View Full Version : Winter hibernation?

Well it's a sad fact that people seem to be succumbing to winter and spending their $$ on new cars. At least four Wgtn Thur. night bike fellas have gone down that dark road. Yeah - comfort's all good (music, circulation in fingers, and being able to move on arrival), but how many of you are still enduring this winter only on the bike?
Disclaimer: I know there are 'legitimate' reasons for cars - kids, work, etc...
Counter-disclaimer: Is the fact that it's in winter just a coincidence though?

Well I ride all year round - but the bike will stay in the garage if I feel the weather is dangerous - or potentially dangerous for riding.

My Winter weather kit is good stuff (thermo-alloy lined etc) and I back off compared to how I ride in warmer, dryer months, taking it smooth and easy...

But any threat of snow, or if it is looking really bad out there, then the bike stays dry and warm in its garage. Fortunately, I've not been caught out with it starting to snow when I am at work for many years now... hopefully it won't happen either!

I'm enduring our summer. Might as well be winter here for all the sun we are getting

I ride all year round simply because I couldn't face the car or train. The GS is ideal in any weather (I'm not biased  ) and with heated grips and jacket I can survive pretty much anything. Although if there's snow on the ground (2 days last winter) the bike stays at home.

I`m out all year round in all conditions.winter riding`s o.k. if you`re careful and you`ll learn loads about breaking, clutch control and throttle control on slippery roads. My biggest fear in winter is the dickhead car-drivers who drive on icy roads the same as they do in summer. If they hurt themselves well basically that`s their own fault but they tend to take out the innocent with them.

I'll continue riding throughout winter, especially commuting because of the amount of time saved through the heavy traffic. I have good winter gear, and if I find it too cold I'll just buy warmer gear. Snow and ice isn't a problem in Auckland during winter, but I'll obviously adjust my riding to the road conditions, etc.

I feel for you guys in other countries where winter is extreme...generally in winter over here (more North Is.) we still get a share of sunny days so I trust the KB rides will continue throughout the fine weekends!

Yeah pretty much the same, I don't live in Ak, but weather is pretty much the same in the north Waikato, still ride all year round.

Upper Hutt is completely white this morning, and pretty cold too when I went out to the woodshed to get more wood.

They are predicting up to ten degrees of frost this week, but if I had my bike up and going I would still be out there.

And hopefully will be in about ten days...

I ride no matter what...mostly b/c it's my only means of transport. I am gonna have to invest in some additional winter clothing though - including handle bar warmers!

The major problem I seem to be having at the moment is my visor completely fogging up in the cold & so I have to ride around town with my visor up...that's a little breezy! Do any of your know a cheap way to prevent this? I

Mags here reckon that a cheap cure is to"polish" the inside with washing up liquid, never tried it myself though.
Heated grips are brilliant, cold hands are uncomfortable and dangerous. If you dont mind looking a bit silly(on a road bike) during the winter months off-road hand-guards help a lot more than you`d think, without the wind-chill your hands wont get so cold.

Off road red hand guards wouldnt look all that silly on a CB250RS...mount them off the headlight bolts or the indicators, and you'd be away laughing :)

Winter? What winter? Brilliant day in Auckland. Spent the morning pottering around the garden, got my hedge 3/4 cut then evil thoughts got the better of me and I was off for a ride. Blue sky, warm sun, cool breeze - absolute bliss. Looks like more of the same for tomorrow (Coromandel loop, yay :ride: )
In the meantime it's off to the :apumpin: followed by a sauna and spa, then home for :apint: , a nice home-cooked roast chicken dinner, and who knows...
Does life get any better than this?

Meanwhile, back in Pomgolia, they seem to be having the real winter...

Still a bit nippy on the half hour ride along scenic drive to work this morning at about 8.... And a chilly SE breeze blowing...

Not bad for winter though huh?

And the breeze is supposed to lessen tomorrow too :)

I got a Pro-grip anti fog for my visor a couple of weeks ago. $31.95 from TSS in Alicetown. Well worth the money - no more foggy visor, brilliant, especailly at Manfeild when you tend to breathe a bit heavier.

Available in clear or tinted.

BTW - no point hibernating on beaut days like today - Taka's were dry at 1.00pm on all but one corner, despite pretty severe frost and icing this morning.

It was pretty windy and probably under 10 degrees, but what a magnificent day for riding! Thank god for a radar detector though as two mufti cars were working the big hill just south of Tokoroa and making quite a bit of money for the State by the look of it!

Lovely fine day yes, but after a quiet bimble up old north rd - Wainui - Silverdale - Home, my fingers were white and without any feeling except pain!
Must be time for the thermo liners!

ProGrip inserts are great - unfortunately the lowering sun revealed my visor is shagged, so, it looks like new insert and visor,,,unless I can reuse the old insert......

Try a hair shampoo with lanolene. I use to drive school busses and some have very poor demisters. Even though when you wipe it off there will still be a thin film that prevents the adhesion of moisture.

Yeah - it's a beautiful sight that sign eh! Who needs top speed when you can play on corners like that!
I'm going to pop up and visit it this afternoon. :D

You could try a product like *RainEx* or some simular name. The real way of helping, but not totaly preventing, fgging is having your visor squeeky clean as the moisture condensates on any dirt. I suspect that is why the other helpful hints of dish washing liquid/shampoo work. its the cleaning that helps the mostest

Also, water will tend to bead rather than fog up on a thin film of detergent or such like, as the surface is water "repelling" ie water does not bond well to it, unlike the neutral or attractant surface of plastic.

There is a similar sign at the beginning of the Paraparas - only its 52 km. That can be rather entertaining
