yes it has a small filter beneith the front cyl carby, they are a bike that like to be tinkered with all the time, had the motor and box done twice at great cost $$$$$$, second time i put 8 new V2 gears in it as the the o/e ones where lossing there hardining, but if you change the oil reg, and warm them up to get that SAE 50 oil warm your fine.

1982 SD900 I owned it for 6 years (I think) and did around 50,000km on it including the Southern Cross and two Rusty Nuts 1000 milers
In that time it had a crank done (V2 one shit itself with 11,000km on it) a little end bush and gearbox output shaft bearing
I put the SS fairing on as I got tired of having a sore neck trying to keep up with maniacs on the Ducati club rides
The shot loading it onto a boat is on Stewart Island after the Rakuria Sunset Rally in 1994
If I could afford it I'd have another one tomorrow although the one I really lust after is a MHR1000

1) Lewis pass 91 Punakaiki Rally (Mud Run) Mate's 81 SD, had a 8mm allen key hose clamped to the gear lever shaft, electrics hated rain, but a bloody great bike.
2) MHR on song just down the road from home.
3) Mate's 80 LS(not a SL, the ID plate had LS stamped on it) 500 Pantah, crap starter motor, so was bump started everywhere:lol: cost my mate 2 lots of 2yr loss of licence within 5yrs. It had a heap of coin thrown at it while it was off the road but ended up having an appetite for clutches. (maybe not a bevel but it's the era).

196something 250 narrow case.
It's a runner but never been registered on NZ roads. Was originally a 350 but that blew up and the 250 was put in. It's my very slow project.
No idea of the real model, the original UK papers show it was registered as a 1972 Mark 3 which would make it a wide case, but the narrow case frame was only made between 1964? and 1968. It has standard bars rather than clips on's so isn't a Mach 1/Diana, maybe a Monza?

Witty Ducati in luton
I had one of those, mine was a 239 cc French Model , but I did a few things to it ,,twin plug m green and white cam , piston etc ,,,top 100 mph ,,,JUST ,,,only JUST
They were all bought in by the ducati importer ( castle , coombs ?? cant remember ,,but have the adress somewhere ..liverpool way !~)
in the mid 70 s ,, they used a lot of similar componets
John Wittman has been racing these thing for years ,,even made a twin cam engine
Look in any old british bike mag for his address ,,, ( luton England )
BTW The 250 is the nicest of the bunch ,,the rest just vibrated ,,,

The rest weren't to bad if they were carefully assembled and set up. Rode a 450 in "72, which was quite smooth, considering. However, as for the 6 volt electrics.........

That bike is not a 1978 for a start...Wrong tail,no kick start,guard shape to flat..etc etc
Sure, they are good bikes but old now.If you get a lemon, bend over.
If you get a good one, change the oil regularly and generally look after it,it will deliver many good miles and adventures.
They are still a great tourer with a set of Koni's and some decent fork oil.
I would say $4000/$5000 would not go that far on the engine if done in a shop.
Perhaps little change out of $2000 for a conrod kit and a gasket set.

So the bike is a mongrel?
It appears to be in great condition, its just not a 1978.
It has a new number plate so maybe there was some confusion at some stage.
A 1978 is a whaletail..regarded as the best looking by some.
Another typical Trade Me auction with tiny dark pictures and no information.
You would want to see the full work history on the bike or have a very close look to see the general state of it if owner serviced. There manor and answers will quickly determine walking away.

Chassis 902783
Engine Number 902908
The engine number is 1978.
The frame number is 1978.
1978 SD900 in the attached pic,it may have simply had the wheels (magnesium speedlines which could crack and were normally replaced with alloy FPS items which became standard in 1980) and seat unit replaced.Depends if someone was looking for original or just a rider.
The 1978 is small port head ,36/38 mm stepped crank pin.
The later bikes had got about all that was going by then..big port heads like the SS (1979),straight 38mm crankpin (1980)..3 dog gearbox's (late 1981)..All items phased in from around 1979.
It was all over for the Beveldrive by the mid 1980's.

Yes, change the oil regularly.
but the desmo engine is designed to rev.
Lugging them in too high a gear is what kills them fastest.

