Wandering through the security area on the way to my aeroplane I am stopped by the security sergeant. A thin lippped, mid forties, stern looking woman.
"Excuse me sir I notice that the name on your security card is wearing off"
"Oh so it is, its only the first name and the surname is good and the photo is fine as well"
"The card is a security risk because your name can't be read, you can't proceed to airside and I will need to confiscate the card"
Frau Gestapo drags me, protesting about delayed flights and not being able to get my car out of the carpark, to an interrogation room. Obviously fully aware of a backlash from Qantas about delaying an International flight, she immediatly issues me with a hand written temporary ID card and takes my old one away. She escorts me back through security and swipes me through the airside doors.
So here I am airside, in control of an aeroplane (can be a dangerous thing), with a hand written piece of card for a security ID and still no-one has asked me to prove my name with any sort of Photo ID (remember my old one was taken because It was supposedly unreadable and was therefore a security risk). Frau Hitler had just assumed that because I was wearing a pilots uniform, had an obscured ID card, I was above board. She had ticked several boxes, blindly followed her procedures and had done some appropriate paperwork.
Had a few mins to spare so I stuck my passport in me back pocket and wandered back up the bridge to security and confronted her. I held up my piece of card which only had my name and the date on it alongside some security motif and asked her.
"How do you know that this is my name and that I am this person?"
Her Jaw hit the ground as she realised my point.
"Even banks need photo ID and yet you have just assumed I am who I am. You are aviation security and have let me airside"
"Well its not in our proceedures"
Her smirking subordinates were silently giving me approving looks as I proceeded to show her my passport and advise her that I was to be filing an aviation security related concern with regard to airside security.

When I was doing some building work on the airport terminal extensions last year, they just let us wander on and off the apron with no more ID than a length of 4x2 and a hammer. Fortunately we don't have many terrorists in NZ eh! (yet)

I've been on a bunch of smaller domestic flights where the planes have no cabin doors, no cabin crew (just pilots), and no metal detectors or screening at the airport.
I'm surprised they can still get away with that.

With a clipboard, hardhat and hi vis vest you can get into most places. My partner works in some pretty "secure" buildings around wellington. She hates it when I just suprise her at her desk "who let you in?????!!!!!"

19 seats and under does not require a 3rd crew member (that's why the beech's, jetstreams/bandits/metros are 19 or less)
i guess if you want the security at domestic airports, erxpect to pay for it. for avsec/caa, it's a calculated risk assessment.
and my story with airside security - actually airside 'rozzers' (not cops - airport security @ auckland international).
i was picking up a bright yellow freedom 737 from the international terminal - gate 1, which is tucked in - first on the right as you walk out the international lounge, and is hidden from the tower's view.
i had just finished picking up 2 73's from the domestic apron, which operates on a distinct frequency.
i drove the tug down to international, hooked up and called on the international 'apron' control frequency (different to domestic apron control) for pushback and tow clearance from gate 1, international. i got a clearance via various points, which was to take me reasonably close to the rear of a couple of 74's, but the 73 is small compared.
i pushed back and started the tow. as i drove up to gate 8, i saw a beacon on a 74 at gate 9, and it was starting to be pushed back - full of pax!
about then the radio crackles into life, and my position is queried - basically 'what are you doing there? you don't have clearance! hold where you are!' not very happy! i duly waited for the 74 pushback, and subsequently carried on, albeit with a new clearance via 5 or 6 holding points grrrr.
as i was cruising past the domestic terminal an airport security telstar with disco lights and siren pulls alongside the tug, and tells me that they want to talk to me when i stop in the the hangar.
now naughty me - i had left my ID and airside licence in my jacket in the hangar! oops! i cruised s l o w l y into the hangar apron. wondering what i could do, as i could get fined heavily for not carrying my ID/licence, and maybe even lose my job.
one of the guys come out as i'm crawling along (not normal to be crawling) and seeing the disco lights jumps in the tug to ask what was wrong. a quick story, and he quietly walks over to my tool box, gets my id, and walks casually back to the tug. the disco car dude is yelling at me to hurry up. i'm towing a $30 million aeroplane dude - i don't want to scratch it.....
i park, big argument ensues, foreman gets invloved, they try to take my licence off me, threatening a $2000 fine. we go storming up to apron control (which is run by AIAL as opposed to air traffic control) and listen to the tape.
sure enough, i had clearance..........
i never did see disco bob again

Thats pretty standard. They couldnt really get the plane away from NZ, and its not like losing the sky tower will affect us

There's no such thing as "Aviation Security".

We are currently involved in the refurbishment/redesign of Wellington airport. We got called in by the WIAL bosses to sort out security... a person waiting for a passenger on an international flight wanted a smoke so walked through the construction area (without being challenged) and sat on the apron having smoking - about 10 - 15m from a fuel tanker! Apparently there was only some "Restricted Area" tape stopping him from getting through...

aviation security... pft its like a 3 month course. They cant actually detain you, they just get in a huffy and cause a fuss. They have to call police to hold you, but if it is airside im pretty sure only customs can take care of things.
Oh and you tug boys certainly dont normally much around, i remember getting a ride from domestic loading to the service hanger in one of the electric carts and we werent exactly getting away from the dude towing the 73' from gate 32 to the hangar.

At least some carry guns. I wonder how many can actually hit what they aim at

Auckland is using up a large quota of video surveillance cameras.
There used to be 200 and now there are over 400 cameras.
You will find it difficult sitting on the bog reading a playboy soon...:done:

I must be getting old - I can recall when you walked out to the plane through the terminal door across the apron, see people getting of the plane on international flights and even talk to them as they cleared customs......and if you wanted to look at the airyplanes...why sure, just stand out here.........
Now, the whole bullshit , big bucks, high security (to people who don't matter), stress inducing miasma of airports, makes me wish there was some other way of getting around the world other than a rowboat!

Good story I bet she wil be panicking tomorrow. OTT Did you intrsuct at the Airline Flying Club in the early 90's. If you did then you would have done my CPL in '92. Small world eh
