The soon to be MrsLB and myself will be spending a couple of days looking around Auckland on our honeymoon, so who can reccomend/slander some motels for us, what suburb to stay in, what to do (apart from the obvious--    ) I look forward to some good advise for a couple of Blenheim yokels such as ourselves:yes:

otara is good for scoring weed

out west is best for pee

if you need a root (things don't go to plan) then hit town

scenery, culture and places of interest are sadly lacking in auckland.

finn cooks good eggs though.

For accomodation check out www.wotif.com you can get some pretty good deals on there.

Yep, the best of auckland leapt to your aid there!! Is there any post Dover isn't in?

Public transport is mediocre here so are you relying on that or have your own?
My first pick would be trying for somewhere in the city centre (CBD) Parnell, Newmarket, Epsom areas. Probably a matter of checking your budget against whats around.
Have you tried "WOTIF", late booking cheapies site for most major hotels, we have got good cheap accomodation thru that easily.

Motat is interesting as long as you like tons of machinery, I'm not sure its a honeymoon choice tho...
My picks would be the casino for some cheap entertainment (as long as you don't have a betting problem), ferry trip out to waiheke island for a day (rent 50cc scooters to trip about on) assuming ok weather cause its only beaches and vinyards and a decent meal out at the viaduct (downtown by the harbour).

Look up the auckland tourist websites!

More info and we may be able to help some more.

If you haven't been to Auckland Zoo before, get along there.

Auckland Zoo and MOTAT are right beside each other as is Western Springs park.... which is nice to walk around looking at the lovely swans and geese (kinda romantic walk). Oh and you can get the tram from MOTAT to the Zoo or visa versa... as it goes past Western Springs Park.

Catch the Ferry for a day trip to Waiheke Island (cant remember the cost thou.
Fuller's Ferry is the boat company.

Go up to the top of Sky Tower and look at the city (thing about $15 each)
Check out the casino and have a wee bet. There is a restuarant (Fortuna) in Sky City which has a smorgesborg for about $25 each.

Waiwera Hotpools is a nice wee drive and has its own spa pools or join in with the crowd.

Or just time it right that you are up here in Auckland on a Thursday night and meet us all at Albany Speights Pub for a beer. (around 8pm)

Google these places for their prices:
Auckland Zoo
MOTAT
Fuller's Ferry - Waiheke Island and maybe also Rangatoto Island
Sky City
Waiwera Hotpools

Why Auckland??!? Keep heaping North to the Bay of Islands, and maybe come back through Akl for a couple of days for the zoo and errrr... the traffic?

I wouldn't have picked it as honeymoon destination personally...

trust me on the food if nothing else.

If you know anyone with an "entertainment book", blag the hotel vouchers off them, you can get a room in the Hilton for 50% off, all right down in the viaduct, failing that wotif.com is damn good but you have to leave it to at least 28 days before you book.

As for auckland ITS NOT A WALKING CITY - well not in the sense that Wellington is, so you might want to look at a hire car, particularly if you consider a cab to the airport from the CBD will set you back $50.

Things to see, waiheke island is great fun for a day out, you can hire motorbikes over there to get around as well!!!!!
Rangitoto is also a good experience but its all walking and nothing else - good to see though.
Devonport is nice to potter around and walk up mount victoria and see the battlements and tunnels.

The best thing about Auckland is getting out of the city - Matakana, coramandel, waitaks

55bux for a feed from a buffet that everyone else has handled first????:shit: fuck off!!, $10 for a full on steak meal at the local booze barn here:mellow:

Kelly Tarltons sounds good, and I DO want to go to MOTAT, we will be renting a cage, cause I want to do skids on a road that I helped pay for and will most likely never use again:rockon:

The_Dover
18th October 2006, 13:51
yeah, but that steak is probably from one of the pissed locals horses that they tied up outside.

I was merely suggesting that rather than fortuna + skyfallus ($25 +$15) that the observatory is a better feed and you still get to see the sights for a similar price.

motat is cool, kelly tarltons is expensive for the size. the zoo is cool again now that they've got a another tiger.

