Alritey folks me again. I've decided to take a leap and start a basic web design business. I've got friends who are extremly fluent in html, so if i get stuck i've got plenty of help.
Anywho, I need a name for it, and it's bloody hard finding anythng clever that hasn't already been taken. So if you guys could please help out it'd be much appreciated.
Hell there mite even be a prize for the person who comes up with the one i use.
Cheers,
Matt

Stay away from .com and it'll make your life much easier. There's also a line of thought that says you should name your company after something visible - hence "Red Hat" - because it makes the name easier to remember. Nothing starting with "e" like "eBygum". Or "i" unless it's an application for Mac OSX. Nothing ending with "nz" because it's cheesy and shite. Similarly nothing using IT industry nomenclature for the same reason. Nothing that sounds like a porn site - "Virtual Katy", I kid you not. Nothing that sounds like an existing site - "utube.com" actually exists, for instance.

Actually, I kinda like "eBygum".

Other than that I can't help you. The only other one I could think of - "The Wall" (as in, we don't need no education) appears to have been taken.

"The Labour Party"

You'll get to make up all the rules yourself on how it operates, get to f*ck the customers over and instead of going bankrupt you can then set up an 0900 number to save your ass.

already taken ... just use your name "Matt Darwin T/A Darwin Web Site Design Services" and talk to people, you don't really need a business name.

Spend more time on your design skills before wasting your time on a name.

Dude, FFS. Self employment, in any form, is hard work. You can't start bottling before you've even thought up the name.

Look, fuck the name, OK? Do the following:

Find someone who wants a website. Warn them that it'll be lame because it's your first; agree on, say, $500 when it's delivered to their satisfaction and just do it. For five hundy you can probably just put the cash in your pocket. The following things will happen:

* It will take ten times longer to do than you thought.
* At least the last 80% of this time will be persuading the client that the site is good enough.
* You'll regret shooting your mouth off at the start about how cool the site will be.
* At the end the five hundy that looked like a shitload a few weeks ago is starting to look like the hardest money you ever earned.

Congratulations, you have just learned how the IT industry works. Get back to me when you've done it and I'll tell you how to stop it from sucking so much.

Dave

Sorry you are having a hard time getting suggestions from the members mate, back in the old days I did the same and got an awesome response.

Personally I think Netfirm is a goodin, but the word "firm" is not very modern as opposed to say netbuzz or netlife or netguy or netconnections or netsolutions,
go the other way around

surenet, yournet, buzznet

I dunno but keep at it, its a important decision.

And you other fuckers give the guy a break, he is only trying to have a go !! stop knocking him:Pokey:

It's you that will make a name for your business, not the other way around. Pick something you like and go for it.

Check the companies register at www.companies.govt.nz to make sure the name is not already taken.

As Spank said Matt. There is a fuck load more to websites than HTML. Also, setting up a small buisness isnt an overnight job. I would say, make it more of a hobby and keep it simple until you have people who can be with you and guide you through it

Your situation was different.

"They" may have come across harshly, but it's done in good faith. HTML alone will get you nowhere, you've either got to back that up with genuine technical/artistic design skills or some real coding ability to connect that front end to a suitable back end DB. Even then, there's a lot of competition out there these days.

thanks for all your input guys... even the negative stuff. I'm still gonna go for it and just see how it goes. only goona put about $400 into the business to stat with. So if you know anyone who needs a website or is considering getting one made. let me know and i'll get them a good deal. was looking at some places charge 250 for a five page website with the same type of functions as the one i made. thats insanely unreal. the one i made i would have valued at around 112.50 inc gst
