Enjoy (yes I know it's nana speed but I'm only a beginner!) it's nice'n twisty.

Points for spotting:
a) Truck on wrong side of the road
b) cop car

Hello hello, I'm in a place called Vertigo.
Anyone else have to fight the urge to constantly turn your head while watching that?
That's cool man, looks to be an interesting little piece of back road fun.

Great lil vid... some very dark patches but great anyway!

Saw the cop car... but because of the light I couldn't really judge if that truck was on the wrong side or not :)

It was on the wrong farking side of the road as I came round the corner! Luckily it was going slow otherwise I'd have filled me undies (perish the thought)

And now - Twilight Road....

Yup - 'Real' motorcyclists usually have more than 32bhp at their disposal and have been riding for more than 6 months total.. but I take your point and will endeavour to go faster for you!

Don't take any notice of Mstrs, McJim - he's a stirrer from way back... he's not the fastest himself, in fact if him and hXc were riding identical bikes, I know which one I'd put my money on...

Just pulling your leg, laddie. You are doing well. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. One day I will get around to trying a camera on my tank. Couldn't do it on the old bike cos the screen had gone a bit 'frosted', and couldn't see thru it clear enough.

It's a really cheap one I got about 5 years ago - no brand - no contrast adjustment....very basic.

It makes me realise how much of a commuter I am, and how I know nothing. Oh well, I have decades ahead of me (hopefully) to lean and improve.
Thanks for posting.

Great work McJim! I've been wanting to tape a ride for a while now, your efforts have encouraged me to give it a go. Goin' the Big Boys Toys this weekend so might see if there's one of those little cameras you can plug into the video camera. Seen them around at times. Otherwise I guess I'll tape the video camera on the tank or something.

Alas when the vehicle licencing people see fit to award me permission I shall buy a bike not so lawnmower like in sound.

I am not even allowed to prove I can ride a bike for another 6 months.

I had to resort to a roll of gaffa tape I purchased in Clevedon. I've learned a couple of valuable lessons though:

1) make sure the camera is straight (it was pointing a bit right)
2) point the camera slightly down so there's less sky (as this was buggering up the auto contrast)

Will try again next time the opportunity presents. If you're lucky I'll ride behind you and you can be famus! (I am aware the spelling is famous but I mis-spell words to maintain gijoe1313's sense of superiority as he is, after all, an english teacher)

There are an awful lot of riders on this site that can do those roads MUCH faster than I can. I therefore use the ol' pre-emptive humility to avoid the kind of negative comments that would make me hang up my helmet and leathers for good!

I posted those vids not to show my ability but rather to show off some of the great bike roads out East of Auckland - many people don't know they are there - I've given out their names so you should be able to find them easily on a map.

The road looks pretty sketchy, tight and rough in that first video - I wouldn't call that 'nana speed' for the conditions. You were going off~ :niceone:
er... keep it rubber-side down, eh?

That looked awesome McJim.... I dont know what I would have done seeing that truck on the wrong side, looked like it maybe crossed the centre line when it was cornering? Ummm cornering looks scary. :shit:

McJim
10th November 2006, 13:19
To be fair the hairpin was pretty tight and the truck has a long wheel base he needed the extra width to get round the corner. Luckily there was plenty of braking distance for me to take should I have needed it.

Once you get into the rhythm of leaning the bike through corners you forget that you are leaning - it will seem the most natural thing in the world to you.

And I don't lean as much as the REAL motorcyclists yet!

Ok cool, note taken about cornering for my lesson tomorrow. Do you find that you corner better on one side, left or right?

Crikey - there's a whole thread on that somewhere here.

Personally I corner left easier but that's coz I was a racing cyclist back in the days of toe clips (before clipless pedal systems) and had the habit of locking my right foot in. As a result I always felt prepared to put the left foot down in a corner (motard style) but didn't have the same 'bail out' option to the right so was slightly mor cautious going that way.

If you're talking BHS then it's more important you steer with your eyes - the lean will come naturally - listen to your instructor - they will tell you everything you need to know...trust them...not me...I am a beginner.

Lissa
10th November 2006, 14:59
yea he said just to trust the bike, and it will get me around the corners... although the fastest I have gone so far is 20km/hr... Yea. (found cornering left quite differcult) Hopefully I can go a bit faster tomorrow! Cheers for the vid!

Gnarly bits o' road, there Jim, real V-Twin territory 4sure. You were doing a pretty good job, too. I've always said cyclists usually adapt pretty quick once they discover real bikes have motors  Nice lines and nice vids too.

Is your camera one of those Swann plug-in spy cams?? If so, a graduated grey filter might be what you need to sort the camera contrast issues. Cokin probably still make one, which should be available at specialist camera shops, or Trade me. Try a graduated 0X-4X (25%) light transmission to knock the highlights out of the sky.

Shots out of the back of the bike often have some extra pucker value, too. Saw some vids recently shot out the back of a ZX10R, hilarious stuff! This is also where I saw the Grad filter used to good effect.

You've got me all worked up; i went out earlier to the garage to see if my camera fits on my radar mount; and it does. So i'll be donning the 'back pack' on the next ride and as soon as we get out of dodge, of with the detector and on goes the camera..cheers Jim!

Those roads look familiar! I must venture out that way one day and give it a go myself, however if you think you're slow then I must be taking corners at a snails pace! hehe

Great work, I always love seeing other people riding through NZ scenery.

Hopefully you will be bringing it along on future rides?

For those who have asked - I used a piece of metal with a hole at either end, a light bracket from a bicycle and some cloth tape to hold it steady.

All bits and pieces I had in my tool box.

And I don't lean as much as the REAL motorcyclists yet!

We are all real motorcyclists, some are just trying to wear out that reallity quicker than others. (and their footpegs):)

Nice vids, looking at the roads you are doing fine, keeping the cornering smooth without having to make big corrections part way round means you aren't going in to hot or beyond your own abilities, keep up the practise and you will get better everytime.

Will have to look out those roads if I am up that way:Punk:

On the Kaiaua road vid - notice the cruiser rider giving me a wave at the end.

I'll say again that these vids are really to showcase the fantastic roads you fellas have in New Zealand NOT to display any ability on my part - I'm new to bikes and am riding a 250cc twin in these clips so don't expect anything outstanding.
