Life's way of telling me I'm not supposed to be riding...

March - got my learners & first bike, hyosung GT250R

May - wrote my bike off, after only having it for such a short time... (Warning to GT250R riders: don't damage the front suspension.. it'll cost you half of a new bike just to replace)

September - Grabbed a new hyosung from the shop the second the cheque got cleared from the insurance (a shipment of hyosungs had finally arrived around this date)

One week later (roughly) - about 850km on the odometre, I hear "tackering" noise from the engine.. Luckily I had booked my 1k service in advance, so I rang the mechanic and he told me its best not to ride it till the service.

A few days later - bike is put in for the service, the mechanic only had enough time to do the 1000k service things, not fix the noise from the engine. they tell me I have to wait another week for the next opening in the workshop.

1 week later - bike is fixed and I show up and pay for the 1000k service (the other problems are under warranty) apparently the roller-bearing was worn.

About 5 minutes later - out of the dealership suddenly I lose all power, the RPM's drop dead and it backfires in a big way! :( - They give me a GN courtesy bike.. I'd be pretty screwed without transport so I can't complain... too much :)

The next day - I call the shop to find out what the hell happened, apparently the NEW roller-bearing collapsed and they are ordering in new replacement parts for the engine... the mechanic said that he has no idea what happened. Basically it will all be replaced and I have to keep my fingers crossed it won't do it again.

1 week later - I get a call saying all the parts will come nationally except the camshaft, which will be from Korea... ETA 3 - 4 weeks

It's now November, I've been calling them quite a bit since the 4 weeks has been up to see if anything's changed, and I'm still without a bike (Well... the GN..). Apparently the camshaft wasn't shipped like I thought considering the timeframe, one of the guys there told me there was some sort of month-long public holiday in Korea (during september - what the hell? month long!?), on top of that it takes about 3-4 weeks just to export things anyway by aircraft... So here I am, still waiting. From what he told me, it should be here any day now...

What would you have done in my position?
If the engine fails again should I be able to get my money back or a replacement GT250R? (I really can't be fucked waiting for another shipment though...)
Considering I only rode the bike for about a week, I'm guessing I'll be able to extend the warranty from the day it's FINALLY back on the road?
First GT250R lemon apparently! yay go me :D

If I do get my money back I'm thinking I'll go for a cheaper 250 till I get my full.. I've got my eyes on one of those 2006 black R6's (http://www.motorcycledaily.com/090105bottom_r6.jpg) :)

Go into the shop and throw a loud tantrum out the front, close to the expensive new-model bikes and high-value walk-in customers, until they give you a proper loaner bike. Like another GT250R, or better.

They will, eventually.

Same problem twice within weeks......... with a brand new bike.

Money back and buy another new bike.

Sorry but it sounds like this bike is the dud of the year... and you can get the odd dud bike... it does happen.

Life's way of telling me I'm not supposed to be riding...

Hmmm, maybe life's way of telling you NOT to buy a hyosung? :pinch:

I'd get a refund, buy a cheap-as 250 (stick the rest of the money in the bank) ride it until you've got your full, buy a bigger bike! :done:

Not what you'd expect from a brand new bike. Kick up a fuss mate they shop owes you big time, you don't owe them.

8th November 2006, 15:26
Yes it is!

I tried out the gt250 (same engine as 250r, just missing a front disc, fairing and afew minor bits), then this bandit I bought and made my mind up in 4 minutes.

Better resale as well... Just try out and see... Ohh and with your history, make sure the insurance is paid up first eh? ;)

The law entitles you to a refund.

Do not accept any other offers of any compensation unless it is totally fucking awesome. Don't accept 'reasonable' compensation.

So: Only accept all your money back or another bike.

Stay firm, the law is on your side. Don't 'um' and 'ahh' with them, don't negotiate. Just keep saying 'All my money back please'.

Also, the resale on those things is horrible, investigate something else that is already used and save the extra money for a rainy day. Or spending on your next bike when you want to upgrade past a 250.

I'm not sure, but I think the warranty clock stops when the bike isn't in your hands.

Big step onto the R6 (unless there's some motorcycling past life you haven't told us about...). Sound advice on here re sticking to your guns with the dealership and also re getting a refund. I'd have to reeeeaaalllllyyy (emphasis on the really there) love the Hyosung to be able to cope with these dramas I reckon. Best of luck with that.

ohh thats so lame when new stuff gives you problems like that. howd you crash the first one out of interest? mate get another bike cause shes tainted now. use it as a deposit for your R6!!!

8th November 2006, 16:53
Teach you to buy a Hyosung me thinks.

But as mentioned an R6 is a big step-up i'd be on a 250 for a lot longer before stepping up to a much more powerful bike. Otherwise ya might unintentionally damage it.

