Why was I NOT informed?

This road is AWESOME!!

Rode from Wellington to Mokau on Saturday, great weather all the way. Got to see Mt Taranaki devoid of cloud.

But yeah, the highlight was New Plymouth to Mokau, what a cool road. Great scenery, a few good corners. Would have loveeeddddd to have been on the RVF400 solo coming over the Mt Messenger bit, could have really thrashed the shit out of the little bugger on that road. Was still heaps of fun on the 750 with pillion though. Saw plenty of bikes on the road, so obviously the locals like it too.

Sunday came back to Wellington from Mokau via Taupo, called in the trackday, looked like a good time was had by all (Except for those who crashed.. (And I sorta rode back to Wellington with one of them, and he wasn't too upset)).

Hurrah for weekends with good motorcycle weather (I like a spot of gentle rain) and great roads!

I love that road. I started driving it as a 16-year-old, when (usually) my Mum and I used to drive to Hamilton and back each month to see the then only skin specialist in the North Island outside of Auckland or Wellington. In those days my folks had an XA Falcon. We could do Mum & Dad's farm (about halfway between Eltham and Stratford) to downtown Hamilton in three hours flat. One hour to Mokau, two hours to the Waitomo Caves corner, three to Hamilton. And that was before the Awakino Gorge was straightened up. When I was a seventh former, my Grandpa bought a Triumph Dolomite Sprint. One day he suggested giving Mum the day off and he let me drive him and his new wheels to Hamilton and back. Whoar! 2 hours 40 minutes return. Lovely licorice overdrive. Apart from the colour (chocolate brown), I loved that Dolly.

Driven it many times in a car-usually carsick in the back of Dad's 60 Belair Chev, as a kid. Not a problem now that i am grown up and get to sit in the front.
Will be doing it for the first time on two wheels this Christmas - can't wait!!

It's even greater on a bike. I find it a deeply spiritual experience. Even with my earplugs in I can hear my tupuna calling me home...

I simply had no idea what it was like. I have not been that way since I was maybe 10 years old. I remember stopping at the Methanex plant, not much else.

I rate it with East Cape.

Nice to see you at Bulls and again at Trackday....you must have done a few miles! How did your pillion find it on the back for that long?

Nice to see you at Bulls and again at Trackday....you must have done a few miles!Yeah, I keep forgetting to look at the odo, I knew what it said on Saturday morning though. It has two trip meters, I should have used both, one for fuel, one for the whole trip.
How did your pillion find it on the back for that long?Fine, the blinky fuel light comes was coming on at 200km, so we have to stop often anyway. What kills us both is straight roads, lucky that was only the blasted straights out of Wellington anyway. No movement equals pain. I was getting great economy out of it, I can make the blinky fuel light come on after 165km in normal (Read, the 'rapa and the hill) circumstances. I have not explored the depths of the 'i'm not blinking anymore, I'm on solid now because I'm getting really thirsty' fuel light yet.

go off main road south of hawera to patea, turn left at ball rd follow signs to end of road and you are at patea damsite,on way back have a beer at alton tavern, lots of hills and turns.also any road up to either dawson falls or stratford mountain house on a fine winters day you get brilliant views with snow filled peaks of central plateau.
