Ive just sold my bike.... the guys coming to pick it up on Sunday... BUT I was just out riding down the motorway to TSS when my speedo stopped working. Its happened quite a bit before and its usually just because the speedo cable has fallen out but yesterday it was loctited (sp?) in place. When I got to TSS the guys had a quick look at it but because of the loctite they could undo the screw... They pulled the cable out and had a look but they it did look OK, then they jacked the bike up and had a look at the speedo drive. They reckon its stuffed.... Im not so sure as they couldnt get the screw undone to check where it is screwed in without taking of the fairing, however I was just there to buy boots so it wasnt booked in ad they didnt have time... Is anyone able to help me out in the next day or two by taking the fairing off and getting the loctite loosened around the screw so I can see if that will work? I would REALLY appreciate it as I am supposed to be sitting my Full Licence on Sunday and need the bike to be working!!!

try using a heat gun or hairdryer to soften the locktite.

It turns out the speedo drive on the front wheel had managed to strip itself so it's up for replacement. I've never seen that happen before!

They only have a plastic gear in the drive unit (if i remember right), so they can strip pretty easliy. Happens lots on older dirt bikes.

Yeah the drive was plastic and the bit that turns the cable was metal... The plastic part was totally stripped when I pulled it apart.

I don't know how it happened though because the speedo cable still turned fine without any resistance so there shouldn't have been anything stopping the metal part from turning to let it strip the plastic. Guess it's just one of those weird things though.

Bit rude that they're $180 to replace and you can only get em from japan tho!

Rip off aren't they!

I have one that could go in the sold ZSR150 now if your in a hurry, then you can replace it for me later.
I am going to look at ordering some of these plastic speedo drives from my source in Thailand. Will be cheaper and quicker than ordering in NZ.

Same thing happened to me 3 months ago on the CBX.