I said don't rev the crap out of them, not don't rev them.
Who would lug any bike in any gear.
Keep taking a "stock" pistoned SD over 8000 rpm and you will not only !@#$ it long term but it had made its "stock" 52 rwhp long ago.
Not to mention the "stock" combustion chamber is 1950's technology so you are wasting your time.
"Stock" SD engine and 5000 to 7500 rpm sure but the piston speed with a 74.4mm stroke is very high and obviously the stress is squared by the rpm.
The flipside, spend enough on mods, conrods, quality high compression pistons, ceramic coating and welded heads with reangled valves,41mm FCR's,good cams and a clutch that will take the abuse and you can turn over 9000 rpm and close to 90 rwhp.
For how long is the question...All depends on how much time and money is spare.
Never hurts to have a TL as another bike.

Are you able to determine ages for other models? I'm still trying to establish the real age of my 250.
It was last registered in the UK as a '72 Mark 3, which would make it a wide case, but it's a narrow case so must be sometime between about ~'64-'68.
I'd like to get some sort of real age on it, the closer it is to 66, the closer it is to being a classic.

Dazza..It's a 1973 750 GT  ..I also sent my SD engine over to Brook Henry (1993 or 94),turned out he had serviced the bike itself before it was bought back here in early 1983 when i got it...Got everything except the C/R gearbox, went to 41mm FCR's around 1998 ... I used two rear 750 F1 rear inlet manifolds with O-ringed machined wedges to adapt them and also to tip them to the correct angles...Seem to remember at the time it cost me around $1800 by the time i got two carburator's,filters, filter adapters and jets off Sudco, made cables etc etc :gob: but well worth it... It was a surprise the first time a 1550mm wheelbase Darmah carried the front wheel on power alone
One thing of note.....When i got my engine back it came with new Bosch coil's.
What you were not told was, remove the stock beveldrive ballast resistor's,took a while to hunt that down wondering why the jetting was fine but the chambers looked like rich or weak ignition.

Eddie..There are a few restoration books devoted to the Single's which give an idea via the engine/frame numbers.
One other option might be to try a post on a site like this one http://www.bevelheaven.com/ they have a forum for singles so no doubt someone out there will be able to help.

Here's mine, bought it in Sydney in 1986.
Had it painted in '88 and bottom end done in '99.
Was unused from '88 to '04.
Stock ( as far as I know) apart from Staintunes and shocks.
Was probably originally red/white and is a 78 model.
Get strange looks these days kicking over a 900 (easy actually).
Top end could do with a makeover...
I'll wait till it stops.
Good points: very stable, very loud, sets off car alarms, fast enough for me.

In the mid '70s Kevin Bock motorcycles in Upper Hutt had a 450 sitting in the window for ages waiting to be bought. It was there so long the paint was faded on the outward facing side - no-one wanted Ducatis when you could get japanese reliability for a better price.
My mate Grant Smith bought a 750GT, the gold and black one and then as soon as they became available, traded it on a green frame 750SS. That would be a most desirable item today.

That was the bike I lusted after back in the late 70s. When I wrote off my first bike (t-boned a car that didn't give way), I had to travel by bus for a while. Although I never for a moment considered giving up biking, there was a guy in my home town that had one, and used to rip around on it riding like a complete cock. That really gave me the shits - couldn't see him living long.
I had a mate at varsity that bought a Darmah from the proceeds of selling dope during the summer holidays: went from a ratty old CB350 to a Suzuki 750 to the Darmah in a matter of a few weeks.
I nearly bought a 750SS back in '94ish, but I was too long thinking about it, and missed out. But I've threatened the wife that the next "last" bike (the last 4 have been "The last bike you'll ever own, so enjoy it!") will be a Ducati, to go with the keyring I bought in Chch back in 1995.

Ducati have been digging in their parts bins since time began, the SSD was just a Darmah with some extra bits added on
I dressed my Darmah up the same as that but it was in the Burgundy colour, the fairing made it a lot easier to keep up on Ducati Club rides, not that we'd ever speed of course:shifty:

 better freshen up on your Darmah history :bleh:
The SSD was a production model that ran along side the standard SD, only 100 or so made it to Australasia and SSD parts were an optional extra for Darmahs.
The Darmah didn't start getting chopped and changed with parts until 82ish which basically was SS swingarms sealey chain adjusters etc and were still being made in 84 when they were renowned for being as you said a parts bin special some even with MHR 900 motors

I went for a look at this bike on Saturday, first problem was finding the place as with very limited signage it seems you're trying to make the place invisible
The bike is nowhere now as good a condition as mine (although mine has been repainted)and as I said I paid 10K less locally than whats being asked for your one
I wouldn't mind the front forks to try though, be interesting to see if they're much different than the stock Marzocchi with the extra adjustment they have
Just fitted the Ohlins rears on mine, but with pissing down rain outside I think I'll wait for a dry day to test them out