I would be interested in what bike shop this is...

A 1 month holiday In korea seems like a load of crock to me. Seriously.

Get your $$$ back and get a Honda VTR250. Just as fast as they hyosung, and it looks awesome too!!

Good luck mate!

just think glen, it seems pretty simple to me - or is there more than one in wellington?

if it is that shop (i refuse to tarnish their good reputation) then its a shame that the hyosung name is letting them down. although ive heard theyre quite good with warrenty stuff so far for them.

Sketchy_Racer
8th November 2006, 20:15
Yes, I know dude.....

But not everyone uses the shop that is closest to them.

So i don't want to think a bad name for a shop that doesn't deserve it :)

Hows you Bandit coming along Doug??

Crapola! Sounds like you are having no luck with that ride - must be a Friday built bike before the month long holiday in Korea! You're meant to ride mate, just not that heart-breaking piece of shite, I'd go spare if I was without my own ride for that long - dunno how you handle it! :sick:Though having a blat on the mighty Ginny does has its own mystique :msn-wink:

So yeah, get a refund ... in full and go shopping for another two-fiddy! :scooter:

not for a learner. worse thing you want when being a newbie is having an unreliable bike.

Sorry to hear about your warranty woes. I'm thinking (and you should be) what has caused that bearing to collapse? Defective material? Blocked oil line? Whatever it is, it shouldn't have, and you can definitely expect better performance and reliability than this from a near new bike. I'd be worried about it shitting itself once the warranty expires, or explaining to the next owner the reason so much work has been done on it (if you're asked, if you're honest!). I suggest you maybe write to the shop, or take a mate with you to back you up, as prev advised insist on replacement or money back, or down trade on something they have 2nd hand. That last one may be easiest for them. Then spend the extra $$ later on a bigger bike. Good Luck Dude.

Thanks for all the support and advice!
I actually got a call this morning saying it will be ready monday lunchtime-ish.

I have been thinking a bit about what I ACTUALLY want to happen, at first I thought all of my money back, save the rest for my full licence etc... but looking around for second hand deals, the type of bikes im looking at are around the 4-5k mark anyway, so why not stick with hyosung? after all, being a student I might have no choice but to hold on to it for a long time until I can afford to run a larger bike.

If I take the bike back, as its been said I will be worried about it crapping out after the warranty expires, not to mention the re-sale of it.

So I could come to some reasonable agreement and keep my current one...
but my best option would be to get a brand new GT250R, which no doubt will involve me waiting a few MORE months for a shipment to arrive.

rushed post to be continued.. ran out of time at work!

Well, they weren't far off...

There was a big holiday in Korea recently.
Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) operates on the Lunar calendar, so it's at a different time every year.
This year it happened to fall in October, from the 3rd until the 9th. As the 3rd was a Tuesday, many families and companies decided to take the Monday off as well, meaning the country was at a standstill from about Friday 29th September until Monday 9th October.
Still not a month-long holiday by any means, but then you have to consider the backlog of parts ordered over that time (as Hyobags shit themselves daily it seems) and yeah, probably takes about a month to get that part you ordered.

Looks like this time your boys weren't completely full of it...

Really? I thought they were reasonably good?

I've finally got it back! Picked her up monday but only for a short ride though, fantastic wellington weather.. It’s supposed to be heading into summer! :(
Put a huge grin on my face immediately after starting the engine, it was if the GN never happened. I'm now patiently watching it from work, hope the weather clears itself for tomorrow.

As for the warranty I need to pop hyosung an email, the salesman said he'd be surprised if they don't accept, as it does not cost them anything. The mechanic(s) said they had taken it for a ride, and to also to bring it in once again after 500-1000km for a checkup.

The CDI has also been replaced, unfortunately it came with an aussie CDI system which retards the throttle for noise and gas emissions, it was most noticable in third gear with a huge flatspot - until now :scooter:

As for the R6, I'll admit it's a big step up but I'm sure I'll manage it, it's not like my wrist will spontaneously spasm out of control :). When I have money I'm thinking of doing advanced riding courses and\or something newbie friendly like streetstock - I need to actually check it out first, but that kind of thing does interest me.

All in all, it's pretty shit it happened, I'm not quite out of the woods yet but I've got it back nonetheless.

Ride as much as possible to see if you are going to get any further problems, if you get any further failures, insist on either a full refund or new replacement, you have had more than enough issues to start, hope you enjoy riding:scooter:

Now that I've finished uni for the year, and can't get more hours at my part-time job I've got more than enough free time to burn petrol until I get my shit together :D

Any suggestions for day rides near wellington? I'd prefer to stay away from the wairapa though, it's been WAY too windy lately... I usually go around to eastbourne, or the bays around the airport is usually a nice ride.