Kelly Tarlton's is expensive to go and see.... I believe it is now all open again.
Do check their website for prices....
They are along Mission Bay.... and you could then stroll along the waterfront there as well amongest the other walkers/joggers/ inliner's/ and push bikers on the footpath. Yep there is a white line down the footpath to keep everyone to their left.

MOTAT, the Zoo and a romantic walk around Western Springs...... and not forgetting the tram ride (used to be about 50cents a ride)
The Zoo can be a tad expensive as well... but well worth it.
And most likely the only time you will see it for a very long time.

So thats one day taken care off...... then pop up to check out the night life at Sky City. and then in the early hours a wander up Queen street and then along K' Rd.... then off to bed for *wink wink*

Or if you want you could if you had time to pop into the muesum and have a gander at that.

or failing that you could go around all the bike shops on the Saturday....
I am really sure your bride would love that.....
Ok or you give her a credit card and say go shopping while you go and look at the bike shops...

Nope that would be grounds for a divorce.......

I said "a" credit card... one can only assume that they have more than one.. she gets one and he has one...
Her for shopping.
He for bike and bike gear shopping.

LOL

Oh crashe - that's very patriarchal of you. It's expacted that the little woman relies on him for a credit card? Isn't she allowed to get one for herself?

Sure she's been emancipated (excepting the fact it has "man" in it). Which raises another question... does the "man" in emancipated somehow imply freedom only once you had a guy in you?

You can get a Superpass which for $69 which gives entry to Skycity, Kelly Tarltons, trip to Rangitoto and Rainbows End.

http://www.kellytarltons.co.nz/aquarium-attraction-sharks-penguins/129/Auckland+Superpass.aspx

Rangitotos worth the visit but Rainbows End you can pass on if your ever been to an overseas fun park.

I wouldn't recommend food at the viaduct as its normally pricey and pretty average (gotta pay for their expensive leases somehow) unless of course if you want to pay for atmosphere. Plenty of better places (cafes) with a bit of atmsophere i.e. Parnell Rd, Mt Eden

And as for driving in AKL be prepared to pay for parking! :gob:

Enjoy

So he's buying her off? Sorry I still don't see the equality in this situation.

Why doesn't she give him one of her credit cards so he can go bike shopping? Or why does he have to buy her off at all? I mean as someone that loves a motorcyclistsurely she wants to see him happy - maybe even share in that interest and go to the shop with him?

Uhhhh not really sure, every thing is so fuggen dear, we like to just poke around, MOTAT and the zoo ant the Sky Tower will probably take a day, My Lady may want to take a wine tour or look around the shops, I'm not really into touristy stuff, its like its too fake or something. Free stuff is cool, Im dead keen to have a crack at the tunnels under Albert Park, but I doubt I would be allowed even if I could.
I would like to see the landmarks, one tree hill, rangitoto, devenport, south auckland ect....., we are not big on schedules and rush rush, so will most likely decide on the day

Then you need to check out North Head,it hasn't been open to the public for very long....you can explore the tunnels and gun emplacements, check out the view. It's a really cool place, and you can walk there from Devenport.Do MOTAT for sure, doodle around the lake....you can walk around Panmure Basin too....check out the lesser cones, away from the tourists at Mt Eden and One Tree Hill, like Mt Wellington or Mangere Mountain.

theres some really cool tunnels and stuff on the otago peninsula too, not just the Dissapearing gun, but other ones full of water and dead sheep and stuff

I read about North Head on the net a while ago, I figured I'd have to resort to some clandistine manovers to get at the good stuff. Is it all open now? how much does it cost to get in?

I might seem a bit tight but it seems that it always costs $30-$50 every time you get out of the car while on holiday:angry:

There are gun emplacements and tunnells on Waiheke Island at Stoney Batter too- I won't tell you how we used to ride in the tunnels on our XR's,up and down the staircases too....the safety Nazi's will be onto me for sure.North Head is free,or was a couple years ago when I was there last.It would take an afternoon to take the whole thing in,and you'll need a torch, and a 10 year old kid is handy to have along too....they can get lost, ambush you, flatten the batteries in the torch and finally fall off the cliff face.
