No easy way of saying this but we have been advised one of our colorful members had an off this afternoon riding his Honda 2 stroke MX bike on the beach.
When we turned up for the Pie n Pint ride tonight Craig from Energy Honda advised us he had just had a phone call from Mrs Inline to say John wouldn't be on the ride tonight but was flying to Burwood as he had hurt his back.
Here's hoping all will be OK and our thoughts go out to him and family for a speedy return to full health.
Not too sure how serious things are so please no insensitive posts or critisisms.

Nasty! Haven't broken mine so far, but know what a bad back injury can be! If he's in a medically induced coma it's not good, though doesn't mean he's permanently crippled. They're being very cautious and Burwood is about the best place he could be. Hope he comes out of it okay. Sympathies to him and family.

From Mrs In-line Four
For everybody who has sent messages - thank you - we really are grateful for all your kind (and otherwise words)
Inline Four was doing what he loved best yesterday morning - racing along the beach at Oakura doing Mach 2 (well 60-70kms) on his new Motorcross bike. He hit a rock under the sand (again!!! having not learned from his trip to Kaitaia) and somersaulted over the handlebars landing on the back of his head with his body following. Imagine a balloon between two bricks and that is what happened to his spine. This is what happened to his T5,6 &7 and the shards from his T6 sliced straight through his spinal cord.
He got a ride on the TET helicopter and then from ICU we both flew down to ChCh General on the Flying Doctor service. He had to be immobilised to prevent further injury. In the next week or so once he is physically stable and his ribs have healed he has to have an operation on his spine to put in plates and wires etc to make sure that when he learns to sit up his back will not collapse further
Inline four did not lose consciousness and has no head injuries but he is paralysed and will be in Burwood until at least Easter next year. So all you kiwibikers in Chch it would be great if you can make contact with him over the coming months as I have to go back up to work on Monday and will only be able to get down every two-three weeks.
We have a long road ahead of us and I am sure once he is upright again he will be back online again. So in the mean time keep sending your messages and I will get them all to him or send him cards, notes etc to the hospital. If you want to make contact and don't know his name it is John Sandford
Once again keep in touch it will mean a lot to him. mrs Inline Four

I'm horrified to hear that and can only wish you and him all the best. I will do my best to get down there before Christmas.

Thoracic spine or the middle bit. Neck is cervical, lower back is lumbar.

Thanks for all your thoughts and messages - i will pass them onto John tomorrow - he is basically paralysed from the top of his beer gut down. It is nice to know that so many of you think so much of him - I certainly do. He has been my rock for the last 3 years and I can't imagine my life without him. So I am not going too. Whatever happens I will be there with him and together we will get through this. If anyone wants to talk to him the phone number is 03 364 0640 and either ask for him by name or currently he is on ext 89319 - this phone is in his room and he has a nurse there most of the time - is in a side room - the days and nights are long when you are flat on your back and can't move - he would love to hear from you guys and girls

From experience I know that hospital is a bloody boring place, so I guess it's up to the Chch KB'ers to make sure you have someone to talk shit with on a regular basis. I guess you'll be kept fairly busy with rehab etc- you are in the best place, it's just a bugger it's got to be so far from home.

As it hasn't been specifically suggested yet, I am willing to put together a 'care package' for John to be sent down THIS FRIDAY 10/11/06.
Anyone in the Auckland region who has something they want to send, think about it carefully. We don't want to overload either John or the staff, I have spoken to him this morning and suggested 'audio books', he was keen on the idea. He cannot handle holding books and magazines at present so this seemed like a good solution. He said he likes historical, science fiction, fantasy, novels etc.
If anyone has any other ideas, bring it on.
PM me for details of address, lets make it happen.

I've had some big tumbles off road, and most who have been off road have too.But sometimes I think about it,and realise how close to a real serious injury I was....tiz luck, and sometimes we have used today's offered amount.I hope all goes well with the speedy recovery John, and remember to stay positive, the mind is your most powerful healing tool.

