Yeast is good! Just look at my avatar!* My "other" hobby is keeping tropical aquaria. We Fish Geeks make a mix of yeast, sugar and warm water to produce CO2, then inject it into the water to make the aquatic plants grow.

Lissa, I think we're at about the same stage of our riding careers. Last night I took delivery of a black 1995 Suzuki Volty (a GN in disguise). I LOVE her!

Make sure you do come to Auckland one day when you're feeling adventurous and we can ride together. Go Club 250!

I just went out and rode it up and down my street. Ooooh it's exciting! :done: My street's nice and quiet but the only way out of it is onto one of Auckland's main arterial roads... and there's NO WAY I'm ready to go out there yet! So little Volty will have to wait until I can persuade someone to take her to a quiet place for me to practise.

Good things take time... :) But practise and take care... and every time you get off the bike you will have a grin on your face... People will be wondering why :-)

The thrill of two wheels, corning is the best part when you pull off a tight turn and you hit the apex perfectly... then power out... and your bike is twitching say yeah lets go... nothing feels like it :-)

However before you start taking the GN to its max corning make sure you are upto it, your tyres are good, the road conditions are good, most importantly learn what the bike can and cant do first... (You will be suprised what it can do using the gears keeping the revs up... but its no sports bike, a good learners commuter) blah blah blah...

as for bigger bike... hmmm getting full licence well help  :scooter: :Punk:

Hey Lissa, I know what you mean about the Ginny being lacking in the power department and wanting a bigger faster beast, but my advice to you is to learn as much as you can from the wee baby before you get your full and move on.
There are times when I wish I still had my wee one so I could practice stuff that I feel uneasy doing on my 900. (Like ever decreasing circles and then doing them faster until you fall off, just to see how much you can do, stoppies (not that the brakes on the GN are probably good enough to do a decent one) and wheelstands (again, GN? Not sure?), get really good at slow manouvering and U-turns etc).
But most of all, have fun and enjoy your bike and learn all you can from it.:Punk:

Yeah, I think that you have a wee way to go before you reach the capacity of that bike M. With the roads that are around Masterton, you just have to get up to speed once and some smooth riding will remove the need to accelerate at all. If you were in a half decent sized town that had traffic lights then yeah...I understand what you meant. :shit:

There has been a few stories/legends around regarding maniacs on GN250's putting Repsols to shame on the Takas (woops I've said too much). Those bikes are capable.

Hey Lissa,
glad your enjoying the bike.Good roads down your way to learn on, if your not to hot on cornering yet you could get yourself out on those long straights and see what the little Ginny can wind out to.
I think this thread is going to go on forever, maybe you could set a record for the number of pages.
Still waiting for my bike to arrive, the ship has been delayed now, bummed out, Dec 5th D day, not too much longer to wait I guess.
Was out riding my road bike, pedalling type, on weekend, up the Maroatotara which is a long twisty climb out the back of Havelock, and I kept imaging what its going to be like when I get on a motorised version, hard to imagine I will be able to go around some of the corners descending any faster on the motorbike than the rd bike, probably slower till I get the hang of it.
Quite a few bikes out and about and I looked at them with a green colour.Still its fun cycling, get my fix that way for now.

I am buying a new bike, a Honda VTR 250, I ordered it on my birthday as a presant to myself but the suppliers had sold out in NZ.I could have hunted around the country to see if there was one avalible in another shop, but I like to get a repore going with a local buisness and support them so I did not bother hunting around. It should have arrived yesterday but with delay its back to countdown, 12 days to go this wait. Its on a ship out there somewhere ! Better enjoy its holiday cause its not going to get one when I get my hands on it.I will be gutted if its delayed any further.
So yu got up to 90k, woo-hoo, bet yu had a bit smile.

COuldn't be happier with my decision, either. The other option was a 2004 Honda VTR250 with only 7500 kms on it. It was a nice bike but went out of my budget range.

The best thing about the GN was I got the new bike and all my gear for less than I would have paid for just the VTR!

Now on my restricted license so I can go 100 without feeling ever so slightly guilty...

As for the gals ride, I will watch this space. May be hard to organise at this crazy time of the year, but if I can get there I will!

Wait until you get your VTR - 90kph - on a VTR 250 you'll barely notice 90kph. I'm not sure but isn't that the single most expensive new 250 on the market?

