Ok... so who's a fan of which (or neither)?

I'm personally more of a fan of Star Wars... but I know there are die-hard trekkie fans out there too

Dunno if this has been done before.. if so - humble apologies

Anything with spacecraft and teratonne weaponry gets my vote. I guess I'm more of a Trekkie though.
Imagine how cool Star Trek could be if they spent as much money on it as the new Star Wars films.

But saying all that, Firefly is the most awesome of all. Serenity the movie, ahh sweetness.
It was the grimy-ness, the lived-in feeling, that made it so cool. The main thing that bugs me about ST is how clean everything is.

Star Trek
Star Wars
Red Dwarf
Babylon 5
Firefly
Dr Who
Stargate SG1
Lexx
Battlestar Galactica
And others up to the 10 max poll options.
Maybe I'll do this in 6 months or so, once this poll is had its time.

Personally i would pick star trek, because they get into the science side of it abit more, they use theorys that could be possable given the right elements, where star wars just engage the lightspeed hyper drive and next thing they arrive at a new planet, i mean even travelling at lightspeed it would take 4 years to reach our nearest star. But i do love star wars too, its problery more realistic in their approch to how aliens would look. Like in star trek alot of aliens look human, where in star wars most aliens are very alien indeed. Considering the age of both ideas its amazing that both themes are still going strong. Apparantly some technology from star trek has made its way into our real lifes. The idea for cellphones came from star trek "Krik here, beam me up scotty" Its quite exciting to think that maybe oneday even transporters may be in use, step in here, step out in USA, or anywhere. We`ve come a long way in only 100 years, imagine what we`ll have in another 100. My grandmother was telling me how she remembers when calculators first came out, they used to work it out on paper aswell, just incase the calculator was wrong. In my life time ive seen microwaves become household items, cellphones invented, personal computers in nearly every house, fuel injection and computer controled ignition become mainstream in vehicles. Its heartening to see my grandparents using computers with ease, it means that what ever amazing new technology were in for next, we`ll be able to adjust and use it like we always had it. Any way, im rambling again, my vote, star trek, and star wars a close second place. :2thumbsup

Just borrowed Firefly the entire series from Maverick - enjoyed it a lot. Don't know about saying what's the best and what's not - voted Star Wars coz I remember watching the first one in 1977 in a cinema and was totally gobsmacked for years afterwards - Star Trek was enjoyable but not Gobsmacking. They are so different from each other - Star Wars is very finite in it's scope having a clearly defined beginning and end where as Star Trek is a constantly evolving thing - I mean look at the Klingons then and now..."We don't talk about it" was the only reference I saw to it - cop out or what? Too many episodes and films of Star Trek too - got fed up trying to follow them all - takes up too much life methinks.

Books are best - try the Gap series by Stephen Donaldson - good reading - and people don't stand on the floor of a spaceship in deep space either!

Any film which has The Empire Strikes Back and the main man Boba Fett will always get my vote! I'm still in awe of what SW is and has contributed, the countless in-jokes I've seen referencing it and the nerdy conversations I've overheard (and participated in) will always be part of me.

Don't get me wrong, I love everything that uses (quote : Spongebob Squarepants) "Immmmaaaggggginnnnaaaatioooon!" but if'n I could only take one film to watch for all time on a deserted island...TESB is it.

It has to be Star Trek, they were the first.Lost in space was a kids program and we knew it,but Star Trek was an adults show and on late...and we got to stay up and watch it because it was real ground breaking stuff.

My daughters who are in their 20's watched the Star Trek reruns as kids and are Trekkies,my boys are watching the reruns now,and we can't get them to go anywhere on a sunday until both Star Treks are over.I never watched much of New Generation,I was an adult then and life was too busy for TV,so the re runs are kinda interesting. The Deep Space Nine thing wasn't Scifi,it was more Shortland St in space....watching aliens having relationship problems is not my idea of science fiction.

Star Wars is a better story and world and much more fun for kids.

It was advertised as "Melrose Place in space" ages ago when it was on tv4. :)
(or maybe that was Voyager...?)

I had to see the Phantom Menace twice because I didn't believe the first time how bad it was. The old star wars movies are neat though.

I haven't seen much of the original star trek series. But I like voyager, ds9, and I'm just working my way through The Next Generation at the moment, it's great.

I've seen the whole Enterprise series... the first season was ok, but it went downhill pretty rapidly from there.

I was pretty disappointed with the latest star trek movie "nemesis".

Firefly, Red Dwarf, the new Battlestar Galactica (which has just started it's 3rd season - have to start watching them) are all great shows.

Lexx was a little disturbing, but kinda cool.

A few weeks ago in the original Star Trek was an episode with a young Ricardo Montalban playing Khan.....who later repised the role in the Star Trek movie Wrath of Khan.I never knew that episode existed, although I may of seen it as a kid.Ricardo Montalban was a bit player who appeared in countless tv programs and movies in some ethnic role, instantly recognised by his strong voice....so a Star Trek episode wouldn't of stood out.

I must be a Trekkie if I find such details interesting.....

Lexx was a little disturbing, but kinda cool.

That's why it was cool. At least season 1 with Eva Habermann. If you can't write a winning Sci-Fi using the formula of "Western noir in space" with cool gadgets & stunning visual effects then you need to break ground and do something a little (or a lot, if you're brave) off-beat. Lexx was one of these shows. Farscape was similar, but a kinda watered down for the sci-fi channel version.

I like some of the work people have done making Philip K Dick novels come to the screen, most notably "Blade runner", however The minority report was a great adaptation to screen as well. Pay check (sic) wasn't a bad effort either.

I'd like to see someone put a few William Gibson stories to screen.

...star whores wasn't science fiction at all, just a dumb swashbuckler in space...

That's what OG Sci-Fi is! The genre came about around the same time 'the west was won'. 'Traditional', i.e. formulaic, Sci-Fi (stories) follows the same themes. That's precisely why writers like Wells, Huxley, Asimov (to name a few) are singled out - they didn't follow the formula.

Yep, Lexx was the most groundbreaking show in the last decade I think, it was so different. I don't enjoy it as much as classic Trek but WOW, some of Lexx was mindblowing.

Remember Johnny Mnemonic? Ohmygod that was so so bad. William Gibson done well would be very similar to the first Matrix film, frikking incredible.

Have you seen the new Battlestar Galactica? It rocks, seriously cutting-edge camera-work, realistic physics, ships laying down anti-missile fire like today's carriers, and care is taken on things like the distortion in radio transmissions from fighters. And tens of thousands of people die, are sacrificed by the main characters, now you wouldn't see that in Star Wars.
