint it, you'll be able to get a heaps better finish, as it'll be much easier to prepare perfectly. You might want to try a small wirebrush in a drill/dremel, should come up pretty mint :)

Stators don't run in oil I am fairly certain!?

The ones I have removed have not had any connection through to the main oil galleries.

Not 100% sure what that covers, but I replaced mine when I binned the ZXR cause it was all scratched up and stuff... if you take it off you'll need to replace the gasget (about $15 from your local bike shop). Also make sure that when you put it back on... you follow the manual in regards to which bolt to do first (there is a order in which its done...)

Looks like the stator cover, just be carefull when you lever it off that you don't ruin the gasket.

So it is obvious one needs to read the manual then!

The fact that you're asking says you should probably "leave the fucking thing alone".

But if curiosity gets the better of you, yeah, rip the fucker off. You'll feel much better and your bike will be much faster.

Or you could just slide your bike down the track, holeing said cover, and check the oil leaking out of it all over the track.

Be sure to check your tyre pressures both before and after removal of the stator cover, and ffs don't bugger the gasket.

And remember, RTV Silicone looks best in red.

That, my friend, is your magneto cover. DO NOT REMOVE IT UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. The reason is simple, the gasket that goes between the cover and the case gets held in place with gasket silicon on both sides, and if you pull the cover off, it will rip the gasket, you will have to get a custom gasket cut (only about $20) cause none of the bike stores in NZ have them in stock at present (unless they have finally arrived).
The housing does not hold oil, so no need to drain the sump.
Just sand it, mask it, and paint it in place, or even dont worry about it!
There is also a little plug around the wire that you will need to silicon back in place. The magneto cover fills up a little with oil, but it isn;t really under pressure much, however you have to silicon the plug and gasket to avoid leaks.

Crap, I didn't do that. I went wild with my order. Crazy. I unleashed. Now I'm paranoid that when I roll on the accelerator my bike will go backwards, or that if I flash the overtake switch lights my bike will transform to the attached picture. Actually that's not so bad. I just need to source some yellow leathers somewhere. Then all the ladies can call me Bananaman.

I painted some enginge covers on my bike, i just ripped them off any old how, painted them (looks very good but to much dust got on the wet paint :S and somehow I got a chip in it!) when it was time to put it back on I just used that red gasket goo and the gasket (clean surfaces first!) that was on it, works fine.