VTR250 - $8,000
GT250R - $7,500
GPX250 - &7,000
GT250 - $6,200
Scorpio 225 - $4,000
GN250 - $3,400

There's also Cruisers and chook chasers but since I couldn't get comfortable on them I didn't investigate the prices.

My wife wanted (and got) a RG150 coz she thought it looked sweet and cute...it's faster than the VTR.....by an awful lot.

congrats

Nah - a Chook Chaser is a mud bike/farm bike/motard...I found the seating too far forward and upright for my liking. Haven't really thought about scooters for a couple of decades....must borrow one some day.

Well perhaps me and your wife could have a shootout :scooter: someday.Just let me get used to the VTR first.

I decided on the VTR cause I am stuck on it for awhile until I get my full and I wanted a bike I could scoot around the country on without getting frustrated by the lack of power.

The second hand 250's are holding there prices quite well, it does not matter to me if there are faster 150's out there. There are heaps of riders that will be faster than me.I will be into a bit of speed for sure, but will eering on the side of caution to start with.Gotta get some ability happening first. And speed will be relative to the ability, 100ks is going to seem lightingly fast to start with.

You made a good choice - for reliability there's nowt like it without sacrificing horsepower.

The low end torque means less chance of stalling while you learn where the biting point is (or falling off mid corner from choosing the wrong gear!)- the power delivery is very smooth for a 250 and the engine braking is substantial.

It corners very nicely and doesn't weigh too much at all.

Have you tried one yet or are you just going on other people's advice?

My missus RG is supposed to be faster - it's a 2 stroke - as such is expensive to maintain and a bit temperamental.

As you can see from my profile I have a VTR and think it is the best 250 out there (not the fastest - the best - there is a difference)

I guess there is some biasis on your part cause you own one.I am sure I will be happy with my choice, I am so far, proof will be in the pudding as they say.Strange saying that, where did it come from?

I have not ridden one yet, checked out an overpriced 2nd hand VTR, position felt good so I am confident with how its going to feel riding it, unlike some others I looked at.They are nice and light, I have to make the progression from years of riding and racing mountain and road bikes so light is good.I came to my decision that that was what I wanted from asking around, reading up on bike on specs on the internet, also a few bike reviews in mags. There is a new CB250 for about $5g comes out of Brazil, but it will not have the preforance of the VTR.
Now I am HANGING out. They say patience is a virtue.I say virtue can go you know what.
You say the "missus" RG is supposed to be faster, charming phrase men have of refering to there wifes, guess its a term of endearment.Maybe you 2 should have a shootout:sunny:The 2stroke verus the vtwin.

Hi Katwyn,
I am curious to know how someone attached the words, "the truth is in the pudding" to the meaning.Perhaps cause when you put the ingredients together it does not always guarantee success, or the result that we hope for.Strange how these sayings come about.

Still if the pudding does not rise in the oven you can still eat and enjoy, turn it into trifle and smother it with cream, yum, if the bike does not live up to expectations then, ....then what, well its just a bummer.

...Haven't really thought about scooters for a couple of decades....must borrow one some day.

McJim you just gave me traumatising flashbacks...

My chauffeur and I borrowed a scooter a few weeks ago for the Auckland ScooterFest. Funny little yellow Chinese thing - basically a kids' plastic toy with a 49cc motor strapped to it. We're not small people, so according to all who saw it, we looked really really daft.

The thing has a top-box, and by the time the chauffeur got his lanky legs on board there was only about 5cm of seat left between the back of his bum and the top box. Anyone who's seen me would know my backside's not going to fit in a 5cm gap. So we rearranged ourselves so his legs were poking out at about 90 degrees from the sides of the scoot and I was squished in behind him with my legs on just as bizarre an angle.

Of 120 scooters on the scooter run that day, we were 119th up every single hill. Hilarious fun though. :scooter: :sunny:

You say the "missus" RG is supposed to be faster, charming phrase men have of refering to there wifes, guess its a term of endearment.Maybe you 2 should have a shootout:sunny:The 2stroke verus the vtwin.
She likes being the "missus" and I like being the "hubby" 's why we got married in the first place.

Forget the RG for a moment please, what I have been trying to say is "VTR250 Good choice".

And watch out for the bicycle haters on this forum - there's a woman on here that believes cyclists deserve to die just for using the road. No names. You'll find out who she is when the next "Cyclists" thread rears it's ugly head - welcome to the engined fraternity by the way.

