Hey guys
Has anyone here got any ideas on how to solve this pathetic problem (pathetic as in it should never have been one in the first place)? Maybe you have gone through it, or know someone who has, etc...
I bought the new Navman iCN720, which looks great. The only problem is that I can't get the stupid sucker mount to stick to the windscreen (or the door windows, or the dashboard, or the lounge window, or the stove, the lounge table, etc...). I'd like to try sticking it on the arse of whoever invented this bloody sucker mechanism. I'm told the previous models of the actual Navman unit came with different sucker brackets?
This new one has a mechanism which either slides to attach it, or slides back to remove it... I've tried putting it on the glass first, then sliding the mechanism closed. I've tried leaving the mechanism closed and just pushing it onto the glass like a normal suction cup. I've tried on dry glass and on wet glass. I tried with a dry sucker and with a wet one. I tried for 30 minutes, becoming too late for and giving up going out to a movie I wanted to see. I also got someone else to try (thinking maybe it's just me who is retarded), but they can't get it on either. I've attached some pics, the last two show the bracket with mechanism closed and then open (or vice versa)...
Any ideas?
(I stopped trying just before I knew I would smash the bracket into many many pieces, and I came back inside and went to bed because I knew if I drove off to my movie I'd get myself into trouble, either by getting a ticket or from some other road rage fuelled crazyness). fffffffffcuk!!!

Looked on the net and found the following remark...
"...It has been reported by quite a number of NAVMAN GPS Sleeve users that the original NAVMAN supplied bracket would fall off the windscreen no matter how carefully it was applied. Some people are more prone to this because they have coated windscreens which provides a reduced suction between the windscreen and suction cup. (http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/navmanmod.php)"
Sorry didnt find a solution (at least for the moment)

Yeah, that's what I thought...
An important piece of info: This problem is with the suction cup only. The latest Navman GPS unit is stunning and amazing, lots of nice features to keep you functional and occupied, if you like to fiddle.

For a more permanent solution you could go somewhere like Smith & Smith and ask what sort of adhesive they use to stick mirrors onto windscreens.

Go to the pharmacy and get a couple of aclohol wipes - 20 cents each.
Wipe the windscrren and wipe the sucker mount.
Let them dry and it should work a treat.
I use the garmin sucker mount and it never missed a beat on the bike for the GC.

Sounds like it has a hole in it or air is leaking in somewhere. Try on a pane of glass so you can detect what is happening.
If it still doesn't stick the it wont for the shop you got it from. Take it back to the shop and see if they can get it to work.

SatNav is just a frivolity in NZ given the number of roads and the size of the country, although I admit at times it may be prudent to consult a map ot two...

You would think that I'd be used to things routinely going wrong, you know, what with every fcuking thing I do or am screwing up. I think this is the last straw, it sounds stupid to be going berko over something seemingly so insignificant, but I seriously am loosing it. Seriously. I'm so sick of it. You'd think that just once you could get something, do what it says and have it work.
It's still not working, a few days later and many hours sitting in the car trying to get it to stick to anything... I took it back to the store, and they stuck it onto a small window in one of their doors. The stupid thing seemed to stick first time, like Murphy would have it. I even got it sticking myself on the shop window outside, I actually had some trouble getting it off. That was the only time it did though, before then and since then nothing. I sent Navman one last help request in sn attempt at sorting this out and bringing me back from the edge. I'll let you know how that, and I go.

Hehe, nah - you're not gonna get me on that front :dodge:
Like I said, the actual GPS unit is brilliant. I tried it out by resting it on my dash board and taking corners really slowly, and it's perfect and accurate. It even gets my speed spot on, and in real time. Great screen, great functionality, great software. I was amazed at the accuracy of the GPS (obviously all good GPS's are accurate, but this is my first) and the software. As you pass a road or landmark, it's updated on the GPS realtime. Like some have said already though, in NZ there's not much need for one, that is until I go down south in a couple of months.
If you're getting a GPS, in spite of the fcuking sucker cup / mount, get the Navman, it really is that good. The new ones have a handy Fuel and Park button (two of many nice features), hit either one and it finds you the nearest servo or parking area.
Not knocking the Garmin though, they are really big over in the UK for example. I have always had a preference for Navman, I don't know why...

Stonechucker - All the best in getting the sucker to suck onto your vehicle window.
Never give up... walk away for a while and then go back to it... you will succeed.
Come on mate, you aint gonna let a little thing like this beat you, after what you have been throu this past year...
I got a whole bag full of those mirror cleaners here... so if you need some let me know.... and I will send some to you.
Is it the angle of the window maybe... does it have a slight bend in the window like it aint dead straight like a shop window which is preventing it sticking to your window.
You could always take it back into the shop and say to them ok you say it fits.. come out to my vehicle and show me....

Put a thin smear of glycerol over the contact surface (ie the outer edge of the suction cup thingy)

Thanks for the suggestions y'all. I'll try the glycerol and let you know. I tried the alcohol swab tip too, which had no positive effect. I e-mailed Navman, and they replied explaining how to pull back the mechanism, push it staight on and firmly against the glass and then slide the mechanism forward to "lock" it into place. I replied, telling them I have already tried that repeatedly...
Sorry Crashe, I have already given up. I'm only bothering to see what Navman say to see if they can help. I may take it back to the shop to have them show me how (on my vehicle), although I'm not sure if they'll care as 1) They stuck it to their shop door's glass, and 2) they're salesmen, not likely to help if they think it is working.
After that, I don't actually care, I'm not even going to bother taking it back to try get my money back, I don't care about that either. I've stuck it somewhere where it can gather dust and I can forget about it. It is a pity, I love the actual unit...

what if you go back to the shop and instead of sticking it to one of their windows get them to stick it to your car for you? seems pretty simple to me....

Ok. To fully explain the cause & solution, check out the pics on my first post again. The sucker end that you stick to the window has a sliding mechanism on it, which is used to attach and detach the sucker mount. To attach the mount, you pull the mechanism back, press it firmly against the window and firmly push/snap the mechanism forward towards the window to lock it in place. This is the reply that Navman gave me in response to my support request, and this is what I'd been doing all along. The solution:
For some reason, tonight the sliding action of the device changed. It used to slide smoothly to lock in place, which never actually locked the sucker but rather made it fall off 10 seconds later. Tonight, when I tried one last time, after I pulled the mechanism back and pushed it firmly against the window, when I pushed forward I immediately came up against strong resistance, which when pushed through, locks the suction cup against whatever surface with a loud click/snap, leaving an untouchable suction mount. I couldn't pull it off even when I tried. Even when I pull back / release the mechanism to release the suction mount, I have a little trouble removing it. So there must have been something slightly out of alignment in the suction mechanism, which was reset back into place, because so far it's working every single time. And the good thing is that even if it stopped working (the suction mount), I know how it's meant to work, so I know when and if I need to take it back to the retailer.
So to summarise, like I said numerous times, the new Navman iCN720 is a brilliant GPS solution. The only issue I had was with the suction mount, and even then like I said, I found the actual unit to be superb even on its own. I hope I haven't put anyone off, if you're looking for an in-car GPS solution, the Navman iCN720 gets the StoneChucker (r) SEAL Of Approval (get it.. seal..? haha). I'll write a user review of it in a week or so, for those that are thinking of buying, for those that want to compare, and even for those who get sexual gratification simply from reading words which I have written...

Heh, I'm glad you get a kick out of it:innocent: In hindsight it is slightly amusing. On a serious note, it not only sounds stupid, it is stupid, but I have had a really really hard past 5 or 6 days. It obviously wasn't just the suction mount issue, but I honestly felt the closest to loosing it I have ever felt before. It's been weird:mellow: , anyhoo....
Like I edited & added in above, I'll write a review of it in a week or so, once I've had a chance to use it properly. So far I'm real happy with it.
