I have been looking to buy a new bike to replace my 05 VFR800FI done 18000ks. I am not as young as I used to be so I am trying to get away from the cramped up sports bikes. As I am not really enjoying my riding of late. I have had a bike on and of for 40 years. Reading the specs of the new 07 Triumph Tiger, I think it will suit my style of riding from now on. On the road with two factory panniers for just over 20k represents good value for money. BMW I don't like. AS for cruisers, I think you would be better of in a mobility scooter. Is there anyone on the site in the same boat as I? I would like to hear what you have to say on my intended replacement, for my VFR800FI. Is there a better bike on the market in your oppinion? to replace it? If so I would welcome the advice:
cheers all.:scooter:

When you decide, let me know what you're going to flog the VFR off for :D

I turned 59 the week before last and on the Blackbird, I get knee and wrist pain if I do more than about 800 km in a day. It's not so bad that I need to get rid of it yet, but I have turned my thoughts about what to do when the time comes. I'll definitely be going for a more upright riding position but as I'm only 5'8", the Tiger is too tall for me. My leanings are towards the Yamaha FZ1-N or the 2007 Kawasaki Z1000. They both have fantastic performance for real world riding, but offer more comfort for old bones!

Good luck with whatever you decide!

the Tiger is too tall for me.

The 07 Tiger has been redesigned and looks not so tall judging by the pics on the net. Front wheel has come down from 19 to 17 and the seat is different.
Us current Tiger owners bemoan the loss of some of the off road ability (not that many take them off road much) but the new model looks capable enough for gravel roads. And (without actually riding it) I would say it would retain the excellent riding comfort, good even power (love those triples) and and suprising agility (for a bike that size) that the older Tigers have.

Provided you dont have problems with seat height, I would say they are an ideal choice Kieth.

I turned 55 last week (not that age should mean anything) but I can't rate the CB1300 highly enough for all the reasons you state. Have you considered it at all BB?

Yes I have, subject to seat height. I've seen photos of yours and it's a gorgeous bike. My boss has the forerunner, the 1997 CB 1000 "Big One" with all sorts of extras. I've ridden it and it's bloody impressive. Yours must be even more so.

Am 54, had a fazer 1000 (in Uk), and was the best all round bike i`ve had. Not tried the new model though, not intending to cos I might be tempted!!!

Cheers, yep I certainly enjoy it. The words "shovel" and "shit" come to mind!! I'm 6ft4 so no seat height worries for me. In fact I'm more at one with the CB than my old ZX9 cos I used to dwarf that!
I think Boyd Honda were/still are?? selling their ex-demo CB13 (in black) which has a lowered seat on it. Check out pics on TradeMe or M'C Trader.
About $10K I think.

I am not as young as I used to be so I am trying to get away from the cramped up sports bikes.

I chose the Hornet for the sort of reasons you mention. I tried several sprot bikes but they were painful as commuters and a constant temptation to up the pace in the interest of comfort on the open road.

The Hornet is OK for about four hours, after which the shoulders complain a bit. An FJR1300 or an STX might cure that, but then the Whangamomona runs wouldn't be so much fun.

The CB1300 has a couple more horses than the Hornet, much more torque, but weighs shitloads more Kgs. Can't see the point really.

You've got me a bit worried there though... I did want to try a VFR.
But hey! I'm only 62.

Depends what you mean by "better".
If all that you don't like about your VFR is ergonomic-related, then there are things you can do:

Fit Helibars, GenMar risers, Tomaselli clip-ons or whatever to bring the bars up and back a bit.
Fit a double-bubble windscreen to raise the wind blast.
Lower the footpegs by fitting Buell footpeg brackets to the existing ones.
Have the seat customised by MacDonald Motortrimmers to fit your butt.
Add heated grips. All of that should still leave you heaps of shekels from what you will lose by changing bikes.
As for changing bikes, I know that of the VFR owners who haven't gone to something more sporty, the majority seem to have gone for an FZR1 or whatever it's called, or a BMW R1200GS. Very few seem to have gone for the likes of the Kawasaki 1200 or any other sport-touring bikes. If they've wanted a more comfy sport-tourer from Honda, they've opted for the STX1300 or Honda's 2-wheeled car, the Goldwing.

Yes'n'no.
It has excellent ergos: everything seems to be in just the right place. However, the seat does get a bit hard after a while, and if you're tall the pegs are a bit high.

I find mine just right, especially now I've swapped my leather trousers (which were restricting blood flow in my knees) for some better-fitting ones.

Just got a proper look at the new tiger in this months issue of BIKE, it looks damn good the only thing it has in common with the old model is the name, its off road stylings are gone, I reckon triumph will flog alot of them its going to be very appealing for all the reasons that have been brought up here but NOT boring at all. The new daytona will be interesting as well...

Mmmm? Speed Triple? Tuono (if you don't mind felching around with it to make it go like it should)? FZ1? One of the Japanese naked muscle bikes? But the above suggestion to raise the bars a bit might be the perfect solution. Oooh, and I'm sure Big Dave would recommend the Buell Ulyses. What a fabulous excuse to go test riding. Woohoo.

