View Full Version : Wellington: Xmas Toy Run

Paul in NZ
10th November 2006, 09:49
Forgive me if this has been posted before but...

It looks like the Wellington HOG group is organising a Xmas toy run on the 2nd december. (I saw a sign on a wheelie bin in the back of a ute and scribbled down the details)

I checked with them and it's open to ALL bikes.

Check in is the Sandbar at Mana at 9am.

It's $10 per head and there will be a BBQ breakfast with all procedes going to the Salvation Army.

They will go down SHW1 and onto SHW2 to Petone and then I think he said back into town to Aotea Sq where they will have bands etc.

Bring a TOY to donate (obviously)...

Sounds like quite a blast and a flier is coming out so CHEACK THE DETAILS above 'cos I scribbled it down OK - once I have more info I will post here...

Cheers

Yep it is on Dec 2 we are meeting at Sandbar in Paremata and leaving there at 10.30am and then heading into town for a bike show etc at Queens Wharf. Its open to all bikers not just the HOG members so here is a chance for all Wellington riders and those nearby to help out a great cause by bringing a toy to donate....see you all there :Punk:

Sounds cool, we'll try to come along.
My mum always said that you should try to take people up on invitations, even if you don't really want to go, otherwise they eventually stop asking! (Unless you want them to piss off and leave you alone).

Don't feel bad - I don't know you either.... :innocent:

Look for an ancient orange (I swear it was red on the colour chart) and white Triumph with a fat gimp in a black / blue jacket and say hi... Thats a pretty distinctive bike you have there... Should be easy.

I'm guessing it will take a fair while to register etc on the day and there will be a LOT of bikes there so if you are coming, pm me closer to the time and I'll give you my mob # so you at least know one person... (I am human - promise).

Not sure if the the loverly Vicki is coming - at this stage it's a 'probably'

You could swing by our place in Raumati South in the morning and ride down with me if you like?

Sandbar is in Mana, headed south it's on the right (seaward side) just after the Shell / Mc Donalds outfit. There is a little layby place there to turn off and park in.

Registration is at Sandbar from 9am $10 to register gets you a toy run patch and entry to the bike show after the run. Sausage sizzle and then we leave about 11am heading into town for the pressie giving and bike show, bands etc at Queens Wharf...should be a great day and a good chance to show the rest of Wellington that bike people are the good people we all know...looks like Dom Post paper wil be covering it as well.

This is not a Harley only ride, everyone is welcome and we would love to see as many different makes, models etc a spossible..the more the merrier.

If anyone is feeling left out, look for the Harlety Softail with the plate LAHOG come say Hi.....see you all there

No way - I did that once for my club and it was a friggin disaster.

Tips for future santas

1. Always try the suit on before you agree - one size does NOT fit all.
2. If arriving in strange transport - make SURE you can get in and out in a santa suit in a dignified fashion.
3. Make SURE the transport will run of it's own accord.
4. Don't drink - a drunk santa is NOT funny
5. When asking if the kids have been good all year, DO NOT ask them ARE YOU SURE? if they say yes. Mothers do NOT find drunk santas making their kids cry funny (at all)
6. if you are going to throw out candy as a lolly scramble (from your scrambler) practise riding one handed FIRST.
7. Make sure the lollies are wrapped UP - don't trust the fucking elves to do that - they have an odd sense of humour.
8. Don't use really hard sweets unless you are really good at point 6 and are NOT drunk (point 4)
9. Practise the get away.
10. make sure the helper is not drunk either...
11. Don't glue a santa hat to your helmet and travel on the open road - santas need oxygen

Hope this helps

No - but it's a good idea to put it in a plastic bag. Some folks go mad on huge stuffed animals on the back of their bikes etc but remember these gifts are for a range of kids and who the hell wants a stuffed, soggy, dirty micky mouse with a chewed off leg where the chain got loose when you are 14?

A gift voucher is acceptable - smaller packs of Lego are great (IMHO) and anything else you can carry.

There will be chaos at the Sandbar - there is not that much parking and by the time the Harleys are pointed in the right direction not much room for us to park up. More the merrier so let's all turn up and really stuff up the traffic flow into the city. Sounds dangerous to me having all that iron around and no escape path.

The Sandbar is EASY to find.

