Replacing clip-ons.

Got me some flash new clipons from motostyle (http://www.motostyle.co.nz) but I cant figure out how to get this strange nut off the top of my clamps, I am guessing you need a special tool to get it off. Or is it just easier to drop the forks out?

So that looks like your centre stem fitting.

If the clips ons don't just clip on and need to be slidden off the forks why not just loosen the fork clamp bolts and drop the forks down enough to get the clip ons off without undoing the centre of the top triple clamp? The alternative you mention.

I reckon that's best anyway because then you aren't upsetting the steering head bearing mounts or anything like that.

Will that work on your bike?

Otherwise you will need a tool that fits. Won't a large hex socket or a spanner go over it or is it some strange size? Big Crescent spanner - just watch you don't scratch the top of the triple clamp?

drop the forks out....or wait till you crash next time and one or both break...they'll be handy as spares...


other wise if your insistant...drop the forks out...or get someone else to do it for you...a 12 pack should see the job done by most halfwits

Can you put a box under the belly of the bike without damaging anything and hold it up a bit as you don't have to take the forks out, just slide them down enough to get the clip ons off (sounds like a misnomer if they don't actually clip on - should call them slide ons eh!). Do one at a time as you can usually compress the spring enough - if not just take the fork cap off too and let the spring rise up. Another option is use a tie down or similar and tie it to the roof of your garage. You could do that if you leave the top triple clamp in place just tie the bike round the steering head under the triple clamp and swing it from the ceiling.

ummmm... why do you think you need a special tool ??

I went and bought a big Hex socket 35 or 36mm from memory. You need a long handle on the socket to get a decent amount of leverage. Then you should be able to lift the yoke off the forks. Sometimes the clip-ons have a locating bolt on the yoke which you need to undo.

Also you need a torque wrench to tighten it properly to spec. (or guess :gob: )

Also undoing the yoke only won't come anywhere near the steering head bearing which makes it less complicated.

That is the same as a GSXR1000,a normal 12 point socket fits it.
Undo and remove that nut......Remove the 6 mm bolts from the clip on to the upper triple clamp if it has those... Loosen the clip on clamp bolts...Loosen the triple clamp outer bolts.....You should be able to lift the triple clamp off the fork legs and stem enough to remove the old clip on's and fit the new ones...Remove the switchs/throttle etc from the old clip ons...Reverse of removal torqing the fasteners...Sometimes it is easier to put the front wheel up against a wall so you can push the bike forward a little to get the triple clamp started.

You have to be careful with late USD forks if you have those.
Over torque the clamps and the tubes can crush.Even laying a bike down can distort the tube when the clip on hits the deck.

nah....car jack under the front headers....lift up peice of piss...I done it heaps...and have no front stand...

The one you really need to worry about is the big one on top. Find an online manual and check. For my kawa it's 78 NM.