OK, so the riding around here is very different from NZ, but on the highway, I always found my VFR750 very comfortable. I'm 59 (not that you'd know:innocent: ) and 6'3".
Just bought an '02 Speed Triple, and I love it already, so totally diferent to the VFR. However, on the highway, it's no match, you're a bloody sail on it and at 100(mph) it's seriously a pain to hang on. We can cruise at 75, and that is still pretty hard work, I have to say.
I didn't buy it to ride on the highway, mind, but that is a consideration when I need to go three hours north to get some corners. I reckon the Tiger would be a great bike for NZ as a replacement for the VFR, and if it's anything like my Speed Triple, loads of character.
Just my .02c worth.
Cheers
Barry

I'm seriously thinking about a new Tiger. As long as it fangs well. It seems to have everything you need in a bike plus some style. There are optional lower seats available, but the standard one is lower than the old Tiger.
The old Tigers are being specialled now too, around $15995 with bags and heated grips (I think)

If the new Tiger crosses a Speed Triple with the Old Tiger the way I saw in the Buell, then I'll have a very serious look too.

FWIW my next purchase will probably be a cruiser. My Tbird is getting to retirement age and I have really, really enjoyed the Harleys I've had lately.:chase:

Yes, I know what you mean about the looks from the pictures. But I thought that of the new Speed Triple, and in the flesh, it looks brilliant. I expect the new Tiger will too. Triumph have an open house here this coming weekend, so I'll get to see one, and maybe ride it. I sort of don't want to, as it may let me see what I'm missing settling for my '02 Speed Triple :shit:

I have an '03 Tiger which I'm rapped with. From the pics of the '07 I have seen so far, I preferred my model. However, today, while on holiday in Melbourne, I came across an '07. In the 'flesh' it looks fantastic. The one I saw is black like my one too. It's getting rave reviews and just from the looks, I can see why.

The new Tigers are in stock now. We've sold two or three already. They are lower than the 955, I can get both tip toes on the floor. The low seat is 15mm lower again, so should be just right. The sports can gives an extra 10hp, so you're up to ST power. The only thing I don't like is the fat can getting in the way of panniers.

i know what you mean, we had a vfr800 for a little while, and now a blackbird. all good for 200k or so but then the legs get sore around the knees and the bum goes numb then the wrists hurt! (vfr has better bar setup than the bird for touring)
Why do you not want a bmw?

On the passes ride we each had a ride on each other's bikes. All riders came away impressed by the Tiger. I found it was the smoothest engine I have ever found on an adventure bike, and it had performace and handling equal to many sport bikes. A very nice all round machine. :scooter:

On the Sth Island passes ride the Tiger was the one bike I felt instantly at home on on the gravel, with my experience being on dirt bikes and my 650 Transalp. The 995i that was with us had great handling on the gravel and turned in almost as well as the 650's in spite of the extra weight and the 19 cf 21 inch front. The only significant downside for me was that the footpegs were too high which made for a more cramped riding position and alters the way you sit on the seat to a position that would have got uncomfortable for me after a while (we were doing 10-11 hour days, and I'm around 6ft1)

The Tiger was also very economical on fuel using less than the T/A or the V strom

I think its a bloody shame Triumph have neutered the big cat into an tarseal toy with their new model, personally I'd prefer a spoked wheel 955 and I'd get the pegs lowered (raising the seat to the highest position didn't help) but they seem to be like rocking horse shit to find.

Hi Cobber
I bought the 1050 Tiger, It's just as at home on the gravel mate as the older 955 cats are. I did gravel on the 1050 two up down the South Island last Feb. It's as much at home on the gravel as it is on the tar seal mate.

But If you want a new 955i with free hard luggage then get on down to your nearest Triumph showroom and buy one as they are a bargain at $1495+ orc. If you live near Palmerston North Anza have a silver Cat in the showroom.

A word of warning!! Don't take the 07 Tiger 1050 for a test ride mate. Because you won't want to get of it. ;)

07/08 tiger guys. Exhaust, airfilter and airbox mod will give you an extra 20hp (seriously). Get it done!

I have done some mods to my 1050 I put in a k&n air filter, have taken the second bung out of the induction box.

Have a Remus PC on using the baffle at the moment and nice and quiet with a beautiful note!!

I have had the of road race tune loaded up into the bikes computer. Wow over 5000rpm the big cat grows another leg!! I have 124hp at the back wheel.

Have had my rear shock reconditioned, no wallowing and bottoming out now.

I bought the Triumph aftermarket Gel seat, I found the original seat ok but the wife was not comfortable on it. But now we have the Gel seat she is as happy as.

I was pissed of with the default lighting system only the low beam comes on when you turn the key on. I had a couple of very close calls due to the lighting on the Tiger wasn't good enough. So I bought some HID lights with ballast's What a transformation, it has made I clearly stand out in the daylight now. And in the evening when it's as black as. The HID's make it look like it's a summers day they are that bright.

The last thing I have just put on my Cat was a centre stand. It is that well balanced my 10 year old Grand daughters can get it on the CS.

The seat height is a wee bit on the high side but riding 2 up like I do 99% of the time is ok because when I put Mum on the bike sinks a bit. She only goes 60kg though.

A word of warning though don't take one of these big cats for a test ride because you won't want to get of it!!
