View Full Version : Orkland airport - not biker friendly?!

Call me daft (I know I am), but the airport doesn’t seem to be particularly biker friendly.
Auntie was coming over from Africa for a family gathering, and it seemed like a good excuse to meet up with the rest of the family waiting at arrivals, and buy the old man a beer.
I decided to go in the public car park entrance, rather than pissing off some parking NAZI by putting the bike on the footpath or in one of the 5 min loading bays.
The park was reasonably easy to enter owing to the barrier arm not going fully across the entrance lane, (like many other Auckland car parks with free bike parking inside, they use a reduced size arm). After having a few drinks and loading everyone else into the cage I headed for the exit gate. Where they seemed to be using either longer barrier arms than the entrance, or smaller lanes. Not wishing to inconvenience the cars queuing behind me I did some quick 250 gymnastics and squid’d past the barrier on a 45° angle.
The question remains however, did contracted gate NAZI actually see me, and can he be fucked filling in an incident report form at 11 PM, and sending out civil recovery?
We’ll wait and see….. and who knows I might finally find a use for my 15 years of government funded education, nothing like writing a fuck off letter without actually saying ‘fuck off’ :bleh:

Wasan't expecting to have to squeeze out through the gap. Whats done is done, theres no turning back, (though I do wonder when my luck going to run out).

Across the road from number 6 on the map, there is a nice area to nip across between the bollards and get into the carpark from there...

I parked on the footpath at the airport to drop some keys off one time, and some dude who looked and sounded like he was on 'P' cam up to me, flashed his badge with the NZ Police emblem on it, and proceeded to get fucn fired up about it at 7pm on a Sunday night when there was absolutely no one else around. Must've just 'confiscated' a shipment of crystals or something.

LOL, hence I tried the carpark, couldn't trust myself not to say "Islama-Jihad" or "bomb" if they started hassling me :nono:

What you do in future is this and NO payement:
International airport
Go around to where people get dropped off etc....
and you go up and over the footpath and into the carpark..
park up and lock and secure your bike... take your helmet with you.
Then afterwards go back to the bike unlock it and go back out the way you came in and when back on the main road part head out the same way the traffic does..
Park it anywhere near the pay machine is... or even near the trolly contraption is...
I have parked mine up on the footpath undercover part in the carpark..
That way you are not going anywhere near the barriers or disrupting the other vehicles drivers.
Domestic airport
Go into the carpark around the barriers and park right over to the right near the drop off/pick up area as there are a few bikes parked up there.
You are on the ground floor in this carpark.

Same problem at Christchurch airport (yes it does have one). No bike parks that I know of. First time I went there on a bike I did what I thought was the right thing and did what cars do - get a ticket from the machine, arm goes up, drive thru and park. At the other end when I go to leave (having paid at the machine) the exit barrier specifically bans bikes (and pedestrians) from going through the exit. Stuff it - shoved in the card, bar goes up and I'm gone.
Next time I went through the gap at the end of the barrier arm (next to the police post), parked and when done exited the same way. All sweet. Looks like it is free parking for bikes.

Wellington airport is all good. Ride up the drop off ramp and swing right through the pedestrian bars and your in. Park next to the stairs out of the way of cars and your sweet. Out the same way.
Normally a couple of bikes there too... But try parking at the Westfield mall (or whatever the fark they now call it) in Lower Hutt and its a different story. Where the hell do others using that mall put their bikes for crying out loud. The powers that be have maximised the parking room in that place.
