I got a XR100 for my wife so she can have a crack at riding (she is keen as) but there is no where to take here to have a go. I'm on the shore and somewhere like a school or a park would be ideal, but where? If I put her on a surface that is a little bit too hard she will probably not want to get back on the bike again.

Any ideas?:scooter:

try Karioitahi Beach, just south of Waiuku, middle section of the beach is usually coned off by the lifeguards on busy days to protect swimmers/bathers/etc but there plenty of beach either side to ride, even some sand tracks further south towards the waikato river mouth, very scenic as well, bit of a bonus

I took my wife to Woodhill to learn, nice & soft if she falls off, plus the beach is close by to ride down. She loved it... try that?

just take her to that albany place dude... heaps of area for her to learn on... if the guards turn up, just let them know that your just teaching your wife how to ride and hopfully they'll leave you alone :)

I'd strongly suggest going to the Albany area over a beach enviroment. While it is soft ground with a lot of open space IMO its much harder to learn on, much easier to lose traction and if you go over the ruts or through soft sand the front wheel tends to wonder all over the place. The sand is a situation where you need a wack of speed on to be in control which your partner might not have initially and i understand that a bad experience on the first outing can put people off for life (i know this because my partner wont touch a bike now). Maybe the beach is a better thing to do after the 3rd or 4th ride.

I remember my first time on the beach quite a long time ago now :P, after doing possibly 150 hours of farm activities was quite a shock and very unsettling getting used to it.

I know if she has a bad experience on teh first go she won't get back on. She freaks out watching me, so I want an easy start.

I learnt to ride in a gravel car park, quite deep gravel at that. my knees learnt the hard way about riding a motorcycle. but was worth it in the end.

Take her to murawai if you can start at the beach by the 4wd access then progress to the kids area at the Woodhill bike park my mrs has just progresed to the main trails at woodhill and she started on the beach. If you can ride in sand you can pretty much ride in anything and its a bit of a softer landing and more forgiving on the bike if she drops it.

beach wouldnt be bad if you are on hard sand... Yes, soft sand is bad, but down lower?? No problem!

Take her to the bike park.
In the trees is the best place to learn.
If she gets out of control she won't have had too much time to build up speed before she hits something. It's also harder to get target fixation with so many to choose from.
