View Full Version : The rebuild.

Well as most of you know I highsided my GSXR out at the track last month. Was only probably doing somewhere in the range of 130km/h but the bike (and I) hit hard so took a bit of damage down the left side. Luckily I had some crash bobbins but they can only do so much. While the right hand side was mint, the left needed repairs to the fairing and tank, engine cover, rear fairing, footpeg assembly, bar end (although we sorted that quick - see the pics), coolant bottle, subframe etc etc. Luckily it wasn't too bad as the bike was in road trim and I didn't do any damage to the lights and instruments.

I didn't have insurance cover for the track (and I've had the 'but you could have.....' conversations with enough people since thanks) so I have decided to rebuild her, as it really isn't that bad. Some people wouldn't post anything about their crash(s) but I've got nothing to hide, my pride isn't damaged, I'm not ashamed of it and I really have no intention now of selling this bike, I'll just keep her when I decide to buy another. Thanks to contents insurance my leathers, gloves, and helmet were covered so thankyou very much State, as they paid out with 5 days of my phone call.

Here's some pics of what I'm faced with.

3rd pic has black circle showing the crack in the subframe. $30 got it welded, but then found out when we put it on the bike it had a bend. Very hard to see even now, but it's there. $100 got me another subframe.

I like your attitude about the whole situation. At least you were racing on a track eh! unlike some people.

Note on the second pic the state of the gear change rod! Also the circle of track rash on the lower panel of the rear fairing in the first pic. How'd that get there and not anywhere else?

And now the fun bit, buying the new parts to put on! I love shopping for new bits.

First is the new engine cover. Billet with skid plate. So so gorgeous, I should've bought two, one for the lounge and one for the bike. And at $345 incl gasket compared to $325 for the factory one, it was a no brainer.

Last pic is the state of the bike currently.

Crescent rearsets are from Nicko (fellow KB'er), thanks mate they are stunning. And once again at $500 they where unavoidable as suzuki wanted $420 for just 4 pieces of the left footpeg assembly. Sure I would've got maybe a bit of a discount from my local dealer, but they just don't compare.

The last two shots show my new anti-theft measure. Spotted it yet? Well I don't use it so no-one else can now. My brother does my WOF's so it won't pose a problem there, and I'll blank off the bare end soon. It may be only temp anyway as I'm looking to move as much of the switchgear to the rioght anyway, like I said I'm keeping this one.

Now I'm just waiting for the fairings and tank to come back from the painters, gas her up and I'm back on the road (and track asap). Just got to wait for my new leathers to arrive, helmet and gloves are here already, so roll on summer!

Thanks for the comments Matt and kiwifruit, appreciate it. To be honest, I know no other attitude.

Should say big thanks to imdying (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=2368)(for it is stored at his house and he's doing a fair share of the spanner work); andyman; the team at Sportzone Suzuki (http://www.sportzonesuzuki.co.nz/), Nicko (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=65); and anyone else I've may have forgot about for your help.

Note on the second pic the state of the gear change rod!

That's a hell of a way to get yourself a reverse shifter! Like everyone else has already said, you've got a fantastic attitude. It's good to see the bike coming together nicely.

 You have no left hand grip.
Don't see why it's a WOF issue because bikes can get WOF's without the rider being able to see anything beyond their elbows! with their mirrors. I bitched about that when I bought my bike and the shop brushed me off and now sells cars :killingme. On my next brand new bike, perfect mirrors will be a condition of sale.

Always interesting to hear about the prices of OME parts compared to after market parts found. Good luck with that.

I'm finding it jolly frustrating trying to work on my bikes at the moment with my hand in a cast. Not normally the type that expects other people to help me. Big 'ups' to you for getting on with life and doing what you can to get yourself out on a bike again.

Strange about the prices of Om parts , for me and the CR250 they are quite cheap
Remember that I am in Japan buying with japan wages ,,I have just faxed a parts wanted to my local dealer , comes back at around 100 dollars for a top end on a 2 smoke

with that I have also order some 01 /06 and 91 clutch springs ( as I am testing, )

oh and a seat raiser ,,,,

But SOME bits are just over the top ,,for example the little bit of rubber that joins the expansion chamber to the muffler ,,,, is an OMG!!! HOW MUCH

Then if you Really want a laugh see how much it would cost to make a one off

Yeooowch

Well done there on the bike hope you get it back on track ASAP

Cheers Pete, appreciate that.

Thanks to everyone else for the comments as well. With this weather being so biker friendly, I can't wait to get back out there. It's been about 4 weeks now since I've last ridden, 4 weeks too long.

Loved the clip of your crash. Emailed it to my parents telling them I've got my first track day coming up and how excited I am.

Time for an update. All my parts are here now, except the side fairings that are due back today (were supposed to be here last Friday). So although she's not ready to fully rock'n'roll yet (still got some paintwork to finish) I couldn't resist the urge to try and start her. Connected the fuel pump, put a splash of gas in her, checked oil level etc and crossed my fingers. First hit of the starter button and she burst into life, only 3 cylinders for the first 10sec then all 4. Quickly came up to temp, idling fine. Yeah I know, it should've done that. But after dumping it at speed at the track, with the bike flipping over and tearing a hole in the stator cover, and not having been started in 2 months it was an amazing feeling of relief and satisfaction as I listened to her idle away contently.

Not long now and I'm back on two wheels again.

YUP THOSE COVERS ARE SO STRONG THAT SOMETIMES THEY BUST THE ENGINE CASING WHEN YOU CRASH

YUP THOSE COVERS ARE SO STRONG THAT SOMETIMES THEY BUST THE ENGINE CASING WHEN YOU CRASHYep, seems likely given the solidness of the billet cover.
