Before I brought my bike into NZ the guys at customs told me that if I sold it before 2 years I'd have to pay GST. They didn't seem to take note that I have owned it for several years and it is MINE to do with as I PLEASE.
So, how would they know if I sold it? I registered it and have a registration document. Do the Rego and Customs collaborate info? Am I gonna get a bill if ownership is transferred?
Anyone been down this path - surely so as there are many imports here.

Hi Rok-the-boat
If you want you can call the customs call centre on 0800 428 786 or alternatively email on feedback@customs.govt.nz. As you say there you would only have GST to pay and no duty. Depends on the declared value of your 13 y o bike as to what you would have to pay. When does your two year period end?:Police:

I had to pay a carnet de passage to get my car into the UK - same value as the car.
The GST is nothing in comparison.
You won't get a bill - you'll be charged and fined as, yes, they are linked.
You're confusing personal and commercial imports as well. The regulations are different for both as you don't have to pay import duty on a personal import, and the GST is purely because you are profiting from a deal that wasn't meant to be for personal profit.

I bought mine back from Oz as I was out of the country for 3-1/2 years... I asked the questions directly to the Customs officer, who kindly took me aside and made it quite plain, that they would never know, and that it is an honesty issue...
In my case, how could I sell this (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=725451&postcount=1)

No longer the case.
Be careful following that advice.

Whoops.. i forgot to add.. The reason I asked, was because I wanted to know whether I was still liable for GST if I "sold" it by writing it off and it then becomes the property of the insurance company, thus being "sold"... Tricky huh! :shit:

It's GST - they are like a dog and bone with it.
What?

No.
Well, probably not - you might have to argue it, but in the case of insurance, you have sufferred a loss, not made a sale for profit, so GST is not payable.
Hey, maybe you could argue that you sold for a loss, so they owe you some GST... :dodge:

been through importing bikes both to and from NZ
the fact is you have imported a bike into NZ, all imports are subject to GST
you have been given an exemption based on the fact that you have owned the bike for x number of years
the 2 year claw back is party of the deal where you were given an exemption, stop your moaning and be glad for the exemption that you have been given

Quoted for truth.
You were given an exemption. Don't piss around and fuck things up for the rest of us.

Friend of mine imported a 6 year old bike about a year ago. Has a document from customs stating a GST value of $340 if sold prior to the 2 year period. You should have been given a similar document when you imported yours. It's all based on value so should only be a small amount for a 13 year old bike.

As well as the value of your import I think you'll find the GST is payable on the shipping and insurance if you sell it. It's normally just 1 year you have to keep it though.

Thanks for the replies. The bike in question is not my daily DR250 ride but my 15 year old Harley that I don't want to sell - but the wife does.
I received no 'estimated value' on the bike when I brought it in. In fact, it was in bits in boxes as it was cheaper to bring here that way. Still, I have no idea what to do. But spring is in the air ... so maybe I should just ride it some ... I'm not far off the first year - if that fact is correct (they told me two).

so whats the consensus?
Unfortunately my bike has just been written off and I imported it into NZ just over a year ago with such an exemption. What process should I follow? Will they automatically contact me?
Thanks in advance!