It'll be good, of that I am fairly confident. The limiting factor will be this rider not the bike for starters.

Thanks for positive words on the VTR.I am glad to hear from your experiences that they are good bikes.

As for cycle haters, well I have experienced that over the years, cannot really understand why, but its like a lot of prejudices, they are unfounded and come about through ignorance.I know we ride 2 abreast and piss people off, wear bad taste clothing, well not me I like to think, ...yer right! Some of the gear is hideous but the lycra stuff is comfy as and does not need to be completly garish. We are also legit road users same as slow tractors.I know a lot of people think we are pesky road users, hell we may inconvenience them for a few minutes, its not the end of the world.

Maybe I should hate all cars and trucks cause they try to take me out often and throw things at me occasionally. One truck run me off the road and missed me by a millimetre, just recently a truck driver decided to become extremly irate cause I wizzed through an intersection before him I had time to do so.You get to experience some extreme behaviour as a cyclist.Could write a thesis on it if I was a psycology student. Not sure what his problem was, bad day I guess. In an extreme instant a friend had a gun pulled on him a few years back. The cops became involved as you would expect and the guy was caught. He went on to shoot a cop in Gisborne a few years later.

Perhaps the cycle haters should try cycling. Its an awesome feeling to be really fit and challenge yourself.I see it as an experiment on the body to get the best preformance out of it that u can.You would be suprised at the speeds we can travel, its a blast, as well as an adrenalin fix we get a endorphine fix.Its fun to catch a truck and draft behind then. You can sit on 60kph.All adds up to a good day.

Cycling is popular with a wide range of sports people across a lot of disiplines including motorcross, rally, superbikes.Sebastin Loab has not been driving the last few rounds of the world rally after braking his arm in a mountain bike crash.Does she hate those people as well?Sorta bizarre really.

Feel like going for a ride now.

I guess there is some biasis on your part cause you own one.I am sure I will be happy with my choice, I am so far, proof will be in the pudding as they say.You will be happy.

And when it comes time to get a bigger bike, don't sell the little VTR, I regretted selling mine.

I will have to sell my VTR otherwise I'm gonna have to find a bigger bike that only costs $1,000!

(Auckland house prices you see - means I only have $2.50 per week to feed the family or the house gets repossesed)

Well perhaps me and your wife could have a shootout :scooter: someday.Just let me get used to the VTR first.

You will have to practice the fine art of 'trash talk' as well before challenging anyone in future. I mean, that was just too polite. You've got to talk yourself up, humiliate your opponent, and then hope like hell your faster or you will get burnt at the pub.

Take one slim, attractive young bloke. Sit him down on a sofa in front of a TV. Do everything for him for at least 10 years - cook his meals, wash his clothes, clean up after him.

Before you know it you're married to a PUDDING!

The only problem I have with cyclists is the many I see running red lights and generally ignoring the road rules.

Don't have a problem with the ones that stick to the rules but have had some serious abuse from one trying to turn left through a red light when I was on a green and almost hit him

Jeez I know I should read the entire thread but my lunch break ain't THAT long!
Lissa...ignore the negative people, get out there and do it. If you REALLY DO want to get a bike then whats standing in your way?
I was riding trail bikes in my teens, inspired by my male friends who were all totally supportive! Since then my love of bikes has grown and those same male friends are now tied-down family men and jealous of me who has held true to my dream and has been thru numerous bikes since those early days.
I am struggling to pay off a mortgage but there is no way the bike will ever be sacrificed to pay debts.
Its my soul food!

Alice
28th November 2006, 12:04
I am guilty of that as well.I ran a red light late for work one morning and got pulled up by a cop.I had to sit and take his lecture, whistling silently to myself and gazing slightly skyward.Felt like a kid getting told off at school for disobeying the rules.

I can understand how it pisses people off, I am not really guilty of it these days, only occasionally when the road flows the way of the traffic, never at intersections.

Its sorta like you quote, "If you can"t be good, be good at it"

The GN is a good learning and or comuter... but once you start doing the touring and or the serious biking thing, you will find it a bit under-powered. Though keeping your revs up youwill be able to keep up with traffic no problem ;-)

Then again I know somebody that has been happy on his GN for years and he has been around the country... I also know of the less common GN 400 which gives a bit more grunt... and a few people dropping the 400 engine into the 250 frame (as far as I know they are the same size just bored out and a few other things done...)

anyway glad your having fun... :scooter:
