OK - last 2 years we had a bbq at our place. Last time was NOT publicised 'cos i was having a major spaz BUT it was not a wildly popular happening and a dreadful day.
So - this year? Does anyone in Wellington have a better idea?
Suggestions?
A repeat of Slingshots ride with a xmas type feed at the pub?
A BBQ at a park?
A BBQ at some mugs place?
Nothing - bah humbug who needs xmas?
Any sensible suggestions????

Well... myself and another KBer (who owns a little slice of paradise out beyond Masterton) were talking about the possibility (OK it was my idea) of having a BBQ/party post ride around the 'rapa. Thought about doing it in the new year but I dont see why it can't be sooner. All I/we have to do is get the big shed built so there's some sort of accomodation on site... Other than that it's a paddock with a lake and a hill. Still, events have been held with less...

What about we invite a bunch of Pommy immigrants and then burn them in one of those big Celtic Wicker Men like my ancestors used to?
Colapop

My ancestors used to invade other countries and rape, murder and pilage (sometimes in a different order) but I'm not sure that, that would be entirely appropriate - even if it does sound like fun!

A bbq at "some mugs" place has worked well before....but after the 1/10 ride there could be a problem accomodating that sort of crowd? BBQ at a park could be good (Otiahanga Domain springs to mind, or QE park)
Are we thinking a Sunday lunch or a Saturday night party?

Col's idea sounds like a mini rally, which sounds good to me. Ride, eat, drink, be merry and yahoo and then crash in a paddock (or shed if it's made) in a tent is fine. Sick of not being able to get pissy due to having to make it home.
Although, I know not everyone is into getting drunk and talking shit, so maybe the BBQ in a park or at some suckers place would be fine where you have to stay sober to make it home.
My vote's for the paddock.
Mrs KD.
Paul in NZ
25th October 2006, 08:31
There are ways to get pissy and still get home.
The paddock sounds great but catering will be harder and everyone would need to help out. The latrines definately become an issue so a portaloo might be needed as well.
There is a reserve outside Levin (near the dog exercise area) thats very nice - has a toilet block, river etc and is close enough so supplies are not a problem?

Sigh.......
A hangi sounds like a lot of work and I'm not sure any council would be terribly keen on holes or open fires. :dodge:
Thus far there is less initial interest than last year.
It's a very busy time of the year and I'm all for keeping it simple so I vote for a coffee at a cafe some place - I'll post back here when I've had it to let you know what it was like... :second:

I've often thought that Totara Reserve , about half an hour out of Palmie , would be a good place for a barbie type occasion and there are some good roads around the area. There is shit loads of room for bikes and room to camp for those who are keen. And NO I don't organise things :dodge:

Yup - there is like bunk rooms and a communal area. I've been to a couple of bike rallies there. Very good but it would be more of a full on rally situation without the paid for catering facilities. I just would not have time in december.

fairynuff.... I kinda like xmas but I hate the presents side of it. Love the good will, the xmas music, decorations and a day of special feeds and a few drinks with friends and family.
I just threw in an idea to see who is keen. It's no biggie but if people are NOT keen on the idea of a get together I'd like to see that as well or alternate suggestions....
Meh! I'll be having fun regardless - trust me on that....

A Wgtn organised rally could be a great idea.... but not around Xmas - too much other stuff on.
For a Xmas do, we really just all need to get together one night for a bbq/piss-up? Something we bring partners to...(so they can drive us home...)

Rimutaka Forest Park (down the Wainuiomata Coast Rd) could be a good place; likewise many others of the road-ends that trampers use - Holdsworth in the Wararapa, Otaki Forks etc.

Yup sounds good - do they have BBq's there or do we have to haul one? Also - for the more timid, a venue without a gravel rd could be better for m/cycles of the knee scraping variety...
Queen Elizabeth park at either entrance has some good sites.

Rimutaka Forest PArk the weekend of 9th and 10th December. Overnight for those that want it and a month for those that want to come from far and wide to plan how to get there. It's out of the way, there'll be no-one else there, and there can be a Saturday Wairarapa ride beforehand. It'll be easy enough to get a couple of carcasses to burn (food) Upper Hutt is close by (Beer) and there's dunnies for the ladies (I think?)

I'm guessing so but I gave up thinking about this a long time back.....
besides - Mr triumph is back into intensive care for minor alterations - should be better by friday but time has been unkind to me on this project and the desperate need to earn a living is casting a long shadow over the rainbow of my soul....

How about we decide on Saturday and either go to Str8's BBQ or organise something for the 16th or 17th at Sels (if he's still keen).

ps - Hey - I could get lucky - Joe the Clever and Able is doing things I barely understand as we speak. I'm not sure what it is but it involves tooth sucking, grimacing and going oh gawd a fair bit.
All shall be revealed in due course and it will be a tale of heroes (Joe), Evil doers (engine gnomes and parts suppliers), Dragons (best not say), bankrupts (me) and mighty spannering deeds done dirt cheap.... I'm thinking Peter Jackson could be interested in the movie rights... The working title is Tritanic - the Bike

There isnt really a plan at the moment. The events of the last week has sort of put it on the back burner. After the funerals and the get togethers after them I am not sure too many people are still keen.
Perhaps a bbq in the New Year would be better?

That sounds like a good suggestion. MrCSL & I would be keen for that (we're away from the 14th to 19th - next week. YAY!).

But wait, my employer has an Air-Curtain Incinerator. This solves not only the issue around Council restrictions on open fires, but also provides the ability to immolate about 20-times more Poms in about 25% of the time required by the traditional pyre.

Happy to bring da Vogels, this sounds like fun.
If we're having haggis, I'm in, I love the stuff. Depending on numbers are we getting a decent 5kg or 8kg one?
Are we doing it proper with speeches, readings from Robbie Burns and an address to the haggis? I hope some one has a worth dirk to cut it with.
What else can we contribute?

To a Haggis:
by Robert Burns.
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the puddin-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.
The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o' need,
While thro' your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.
His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An' cut you up wi' ready sleight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like ony ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin, rich!
Then, horn for horn, they stretch an' strive:
Deil tak the hindmost! on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve,
Are bent lyke drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
"Bethankit!" 'hums.
Is there that owre his French ragout
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi' perfect sconner,
Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu' view
On sic a dinner?
Poor devil! see him ower his trash,
As feckless as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank, a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit;
Thro' bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!
But mark the Rustic, haggis fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread.
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He'll mak it whissle;
An' legs an' arms, an' heads will sned,
Like taps o' thrissle.
Ye Pow'rs wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu' prayer,
Gie her a haggis!