John and I just want to say thanks so much for all your best wishes, offers of help, money etc - you are just all so great
John had a rough night last night and his temperature went through the roof so he has an infection somewhere which they need to treat.
he is probably going to theatre next Friday and then he will start to be able to move a bit more. He did a damn good job of stuffing his back and his spine is just so out of place.
his biggest worry at the moment is that he will get booted off kiwi biker for not having a bike any longer. He doesn't want to EVER ride again even on a trike.
He enjoyed the calls he got today and they really brightened up his day - thanks guys

John has got his laptop down here - speedygirl is doing a great job of looking after me and she will pass on his laptop to him as soon as he is able to use it again - at the moment all he gets to look at is the ceiling.
it's just so hard to take it all in at the moment. A week ago I was busy planning our wedding next year and now it is all on hold until he is up and about again. I am just so scared that he will try and get rid of me from his life trying to do the right thing and thinking that he is a burden. but how could he ever be - he is the same in life as on this site. bloody minded and everythings always black or white - no grey in his life.
We are just so grateful to have so many of you out there thinking of us
love and best wishes to everyone who has made contact - john is going to need your support over the coming months as i am just one person and even giving him my 100% is not enough
God bless you all

some ppl have funny idea's bout being burdens etc .. when you still love them for themselves, not for what they can do or not do ... & just ask john if it ever comes up .. would he love you any less if you was in his situation ? then tell him to stop being selfish LOL .. & if that dunna work i am sure we can arrange a 4x2 whack on the head to knock some sense into him. :innocent:
I know several couples who have been where you are .... one moment in time & life as they knew it changed forever ..
just wondering if there is a support group that you can hook into as you go through the new paths in your lives .. make enquiries if you can to see if there are ppl you can talk to who have been through it .. It may help with questions that are bound to crop up once the initial stress of the next few weeks wears off
& keep planning that wedding hon .. just think john can't escape that easy anymore ;)

Hi Donna.
You dont know me neither does John, but hopefully what I say might be able to help.
Being part of the Emergency service we have been made aware of Critical incident stress , and the situations that can lead to this.
Something I have learnt is that it doesnt just apply to us in the emergency services, it can affect anybody involved in a stressfull situation such as yours.
I`m not saying that you must go and get help in fact its not about someone telling you what you should do, instead all i can say is that from what I`ve seen here in these posts is that there is an awfully lot of people that care about others so you should have no Problems finding someone to talk to.
Like everyone else has said , Feel free to PM me if you want to talk.I Know people that can help and will contact them if you want tho Know more.
Cheers and all the Best to you And John.
I also Had a friend that lost an Arm due to a M/cycle accident, and have experienced first hand the Stress and pain the family goes through not to mention the Patient as well.

Crikey - I was gunna send you a PM but I'm old and cant figure out who is posting from whos log in any more but...
WHEN IL4 wants to use a PC - PM me an I'll see what I can do. I can get an LCD screen and maybe rig it to a stand so he can see it or something? I usually have a spare keyboard or can rig a wireless thing or something?? Stuffed if I know but I have access to some technology and a team of techs in ChCh plus all the clever ChCh KBrs...
Whatever we can do eh?
Look - it's early and this is a BIG thing. Its going to take more than a couple of weeks to sort through. Don't make rash decisions until everything settles and no thoughts about KB other than belonging to this community for a long time eh?
This is a crappy hand Johns been dealt but how you play the game is whats important. Again, when it comes time to draw another card, let us know and somehow, we will help OK.....

There are always times when I haven't been on KB for a couple of days that I wonder what I will find out. Today was one of those days. I always hate it when folks I know get hurt. Or worse. A mixture of total powerlessness and a reminder of our own fragility.
Our thoughts are with you and yours, John.

