Definitely won't be there. Waitemata MCC has a family day on in Woodhill so will be there helping out & suffering after the ISDE (no, not riding, just helping out). Have a good event Scott & hope to make it to some of the rides this year (esp. Waikaretu).

It's an institution for me, I've gone every year (except one) since I started trail riding & it was my first official "trail ride". Scotty and the team from Mr Motorcycles organise a good ride & Glenn Murray is a great one, especially if you're new to the scene. Looking forward the new loop fomat as well. Hoping it will be the first ride a new bike for me this year cause I reckon it's a good one for running it in.
Scotty, are you just running one loop all day? Sounds like the one that was traditionally the after lunch run?

yeah we are running one loop all day and this year it will be the afternoon one from the last few years, the plan is to change them year on year so next year we we run the traditional morning loop, it took a bit of work to get the farmers to agree but we believe it will be better for everyone.

Cheese, it great for beginners, even if it's wet (as long as you have good rear tyre). It was the first ride I did when I first started playing in the dirt! I had only been playing around on the local subdivision before that ( what is now botany town centre ). I rocked up with a 1986Yamaha XT250 with about 5 cm of rear suspension travel and had a blast! Went with 3 other first timers that day and they all got the bug too. Got a few cheeky comments about my new helmet and boots being worth more than my bike though!
I also think the loop planned for this year is the easier of the two that have run in the past.

I'm sweet as it's my wife I was worried about. She had a put around at woodhill today up and down the road. It was fuckign funny she gave it a heap of gas and put the mighty XR100 into gear without pulling the clutch in. She popped a bit of a wheelstand and just about smacked into someons ute.
I think that she needs a bit more practive as bumps and hills still freak her out.

I saw you guys there today, good on her for having a go, probably need a nice flat open paddock to practise on first.

she was freaking out and said she felt stupid, but I said at least you're out here giving it a go while the other guys GFs are at home! She felt better after I said that. She was hung over too so that didn't help.....

she was probably abit embarssed with all the other people around, but most of us bike riders think its cool when someone is giving it a go.
You could take her to thunder x, theres a big paddock up the top she could practise in and no one else normally ever goes up there.

yeah we will go there next time I think. She was worried about people looking at her and not paying attention to what she was doing. She has been buzzing about it now and I think she is quite keen to get back on the bike. so that's all good.

933! Fark . . . I thought it was a good turn out when they mentioned 600 at the briefing. To be honest, when we turned up and saw all the cars in the paddocks we were tempted to keep going on to Thundercross. Glad we didnt however, had a blast. Would have liked to see a few more challenging sections, maybe the odd hillclimb and some stream crossings etc, but all in all it was a good fun (fast) trail.
Will be back again next time you run it. BTW - what was the charity it was fundraising for?

Charity is for the local community. Brillant
I had a great day, but im quite sore now. This has been my first all day ride for about 1.5 months. I almost forgot what arm pump was like. The bog in the middle was awesome, i had to get a hand pulling my bike out of an especially deep part of creek (thanks for the local farmer giving a hand in that). I saw a guy who looked fresh from the 6 day riding a 6 day spec 300EXC and man he was flying and doing some insane stuff. I managed to get 3 loops in and averaged 40km for each loop according to my little KTM trip computer and a max of 114kph :D. Last loop went to fast into a mix of dried up ruts and hit the deck pretty hard, had a headache and sore elbow so just reverted to sitting down mode for the rest of the loop, next trail ride i'll be getting some elbow gaurds and maybe a new helmet.
Thats a massive turn out!! It was pretty tight at the start but half way through the first loop and ownwards it was spaced out nicely.
Always a ride to have on my calender

How did the guys on Trials bikes do? Saw at least two of them, was wondering whether they would hold enough gas to get them all the way around.

Ah - I saw some trials bikes on trailers with dirt bikes too as I was going to the Huntly tip with a trailer.I hadn't heard about a Hamilton club trial around Huntly so wondered if they were doing the trail ride.Saw a YZf/WR on a ute outside a church too....a well prepard rider.
So do trials bikes often do these trail rides? The TLR200 is pretty old school and should be good on a tight or slushy trail ride....would it be ok to do these on that bike? It's always ready to go,the DT230 is set up for road use,it only takes a morning to swap it over, but don't have the time.I am far more confidant on the TLR200 than just about any bike I've ever had.

Just managed to load the photos from the ride. Woody is moving house and flying to Wellington to pick up his latest toy, so hasn't written anything up yet.
But we got some good photos, that boggy section was a real laugh. I was very impressed how all the 930 or so bikes spread out, no real bottle necks.
Thanks Scott, well organised!
Cheers

being addicted to two wheels or hating the four (pile ups at the tricky parts) dam near fell off form the laughing did any one else catch site of the dude on the 4 wheeler when the right rear drifted of and landed in the river poor guy they had to have a swim to get it back of all the bad luck if it wasnt enough the wheel came off ( a little tlc and maintainance would have prevented)

This particular ride was quite open and flowing, with only the odd slushy bit (only one of a decent size, and it wasnt tricky so long as you picked a decent line). The only concern I would have on a trials bike would be the distance, I was going through 5+ litres per loop, a trials bike probably wouldnt be so thirsty, but my understanding is that they tend to have very small tanks, around 2l?
But as barty5 mentioned, the only way to find out would be to give it a go sometime. If you do, sing out, I'd be keen to meet the mighty Motu and put a face to the name.

The TLR would be more suitable than a modern trials bike, but not really suited to a fast trail ride....114kph is 100kph too fast for me.Stuff I wouldn't want to do on a trail bike would be a ball on the TLR200.I'll look at doing the next charity ride in the Waikato on it.....or after some heavy rain I'll go to Kimmy's if they don't close the track.