After the porirua roundabout (heading north) you cross the bridge into Mana.

After the New World on the left (sea wards side) and before the Shell / McDonalds is a row of shops in a little layby ie there is an island between the main rd and the parking area. There are Real Eastate - Chemists - Hell Pizza - Bottle Store etc and at the northern most end is the sandbar..

You can get to it by going to the BP or one of the other accessways to the little access road by the railway line and head north where you get to the rear of it as well but I expect that to be crowded.

Yegads, what happened? both bikes die?

Nope - The Moto Guzzi is on the blocks for some long overdue preventitive mtce. I'm being a bit anal but a ZD gearbox is a rare and valuable thing and one of the worlds leading athorities on them is offering to strip and check, re shim in exchange for beer. Nothing dramatic but i can't get her legal in time having started the project - drat. This is a long term love affair and I'm not going to damage the beast because of a rush of blood to the head.

The Triumph - which was the designated hitter during this period of Guzziless is being truculent. No major drama but neither me or the infinately cleverer Joe can pinpoint why. Again - the potential risk of a rod through the cases vastly outweighs the pleasure of the toy run.

Its a bugger - but my choice is to run fiddly old grump boxes - and somedays are spanners and otherdays are grins. Besides - it looks nice weather and I do have the other tank to paint as well as el mucho gardeno and if it's REAL nice - the kayaks have not had a wet bottom this season so... have FUN.. I will be...

It broke off at the toe bit with the rubber on it, I thought I'd try drilling a hole through the lever then replacing the broken bit with a bolt, put the rubber sleeve over it and locktite it into the hole, then grind down the head of the bolt so it doesn't destroy my boot. Sound a little pie in the sky?

Yup! Thats the plan. Use a bolt with a longer threaded portion and put a nut each side of the lever and tighten it up against each other. make sure you have clearance inside so it does not foul on the frame etc.

Use a bit of rubber hose or some rubber tape to soften the thing up.

Good luck (and chuck a spare bolt / nut in ya pocket just in case)

Look for a big dark blue Triumph Tiger with a topbox that has a KB sticker on the seat side. I will be wearing a light grey jacket, I will see if I can find a KB sticker to put on it. Come and join us -Sphinx, Jude, elle, anybody!

I will be there earlyish too. What time you planning to get there Sels? Im planning around 9.15-9.30am. I will be taking a pillion for the 1st time on this bike. My 10 yr old daughter promised her I would taker her on the next Toy run I went on.

Just got home from the Toy Run..... Feakshow great pics.......nice to meet you Sels....almost 200 bikes at last count, over 7 wheelybins full of toys and almost $1400 for the Salvation Army to distribute this christmas.....Wellington bikers please take a bow...a great turnout ( a real nice mix of all sorts of bikes from us HOG members through Indians, a nice selection of Japanese bikes and a cool trike), great day and well done to everyone for riding responsibly....yes it was slow but it was toy run rather than a road run and I am sure the people in Petone loved seeing all the bikes...

watch TV1 and TV3 tonight on the news for some coverage..

Once again WELL DONE WELLINGTON BIKERS

Yeah! I've also just got back. Thanks for the great shots Freakshow. There's even one of me. Unfortunately it's from the wrong angle. (mental note to myself - I must stop eating those pies :( ).

A great turnout and good to see Wellington put on the weather for a change.

This is me - the one with the big butt and the red and black helmet.
I never realised how small the bike looks from behind when I'm sitting on it!

In the first one - note my little CBX dragging the level down. I was hoping that it would maybe grow up by being surrounded by the big boy's but alas, no!

Such a great day - weather was fabulous, met some new people and had soooo much fun (especially waving to the kiddies and the cameras!). Superb turnout, well done Wellington!

The Police and the marshalls did a great job (apart from Petone where it all went wobbly for a moment). Thanks to all those involved and thanks to the organisers :D

I have pics of Elle33f, skunk (with bear!) and a rather dubious hippopotamus pillion......(oh, as well as some awesome bikes at the show)...but I can't seem to upload them :(

I'll keep working on figuring it out (technologically challenged, obviously!).