Yeah. What Hitcher said. I login after a couple of days and find this sad news.
I live about 1 km from the hospital so if I can help anyone from out of town who comes to visit John (phone, coffee, food, bike parking ... could probably arrange a couple of bunk beds too if need be), just yell.

john has been not so great today - having problems with his breathing and has had to have a special mask on today to help him breathe better. He has his i-river, his PSP and his laptop down here - speedygirl is minding them until he gets out of ICU and can start using them. It will be a few weeks before he can use the laptop because he has to lie flat because of his fractured ribs and scapula(shoulder blade). He gets turned every 3 hours from his back to his right side so is able to watch movies. ICU have a good amount for him to watch. For anyone visiting him when he gets to Burwood (I will let you all know when that happens) who wants to know what to take - he loves grapes, blue powerade, bananas and watermelon, rockmelon etc. thank you so much for all your kind words - i pass them onto John and he is over whelmed by the effect he has had on others lives, and that he is so missed in the chatrooms. I will go and see Public Trust on Tuesday and then let you all know about how to make donations. I will get it set up for John with his boy Brett (aged 6) as next-of-kin on it as I can still work and support us.
God bless you all Donna

love and best wishes to everyone who has made contact - john is going to need your support over the coming months as i am just one person and even giving him my 100% is not enough
God bless you all
Donna, with the greatest of respect; that is enough. Even for him.
As for the support of those here who care for him, even if we haven't met him, it is IMO, a given.
KB is an online community that in many ways is closer than a physical community. We all share a passion for the same thing, despite our differences. When one of our community suffers a loss, we share that. When one of our number needs support we provide it as best we can, knowing that it will be returned if ever we should be in need ourselves. That is what real communities do.
I wish you and John the best of strength, patience, and fortitude for the coming time.

Mack

It's a long road. Take your time. You're lucky to have the support of a good woman. So many don't.
Whether you ride again or not is entirely up to you. But you'll always be a motorcyclist. If you do ever decide to ride again check out Dreamfit, an Australian company that specialise in Recreation products for paralysed people, and especially in motorcycle conversions for T6 paraplegics.

Rang and spoke to John briefly a few minutes ago. Poor bugger sounded shattered, so I only spoke to him for a minute or two to pass on our thoughts and best wishes, and a quick chat about entertainment options for him. He said hes finding it too tiring to watch movies, but that audiobooks are great.
I have a few at home in MP3 format that I'm going to send down to Speedygrl to pass onto him, if any of you have others i'm sure he'd appreciate them being sent down too.
I cant remember all of what I have at home, but from memory I have War of the Worlds, some/all of LOTR, and some of the Harry Potters. I'll post a more comprehensive list later on.

That was awesome to read........ and it can be done....
I actually thought about a trike with a modified seat that can swing around and then be locked into postition once John was on board... and the wheelchair could be fitted onto the back of the trike so that when he stops he can get back into his wheelchair. Also modified hand gears to work the brakes and gears etc.
But at the end of the day it is up to John as to what he wishes to do.....
but then we are talking some time down the track for this to happen.

There was a link posted to a US thread a couple of years ago by an American rider who was paralysed in a motorcycle accident and his getting back on a bike with the help of a Californian company which make a very similar bike.
The way it works is the wheels are retractable and come down at 5mph so they come down at lights and retract back up when leaving. The guy had a lot of courage and zest, and the thread was an amazing read.
The one who really impressed me though she didn't post herself in the thread, was his wife. Here's the woman who's (you could say) had all the emotional strain of his accident, survival, rehab, life change, etc. You could justifiably expect her to loath motorcycles, and yet here she was continuing to support her husband and his desires.
A very brave strong woman. I'll see if I can dredge up the link again.
As for audio books (mp3's) I have from memory...
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman. Very good.
Starship Troopers
Animal Farm
Most of Philip K Dick's works
If someone can post a link of authors John likes I'll source what I can for him.

He is having his operation tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at around 8amish...
He said it would be a approx 4 hours operation.
This operation is to make it possible for John to be able to sit up properly in his wheelchair etc.... they are putting in pins or plates into his spine.
This is a big operation and a huge hurdle for John to get throu.

Hi it's Donna finally using her kiwibiker membership that Mr Inline Four did for me months ago but then never gave me my password
Sorry I haven't been in contact for a few days but I have been busy sorting out everything up here. I had to drive to Paraparaumu today to drop off the Rat Bike that John had done up and sold on Trade Me. I still need to go and pick up his motocross bike yet - that I am not looking forward to doing!!!!
John is currently under heavy sedation following his op which went well - he is still ventilated at the moment but they hope to take it out tomorrow and then let him slowly wake up
His back has now been successfully pinned in place, so he will be shifted to the Trauma Unit at Chch Hospital in the next couple of days and then out to Burwood. I am coming back down next Monday to be with him for a few days before I go back to work
In the coming weeks/months I will have to sell all his motorbike gear and the road legal bikes including mine so will post on site in the hope that someone out there may want them
I am going to the Bank tomorrow to organise a savings account to put any donations in - to set up a trust fund costs too much in legal fees etc. You can be sure that any donations would not be abused and I would put them towards getting Mr Inline 4 mobile again - such as a van or motorised wheelchair
Once again thank you all so much for all the kind thoughts and words - John will get the chance to read all this as soon as he gets to sit upright and use it again. I have been telling him what people say

I'll give Johna call when he gets to Burwood and have a chat.
Look after yourself. It's really important that you do. It's easy to run yourself into the ground at the moment, so don't be afraid to take a breather from time to time.

Forgot to mention also that Mr Inline 4 would definetely prefer Harry Potter to porn - there was a thread not that long ago in which he expressed his beliefs that KB was for serious motorbike enthusiasts and not for "dicks interested in porn". When you are confined to the one place any sort of entertainment has its value (except porn) - he will be so grateful for anything he receives even if it is just a card or phonecall saying hi.
I am looking after myself too - have invites to dinner every night this week which is good because I cannot be bothered cooking with my carnivore here to enjoy it with me.
Something to smile at: the other night when John was high as a kite on Morphine and other pain meds he kept talking in an American accent - southern drawl if you can believe that! When the nurse told him that he could just speak normally and she didn't need the accent he turned around and said to her "Ma-am I'm afraid I can't do that" in his american accent.
He doesn't have a brain injury and still retains all his character - as someone said - he's lovely in person but bloody pigheaded when he gets an idea in his head and he rushes in like a bull in a china shop.

Yep Inline is still 'Online'..............we love the person most eh and I guess as we get older the body gets older anyway and what is inside is what counts so I guess this is the case with John...........
You may or not know my circumstances but I do not think of my Daughter being disabled because in a funny way this does not become important anymore and I guess for Natalie her disability is a minor issue and what is more important to her are cuddles, her rabbit etc.....well hopefully this makes sense because it is not how we feel ie self pity that is important.

I'm sad to hear of the accident, I can't think of much else that could change your lives so much. I hope you both get through it all okay. All the best.

The Bible-thumpers latched onto the "foetus" myth for their own perverse ends. What researchers want are embryonic stem cells. They can extract these from placental blood rather than having to source these from foetuses.
Hasn't old G Dubeyer B been refusing to sign off on this or similar. Maybe things could be looking a bit brighter on this subject now that he's a lame duck..

MODERATOR Note
Two complaints re this thread, please keep it on track, this is not a argument about Stem Cell rights or wrongs, also possibly not appropriate on a thread containing supporting messages for IL4 and Donna.
Will be infracting for off topics here on in.

Donna, glad to hear that the op went to plan and thanks for keeping us all informed.
As others have said, you need to look after yourself too... IL4 has all the best care and you need to ensure that you do too, in preparation for the time that he will be relying on you to be his supporting pillar.
Be strong and take care and all our love and blessings to you both!

Hey Donna. Thanks for the updates.
As I mentioned in the other thread, Mrs Oakie and I live about 1km from the hospital so if there's any practical help we can provide, just yell.
Our thoughts are with you both

I have been away for a a while and have just caught up with this news!
IL4 you are in the best place.
Even though we have never met (like most of the KB's on here) it feels as though you are a good friend, so we will certainly pop in on our ride around NZ for a visit wherever you are in February next year.
All the very best on your road to recovery

Concur with all the supportive posts, here, and glad the op went well. CAn you tell us anything about a prognosis as yet, or is it too soon for the surgeon to give one?
