I might look at importing some 250cc bikes and selling them here. Could get a zxr or cbr registered for about 3-4k and sell it for more. Anyone know the laws about this?

New law on cars is that it cant be pre 1999 so i would of thought that would also apply to bikes, but i really dont know. So if someone could answer that itd be good.

Ruins resale blah blah blah. Can't blame the importers, they are only taking advantage of the current laws. And no law has been passed regarding pre 1999 cars. And if they did pass one unless they changed tatics it would only apply to ma class vehicles, ie passenger cars. Currently vans and light trucks are exempt from the frontal impact laws (mostly applying to pre 1996 cars with the odd exception.).

That's the reason we dropped Aprillia. interesting topic...i sold cars for a toyota franchise many moons ago...i remember the huge stink when the jap imports started to arrive in big numbers...one blokes reaction sticks in my mind...he had a GLXI 2.8 cressida which hed paid $46000 for new....when a few years later he was offered $8000 for it from the same toyota franchise that he bought it from his reaction was pretty fiery to say the least...i guess the same thing is going to happen with bikes...

Five years ago the kiwi dollar was worth 0.40 USD. Today it is worth 0.66 USD (and in the last few months has been over 0.70). This means that my 2006 dollars can effectively buy 65% more bike than they could have done five years ago.

If people are upset that their five year old bikes have devalued - they should never have bought in to the market at the bottom of the foreign exchange cycle.

Quality used imports are cheap right now because the NZD is relatively strong. As soon as the dollar falls (and it will) the pricing will cease to be competitive.

...i guess the same thing is going to happen with bikes... Is happening with bikes, people have been importing them for years, I'm one of the guys Lou is talking about, but hey I'm over it now. my mate got a smoking private deal on an 02 Mille R from Japan. It just pisses me off when you see imports in a bike shop for the same price as a NZ new bike, buyer beware I spose :yes:

perhaps euro bikes are overpriced in NZ?
I note that importers like "Emoto" on Tardme dont, in general, import jap brand bikes - stated reason is that the new prices in NZ dont allow the margins.

They bring in plenty of Ducs and Beemers though...
