View Full Version : Bike Models

Since my bike was off the road for nearly 10 months, I found another way to calm the bike beast inside without actually having a real bike lol...
I started building those Tamiya bike models... so far I've built 6. I've screwed up every single one of them... in different ways...
The first one I built was an R1... I built the whole bike... and screwed up the forks/steering... and then only painted the bike once it was built... so it looks really crumby...
The second one I built was the Busa... with went without qa hitch except for the paint job... I couldn't figure out the stupid paint guide paper thingy... and ended up just doing it my way... the shit way lol...
The third one I built was the yellow Honda... which went without a hitch except for the decals... which proved to be a pain in the ass to put on... but I caught on quickly :)
The forth bike I built was the Rossi honda... which I thought was going to be a lot harder because it has so much decals... however, it was rather easy...
The fifth bike was the Kawasaki... which came with transparent green fairings... Sam tried to talk me into painting them.... but I thought they'd look good transparent so I left them that way... possibly the most "sound" bike I've built without parts falling off or screwing up the paint job...
And the most recent one I've built is the Yamaha R1 in the Annaversary (sp) colours... This bike was built perfectly except for the steering, which doesn't turn or move at all lol...
I love my model bikes :) And I love building them :)
The next bike on the list is a ducati racing bike (I forget which one exactly)... but i think its about time a red bike joined the ranks...
Tamiya doesn't have a very wide range of bike models to choose from... as I only want to build sports bikes from the last 6-8 years... they have a lot of older bikes and some cruisers... but yeah...
Anyway.... heres some pics

You should build them :) Its not that hard... the more you do the quicker it becomes... but heres a tip... paint all the parts BEFORE you start building it... makes it faster and it looks better lol

They vary in price... it depends on which brand you get (Tamiya... and other ones lol). And the model.
I brought Sam a Ducati model, and hers was bigger than the tamiya ones (looks more like a toy then a model), and the detail for the engine and such was shit... So Tamiya by far is the best...
Your looking at paying between $40 and $70 per model. Then you'll need to buy two paint brushes (A thin one and a big-ish one), a craft knife, some tweezers (for the wires and small niggly parts... I have small hands and still struggle to get certain parts on without tweezers). Some measuring tape (to measure the wire when you cut it... like 8mm or 48mm etc).
The paints can be brought from the same model shop where you buy the model, you will need to open the box and check the manual on which colours to buy... generally you'll need; Black, Gun metal and Titanium Gold... the rest will depend on which model your building... I recommend the Tamiya paints and not the enamel paints...
Also paint the parts before you start to build the bike... If its your first time it could take a while... I've done 6 now so on average it takes me a day and half to complete a model... And I still screw at least one thing up on each bike lol

Yeah that Tamiya site doesn't have ALL the models they have released and a lot of the newer ones arn't on there... Like the Yamaha R1 in Annaversary colours... my model shop had it in the yellow (as pictured above) and in white with the same decals... In the last 4 months they've only brought in two new bike models (those two yamahas)... so I usually have to wait a while for a bike to come in that I'd want to build...

Usually on the instructions (at least for the Tamiya models) you'll find the wire length already measured out so you don't need a measuring tape or ruler. Looking good PF, you've more patience then me! ( I hate the water slide decals with avengence!)

True... I never even thought of measuring the wire/cable with the picture in the book lol... *will remember that*
Yeah those water slide decals are a pain... the trick is to use hot water, and only dip the sticker in for about 5 seconds then it slides off easy... putting a drop or two of water on the fairings (or where ever the decal is going) helps too for when you need to slide it around an adjust its position...

yeh, im a collector though, and things are worth more left as-is. for example, i like my bikes to be totally stock, or at least able to be returned to such. i do small changes [ie, change out the original grabrail so a top box can be fitted]
i like things to be mint. tags etc left on toys, crack free crockery. the usual.
in saying that, someone would likely pay a fair bit for you collection should you ever decide to sell.

I'm not sure I'm sorry... I only know my model shop (Aces Models in Highbury). Try looking in the Yellow Pages... and check TradeMe for "Tamiya" and then search through about 6 pages for the "bike" ones... they sometimes have some good ones on there... birthday presents that people never really wanted lol... Prices on TradeMe are only slightly cheaper then in the shops, but you still need to buy the paints and glue and stuff..

lol don't worry it won't... as i mentioned... you should paint it first... then you have to wait for the paint to dry... and then when you start to build it... you'll need to wait for about 5 minutes for each section of glued parts to dry... and even when they have dried sometimes they still fall apart... so you have to do it again... its frustrating... but rewarding at the end when your effort and time results in a stunning bike YOU built :)
No-one else will appreciate it as much as you will :)

They are a real labour of love. Definitely quite a few hours work, no worries. All the little parts need to be painted before you start assembly. Tweezers are a must!

There's a model shop round the back of Newmarket (can't remember the St name, but it backs onto where the Rialto Cinema is). Walked past the other night and it has a big range of model bikes on display. My partner's got a Ducati 999 which was a labour of love & patience :pinch:

Ace Hobby in Birkenhead (opposite the KFC and next to the bar) is pretty good if you're on the shore, they mainly do kitsets and have a pretty sweet collection of planes, bikes, cars, and military.

Muwahahaah!!! Once you start, you can't stop! I've been an avid builder of little scale models for donkey's years now! I just know if I got started building bike models I'd end up with enough to start my own floorshow. Tanks, planes, little soldier men....
Must...resist...temptation...(too late, a mate of mine has just offered me his R1 kit to finish off since hes had it for a year and hasn't finished it yet...aieee!)
Sounds like you are building up a nice little modelling tool kit! So you going to acquire needle files, modelling putty, dremel tool, cutting mat...oh the list goes on!
Good on ya fer expanding your love for biking into smaller realms...so when does the mini-moto begin? :msn-wink:

lol yeah... I love building them... I actually built a Virgao first when I first got to NZ and didn't work or study... have no idea where its gone, but earlier this year I started building them again...
I don't build any of the other models though... Just the bikes... I brought my cousin a plane (jet??) for christmas with all the coloured paints and shit that he needs to build it... thought it would be great cause he wants to be a pilot... but he hasn't even started it... last time I saw it he said he might give it back to me to build for him... but I'm not into planes... or cars or boats... just the little motoMaBikles for me!
The guy at the model shop asked me if I wanted to take my bikes in to put in his display cabinet for a while... but I said no... cause I know all the little things I screwed up on each bike lol

Have a look here (http://pages.interlog.com/~khartlen/sitendx/sitendx.htm), lots of tips if you really want to go to town. I've built the Tamiya Blackbird, and I've got a Ducati 916 to start on some time. As far as plastic kits go, I mostly build aircraft, and something different every now and then for a change, such as tanks, cars, ships, bikes. Although mostly I build RC planes and have an RC yacht on the go at moment. I've been making models since I was 8, I just wish I could find some more spare time to put into the hobby. I'm surprised, to see how many modellers are on here.

Yea, get Tamiya. Their kits are awesome.
And as for time, it doesn't matter. It took me like 2-3 months on and off (sometimes i didn't touch the model for over a week) to make that CB750F, it's not a race. You just do it when you feel like it.
The motogp racers etc are like $50-$60. Some of the older ones made in the 80s are good way to start off, abit cheaper, so you don't feel so bad if you cock up, but the detail is still very good (that CB750F is from '81 I think?)

The Protar 1/9 th scale models were awesome - the MV Augusta 350/3 I made even had a little crankshaft and pistons in it!
The Honda 250/6 and Yamaha 250 V4 were great models as well - I don't know if they are still available - probably still are on Ebay. I bought mine back in the early 70's

I started with the little ones you could get from the wharehouse, moved on to
Minichamps metal models, the details are outrageous, steering dampers with slides that work,I have 14 of them, ranging from a Barry Sheene RG500,to Rossis white anniversary M1,most of them are Moto GP or 500cc GP bikes
The best,or most favourite is my Britten,its a kitset,made of pewter,painted & assembled,very cool