I'm got famous (Thanks FS)! And Hawkeye thinks he's got pie problems!! I had a ball. Great fine day to ride, really good company (let no-one tell you that Hog riders aren't good people) and such a good cause. I met a couple of new people and met up with a couple I hadn't seen for awhile - Madmal, Hawkeye, Skunk, Sels, Freakshow (sans bike) The first time I've ridden on the road and not been able to hear my own bikes engine. Bikers are good people.

How come your thumbnails are vertical and everyone else's are horizontal?

I had to give it a miss today, promised a chick from work that I'd help her move house and she followed it up with an afternoon of food and Sauv Blanc so I wasn't complaining.

No, I didn't and I'm really sorry I missed the opportunity to meet you finally! Sels told me you were there and I was going to come over and say hello but my little mind got distracted by orange juice at the bar and sausages and after that I had totally forgotten the reason I had walked up to the front in the first place.....*sigh* I'm a bear of little brain.....

I was rather proud that the wee ginny kept up (mostly) and that I didn't end up doing a spectacularly late entrance! Half expected to win the prize for lowest cc rating bike!!

Today was seriously THE most fun I have had all year! I need to go on some more group rides :D

Jude thank you for today - i loved it and hanging with ya - you made my day.

Sels lovely meeting you and to the odd couple on the army trail bikes blowing out smoke in front of us........

And there was some other lovely person i met as well - sorry i forgot your name *eep*

On the way home over the takas i got to the top and it was like a huge meeting taking place *L* was great fun however, about a minute after i got there we were told there had been a car vs bike accident on the wgtn side about half way up.......certainly makes you stop and think and i really hope whoever was involved in that was ok.

Pickle was that you and the Mrs and is that why you were asking about 650 size trail bikes coz the KLR's are kaput? Though not sure that you fit the "odd" description.

Not sure about the description of being odd, as for the smoke that would be Viv's KLR, smoke s worse than a used import. Took the KLR's to try & make more noise than the Harleys - No Chance, but right bike for a slow group ride.
Bloody good turnout lots of bikes, lots of friendly people

Merv we are after bigger bikes cause the KLR's are hard work over longer distances, Viv's bike uses a bit of oil, mine has had the top end done.

That photo of the old green army Indian..... the owner was an old school mate of mine...was a mates for years but we had lost touch after I left wgtn. I remember that bike being at the back of the garage when I went round to his place as a teenager. Great to see both bike and owner still in good nick!

Ah, you're a honey, and very welcome! I enjoyed it too - much better having someone to tag along with than being billy no mates :D

Think it's Skunk you're referring to..? The chappie in green with the big bear, LOL!

I'll see how my plans for tomorrow work out - got a whole heap of Avon stuff to do (yes, yes, I know, THE most unlikely Avon lady in the world ). Should have done it all today but ended up snoozing when I got home!

Were we supposed to start our engines? I was just sitting there admiring the bikes around me and the next thing I knew, I was getting sucked along.

That's the first time the little CBX hasn't struggled to get to 100k with my ample frame on it. It felt like I had a tow rope on.:woohoo:

I think my little CBX would have challenged you for that prize JCM. I almost put in the arena for the show but decided I didn't want to take away any of the glory from that black Chopper:rofl: Not to mention the red Indian. What an awesome machine.

Yeah, I didn't want to have people gasping for breath at my awesome bike either (or is that trying to find their breath cos they're laughing so hard??). Were you parked just by the bollards infront of the main area? A wee red and white bike? If so, I saw you setting off as elle and I were walking past to get to our bikes.

Shame I didn't get to meet more KBers yesterday but I'm not as brave as sels, going around asking if people are who he thinks they are (I got a 'are you jude? Judecatmad?' and I stood there rather worried for a couple of seconds thinking 'why yes, yes I am. Who are you and what have I done wrong now?!')

There were some really superb bikes but I couldn't be bothered taking such good care of all that chrome, LOL. Took me hours to clean and polish up the ginny (the bits I could be bothered doing that is!). Got an awesome buise on my forehead where I forgot about the handlebars as I stood up from polishing the exhaust......OUCH!!!!

What a great day tho :D

yeah, and i too didnt want to take away from those bikes in the competition by putting mine up there with the custom plastic $2 shield covering the battery. I did get a few glances though and i would suggest that those people were thinking of a way to be able to steal my shield cover without me knowing:Punk:
