View Full Version : The anticipation before a decent ride...

How many other riders actually notice physical symptoms in anticipation of a decent length ride on their bikes?
I’ve only managed to squeeze in about an hour of riding in the last month and have been missing it badly. I’ve negotiated with my wonderful and long-suffering wife that she drives from Tokoroa in the car on her own to Coromandel tomorrow and I’ll ride up straight after work tomorrow evening.
Since it’s all been settled and despite a heavy workload, it’s hard to think of anything else but visualising bolting home from work tomorrow, going through the ritual of kitting up, mentally running through the route, how I’m going to ride it and trying to slip into the “Zen State” as early into the ride as possible. I’m actually getting that stomach-churning feeling of anticipation and elation whilst I’m typing this!
I’m 59, have been riding for nigh on 40 years and still this happens. Am I just an incredibly sad bugger who needs to get a life or do others feel like this too? Wives need not reply :innocent:

The thought of what could pop up during times of anticipation, doesn't require much imagination!
Nonetheless, The thought of another Takaka run certainly gets the blood circulatiing...

Wrong sort of ride and it's not called anticipation, it's called begging:angry:

Physical symptoms for me are an understatement Geoff, you may well recall the days leading up to my new bike, I was a physical wreck, losing sleep, appetite shot, chain smoking, I tell you the tension was unbelievable. Then the day came, up at 5.30 for a 10.00am test ride, what a relief to get that overwith.
Since then I have a somewhat milder version before a ride but its still there and it goes just as quickly once I get underway. Perhaps half the joy of riding is that build up and release, so to speak...

Absolutely...I get an enormous amount of pleasure from riding. Whether it be into Welly on a daily commute or, say, down to the inlaws in Christchurch. The anticipation (read excitement) kicks in well before the ride. It's a bit like needing a fix in so much that if the weather is crap for example I feel frustrated and let down. Indeed I too am sitting here at home typing this and it's got me thinking "why am I not out on the bike?" I pour over maps before a long ride too...and sometimes afterwards - to look see where I went. I can even picture a particular stretch of road that Ive ridden just by looking at the map. Its simply called the biking bug and it bites at you whatever you are doing. I NEVER get the same feelings about car journeys. Like I've said in earlier threads, I'll go into the garage and just stare at the bike! (or in my case clean it again!). Or at least tinker in some way or another. If we go out for a scratch of a weekend. I'll sit and admire it when we stop for a break. I spend far too long on here for example...another symptom. But long haul touring trips are my fave...God I'm so anal. I once planned a route through France on backroads to a holiday destination. I spent friggin hours pouring over Michelin maps and logging the itinerary to the minutest detail. I printed out the route directions, including mileage so that I could read it from the map holder
on my tank bag and ride the route without needing to map read. When I got there, my trip meter was about 1km out!
But doing all that preparation beforehand just added to the anticipation. It was great... and it still is. No you don't need to get a life. You've got a bloody good one like the rest of us like-minded sad old gits!

I'm planning an overnight trip this weekend and I'm finding that it's occupying more and more of my mental down-time.
I'm going to be tied up assisting with the running of a rally the following week so tonights Pie & Pint and the overnighter will be it for a coupla weeks. In that case I guess we will be in for fantastic weather over the next fortnight

Why can't us wives reply?? I get butterflys in anticipation of a big(ish) ride too!
We're going through to Dorkland later in the month for the U2 concert and the thought makes me tingle in anticipation and I could really go a smoke, but as I've quit, I guess I won't be getting through half a pack the morning of departure. It'll be the longest trip I have undertaken on my own bike, so am looking forward to not having to sit behind lines of traffic!:scooter:

This is a trick question right?
You seem to suggest that this is not normal!
I have also been riding many years and I still love the feeling of anticipation of a good ride, even if it is a short one, and the planning of a tour...well  :Punk: :sunny:
I have recently spent 7 months off my bike due to injury, and I reckon I must have gone a bit mad.
Just been able to get back on recently for some short hops but can't describe the feeling of being back on the bike.

didn`t see my bike for 6 weeks - stuck in a container from the UK - but when I got the call to collect it from the docks, got all excited. When I saw it the shed I was all to eager to get the battery connected, shoved the plastics and windsceen in the car, and enjoyed every one of the 15 minutes ride home.

Yeah mate, I used to sit up late at night keeping the missis awake, then wake up early check the bike over all morning then head out.
I'd get home and all I'd want to do is discuss the ride and every little thing that happened!! My wife got so sick of it she decleared the lounge a 'motorbike free' zone... that was untill she started riding herself, now she can't shut up about it.... and she can't believe what a bitch she was for not wanting to listen to my stories!!

When I first started riding I was scared S***less getting reeady for a ride,
I had heaps of anxiety, butterflys and all that for these reasons
Now I ride everyday (to work and back) and i'm in an excited state of
anticipation to get on the R6 and ride home....and days like this
as well (20 degrees hot).....it can't get much better than this!

It doesn't have to be in anticipation of a long ride that does it. Just a short ride will get me excited. In fact just cleaning or working on the bike gives me a cheesey grin. Yesterday was a beautiful day. A bit cold but clear and bright. Unfortunately I had to wait in for some carpet fitters who eventually turnred up too late for me to go out. I got the bike out with the intension of giving it the once over but sat and looked at it for ages with that feeling of anticipation.

Whooo hooo hooo haaa! I know what you all mean - I love every moment before I get on my bike, feel like a knight of old or pony express rider about to go off for some adventure! Maintenance and cleaning isn't a chore for me like it is on the old cage, when I'm working on the bike - I'm thinking of far off places where I want to ride, will ride and plan to ride!
Often, the spirit of biking just makes me do odd and spontaneous things - taking trips out to places I've never been or wondered about when I was in the cage. Now, I just head down those roads I "never had time for". Whenever I see another biker on the road I wonder where they've been - doubly so when their bike's packed with trip gear.
Bought the Motorcycle map of NZ...so many destinations and places that I need to travel down! I just love putting the km's under the tyres and riding alone or in a group gives me that thrill! Wet, windy, sunny or night - any time, anywhere and any excuse for a ride! :woohoo:
So, you're not alone! :niceone: :msn-wink:

Tonight some friends are coming up on their "new" '96 1200 Bandit S and my Missus has just got some gear for her first ride on the back of my bike! I've been back biking for 3 years now, but she hasn't shown interest in getting back on 'till the aforementioned friends bought their bike to return to biking!
So it's all on for tomorrow. I haven't pillioned my wife since a brief ride in '97, but not really since '76, so it's gonna be an interesting day tomorrow! Her pants and gloves arrived this morning, (Thanks, QUASiMOTO for a great deal), and her helmet and jacket are coming up with our friends.
Yep, full of anticipation we are!!!!

Hey Jon
Started off with the intent of taking it easy but there was so little traffic that upping the pace was a natural thing to do. 194 km, 1hr 58 minutes and you know the roads! Whilst it was a fast ride, it was also one which required relatively little effort because I was so relaxed. Not quite "Zen state" riding but pretty darned close. Aren't we priveliged to be riding in such a great country?
The return trip on Sunday arvo was 15-20 mins slower due to boats being towed behind 4x4's on the coast road. If any of them were being driven by burly guys with moustaches, you could guarantee that they'd try and block you from overtaking - must be some sort of natural law:shutup:
Any ride is a good ride though.
Cheers
Geoff

Yeah, the far North has some great roads for bikes! No HP's for miles and little traffic. You should try the Waipoua forest road, stopping to see Tane Mahuta on the way to Dargaville. There're the Kaiwi Lakes, Bayley's Beach, etc. so much for a change of scene!

Did the Mangamukas and Waipoua forest road at 2 a.m on one of the Grand Challenge 1000 milers. Seriously scary at that time of the morning with old tree fern fronds laying on the road and various forms of animal life running about! Must try it in daytime at a leisurely pace!

Anticipation, excitement, nerves whatever you want to call it: is a perfectly normal phenomenan when you really enjoy doing something. I really look forward to a ride anytime and it was the same when I used to go hunting a lot. Sleeplessness, mentally going over things etc, all part of the process and when you go without, yeah, you'll get a little tetchy. It's called cold turkey because of addiction. :)
I also have the problem of going down to the garage and just eyeing up my black beauty sitting in the corner. This seems to be a common occurrence and yet another side effect of enjoyment of one's pursuits. I used to play with my hunting rifles and check them over every now again too but since I got back into motorcycling, they have taken a back seat.
