I got run over by a truck on the takas today :( very lucky to be alive. I'm not sure what went wrong, one second I was to the right of it next I'm under it. was overtaking it with a bunch of cars as it was going up the hill to the cafe.
Escaped with sratches bruises, dodgy knee and what might be a broken arm, new bike is totally wrecked. not sure if I'll be able to hop on one again. :(:(:(
gutted but lucky to be alive I guess :(

Glad to hear that you are still with us.
Take the time to heal and then think about whether or not you want to give up riding.
At the moment you are in pain so give it time.

bugger. glad you werent too badly hurt. bugger about the bike though!!
trucks are funny creatures. ive pulled over to let some by in the past, and have now decided against it after nearly being sucked under the wheels by the wind. im thinking thats what maybe happened to you.

Glad to hear that you got off fairly lightly. It could have been a lot worse.
From the photo, it looks like you were on the inside of a right hand bend. Big rigs like that can close your lane quickly on bends and you have to be prepared for it.
When passing rigs like that, I tend to hold back until the cage in front has cleared the front of the truck and then open up and go for it, keeping to the right of the lane. I never like being next to one of those things, even in a straight line. I prefer to bide my time and then get passed asap

I've wondered too whether I'd ride again after a big off like that. Makes you think. Rest up, look both ways before crossing the street and take care.

Lady behind said she saw my head bounce off a tire, and I pounced out from under it in the knick of time. and according to her statement it looked as though I was just sucked or blown under. The bike is an aluminium frame and is very light and I weigh 60kg so I guess its possible but the thing is I knew I wasn't ready to ride on that road but I still did it so I completely blame myself, I should of known my limits.
I wasn't running wide, it just kinda happened, It looked as though I had just ridden into the truck. my gear is a mess and by the looks of my boot I would of lost a few toes. keep going over it in my head, fuckin scariest time of my life, I thought I was a goner for sure.
Its not that I want to stop riding because I'm scared, its the people I care about, I dont wanna hurt them if something were to happen to me.
The hut police were very supportive and the people that pulled over to help were very helpful too.
Thanks for the support guys, tomorrow I will hobble down to the store and buy a lotto ticket.
be careful out there

Crikey :gob: First, glad to hear you are able to type about it and reflect on the moment, Second - take your time and work out the stuff going on in your head before deciding whether "biking" is for you. It's not too often a biker ends up being able to tell their side of things in a bike vs truck collision :shit:
Let's hope the officialdom-that-be works things out quickly and hopefully in your favour, and you decide to get back on the saddle again.
One lucky biker you are sir!

Sounds like you had an angel lookin after ya. Bloody miracle that is. Stuff the bike, as long as you are ok that's the main thing. Im always paranoid of being sucked under a truck and always be careful when overtaking. They are the buldozers of the road.
Good luck in the recovery. If biking is in your blood you'll ride again. Give it time as that's an awesome healer!!
All the best.

13th November 2006, 21:57
Hell yeah...Very lucky
I know exactly where that is, it is a passing lane so of course you had every right to overtake it there (as they are going slow uphill, and if that is what you were doing), but that corner is bad for wind gusts, I know I have been blown into the fence in that same place a few years back, but I was going downhill :gob:
Cheers and ride safe, and keep riding

I always find it quite scary overtaking trucks (and some cars who speed up) on my 250, you have to be in the right gear and must not under estimate the distance of on coming cars ahead. Easier for those on bigger bikes I guess ;)

That looks terrifying mate.
That corners a tricky one sometimes. I've found myself coming into it a little bit hot at times and you have to really work to get around. And if the winds gusting like it can do on that road its another nasty variable.
In my (relatively short) experience on that road, you need to pick your days. I was guna do Masterton, Matinborough, Summit and back to Masterton on Sunday, but the wind was horrible so only did Mstn and Mtb return.
Glad your here to tell the story, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Now dont get me wrong, i not trying to be a dick.
But you said it is ya first time on that hill, and to me that looks like the corner that tightens up a hell of alot when you are already in the corner. Now because of that and you not knowing of it ya could of run wide with out realising when the wind was there. It also doesnt look like the truck was cutting the corner due to his line and placement on the road.
Either way glad to see that ya made it out alive, dont give up on riding and good luck in the future.

Mrs KD.
I'm skeptical of the "sucked under" hypothesis.
I've frequently been passed by Double B trains while walking along SH 16.Even as close as 1.5 meters away I've never detected any suction. There is a wind blast as the truck's bow wave hits, but that pushes away from the vehicle.
I think some people inadvertently do the wrong thing as they tense up when a large vehicle passes and steer into said vehicle
Ixion
15th November 2006, 09:58
I think it's B Trains (truck and trailer units). I've never noticed any "suck you under the truck " effect with single unit trucks.
But what I do notice is a "bow wave" that pushes you AWAY from the truck (which is logical).
I think what happens is people get hit with the pressure wave from the first bit of the B train (the "truck" bit, prime mover plus first trailer). So they apply a bit of lean to compensate for that. Then the gap in the middle of the train goes past, and theres no presssure wave there. So it's like when you're riding in a high wind and suddenly it stops, you swerve the other way. Just in time to be collected by the second trailer of the B train.

I had a look at the markings the plod put down at the scene. It is further around the corner than it appears on the photo.

It is probably going to be a combination of factors that add up to one hell of fright, doesn't take much for a light bike to be pushed around by the wind and the buffeting of trucks combined with other vehicles on the road
